President Donald Trump is only making it worse for Americans as the deadly diseases increase across the world. Even his campaign recognizes he’s bungling the response, and they’re now recognizing that if Trump doesn’t start serving as a real president, lives will be lost.
Here are the five reasons that things are going to get far worse than they needed to, all thanks to Trump’s foolish decisions.
1. Bringing infected people into the U.S. against the Center for Disease Control’s objections.
This week, the world learned that the Trump administration forced a plane full of healthy people to sit with 14 infected people with the coronavirus, and didn’t even tell them.
It’s unknown why the U.S. didn’t arrange for a private plane to transport the Americans.
They have many available, including through the State Department. They could be decontaminated after the fact. The Trump administration didn’t use any of the alternatives that would have made Americans safer.
2. Trump refuses to listen to science over his buddy, Xi Jinping.
Reporter Helen Branswell wrote for STAT that U.S. health officials have been signaling for weeks that a pandemic was approaching.
Trump’s own advisers were concerned that he’s putting too much faith in Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has diminished the seriousness of the virus.
“Trump has repeatedly told advisers that pushing for a harder line against China could backfire because Xi controls the government ‘totally’ and will not work with the United States if it says anything negative about the country, said one of these senior administration officials, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private talks,” reported the Post.
3. Trump lies about the facts of the coronavirus.
President Donald Trump told the world that by April, the coronavirus would be gone. It’s unknown who told him that or where he got the information, but it’s absolutely false.
“Now, the virus that we’re talking about having to do — you know, a lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in. Typically, that will go away in April. We’re in great shape, though. We have 12 cases — 11 cases, and many of them are in good shape now,” Trump said Feb. 10.
The CDC director, Dr. Robert Redfield, disagreed with the president’s assessment, saying “we don’t know a lot about this virus. This virus is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year, and I think eventually the virus will find a foothold, and we will get community-based transmission.”
4. Trump and the GOP seriously cut public health funding.
One of the greatest allies in a disease outbreak can be public health funding. However, the budget passed in 2018 killed over $1 billion from the Prevention and Public Health Fund (PPHF).
The PPHF acts as the “core of public health programs” in the U.S., according to former director Tom Frieden. When Obamacare was passed in 2010, it financed the PPHF, but Republicans have worked to undermine the law.
5. Trump slashed resources form the Center for Disease Control.
While the reduction in funding to the PPHF has been drastic, it doesn’t mean the CDC has gone without its own budget cuts.
“The Trump administration in 2018 further diverted millions of dollars from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),” said the Scientist.
“CDC’s mission is to keep Americans safe,” said Frieden. “But without funding, the CDC won’t be able to protect us.”
As the president presents his new budget for 2020, the cuts to public health and the CDC are even more drastic. Thankfully, that budget isn’t likely to pass either chamber of congress.
Ultimately, as the coronavirus begins to take over the world, it’s not surprising that Trump’s campaign is worried that the president’s bumbling response could cost him votes in November.
Diseases aren’t like wars; they don’t stay contained in borders; everyone is at risk. Trump’s budget proves that the president doesn’t understand this important fact.

The Trump administration has also spent the last several years dismantling the very government programs responsible for combatting a global health crisis.
In 2018, for instance, the CDC cut 80% of its efforts to prevent global disease outbreaks .

Vice President Mike Pence has taken his first step as head of the president’s Coronavirus Task Force, and in so doing he has made crystal clear what the group’s goal actually is.
Pence has added two of the administration’s top economic and finance advisors, Larry Kudlow and Steve Mnuchin, to the list of members.
The purported goal of the coronavirus task force, presumably, is to coordinate the federal government’s response to the impending pandemic in an effort to minimize transmission and protect Americans from dying.
But by adding the president’s top economic advisor and the Secretary of the Treasury, Pence has made clear the direction from President Donald Trump us exactly what news reports have already stated: Trump put Pence in charge after being “furious” over the stock market being in near free-fall Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Trump trotted Kudlow out to CNBC earlier this week in an attempt to calm the markets, which have dropped about 10 percent from its all-time highs into correction territory. Kudlow lied, claiming the coronavirus in the U.S. was “contained.”

Pence did also add the Surgeon General to the list of members, but again, were the goal of the group to inform and protect the American public, Dr. Jerome Adams would have been the first, not the last person to be named.
The White House claims the Coronavirus Task Force “includes some of the Nation’s foremost experts on infectious diseases,” but it includes not a single person who does not currently work for the trump White House or its agencies, including the CDC and the NIH.

California has discovered a second person with coronavirus who may have received the disease via community transmission, The Washington Post reported Friday.
“A 65-year-old resident of Santa Clara County, Calif., who has no known history of travel to countries hit hard by the outbreak, has tested positive for coronavirus, people familiar with the case said Friday,” the newspaper reported. `“There is no known connection between the new patient and anyone else diagnosed with the disease, known as Covid-19.”

Trump demands pharma come up with a vaccine for coronavirus — but he’s been spreading vaccine conspiracies for years
President Donald Trump met with pharmaceutical companies where he told them he “heard” that a vaccine could be ready in a matter of months. He was swiftly told that it wasn’t how it works.
Vaccines take time to create, but they also require testing on animals. From there, they’re often retooled and tested again on animals. It can go through several versions before scientists feel it is safe enough to test on humans, much less be ready for mass distribution.
“Like I’ve been telling you, a year to a year and a half,” Dr. Anthony Fauci had to interrupt Trump as he was speaking to the press.
It was likely an awkward conversation as the executives of the companies are faced with Trump’s ignorance over science.
It’s a curious conflict for the president because for the past eight years, he’s been sounding the alarm about vaccines being dangerous.
“A study says @Autism is out of control–a 78% increase in 10 years,” Trump tweeted in 2012. “Stop giving monstrous combined vaccinations immediately. Space out small individual shots–small babies can’t handle massive doses. Get smart–and fast–before it is too late.”
“Now they say obese women may cause Autism in children- nonsense, they use any excuse,” Trump tweeted the following month. “The FDA should immediately stop mass dose vaccinations. If you spread single doses out over a short period of years, Autism would be greatly reduced. It’s just my opinion, but I know I’m right. Many people have noticed the problem only after the massive shot.”
Trump said later that year. “The autism and vaccine safety community is encouraged that I’ve been willing to speak up on this issue. I feel strongly about it–and I’m pleased my remarks have had significance concerning this health crisis. Stop massive one time vaccinations–spread them out over a period of time.”
After being called out about his conspiracy theories, Trump was forced to backtrack on vaccines.
“They have to get the shots. The vaccinations are so important,” Trump told reporters after a New York measles outbreak. “This is really going around now. They have to get their shots.”
After all of this, Trump is now demanding a vaccine be rushed by companies.
In a meeting with pharmaceutical executives at the White House, President Donald Trump repeatedly asked if they could rush out a vaccine for coronavirus within the next few months, and had to be told again and again that that wasn’t possible.
“During the meeting, several of the experts and the pharmaceutical industry CEOs had to explain to the president time and again that they cannot necessarily rush a vaccine on to the market.”
“The president was sort of asking as he was going around the room, well, how quickly can we get a vaccine out on the market, and do it in three or four months.”
“At one point, Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is the infectious disease expert for the administration, at one point told the president, no, it is still going to be about a year, and the experts and the pharmaceutical CEOs were explaining to the president that there needs to be a vigorous testing process for the vaccines before you can put a vaccine out on the market.” “Obviously, you can’t put one out on the market for coronavirus if it has not been adequately tested, and they had to explain it for the president time and again.”
“You have a sense … there is an urgency on his part to address the issues this is just not an instant gratification type of problem that we are dealing with, that this administration is dealing with right now.”
