Evangelical magazine — founded by Billy Graham — calls for Trump’s removal from office.
Christianity Today; (snip- The facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.
The reason many are not shocked about this is that this president has dumbed down the idea of morality in his administration. He has hired and fired a number of people who are now convicted criminals. He himself has admitted to immoral actions in business and his relationship with women, about which he remains proud. His Twitter feed alone—with its habitual string of mischaracterizations, lies, and slanders—is a near perfect example of a human being who is morally lost and confused.
Trump’s evangelical supporters have pointed to his Supreme Court nominees, his defense of religious liberty, and his stewardship of the economy, among other things, as achievements that justify their support of the president. We believe the impeachment hearings have made it absolutely clear, in a way the Mueller investigation did not, that President Trump has abused his authority for personal gain and betrayed his constitutional oath.
The impeachment hearings have illuminated the president’s moral deficiencies for all to see. This damages the institution of the presidency, damages the reputation of our country, and damages both the spirit and the future of our people. None of the president’s positives can balance the moral and political danger we face under a leader of such grossly immoral character.
Whether Mr. Trump should be removed from office by the Senate or by popular vote next election—that is a matter of prudential judgment. That he should be removed, we believe, is not a matter of partisan loyalties but loyalty to the Creator of the Ten Commandments.
To the many evangelicals who continue to support Mr. Trump in spite of his blackened moral record, we might say this: Remember who you are and whom you serve. Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trump’s immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency.
If we don’t reverse course now, will anyone take anything we say about justice and righteousness with any seriousness for decades to come? Can we say with a straight face that abortion is a great evil that cannot be tolerated and, with the same straight face, say that the bent and broken character of our nation’s leader doesn’t really matter in the end?
We have reserved judgment on Mr. Trump for years now. Some have criticized us for our But when it comes to condemning the behavior of another, patient charity must come first. So we have done our best to give evangelical Trump supporters their due, to try to understand their point of view, to see the prudential nature of so many political decisions they have made regarding Mr. Trump.
To use an old cliché, it’s time to call a spade a spade, to say that no matter how many hands we win in this political poker game, we are playing with a stacked deck of gross immorality and ethical incompetence. And just when we think it’s time to push all our chips to the center of the table, that’s when the whole game will come crashing down. It will crash down on the reputation of evangelical religion and on the world’s understanding of the gospel. And it will come crashing down on a nation of men and women whose welfare is also our concern.

Christianity Today is an influential mainstream magazine for evangelicals, with 4.3 million monthly visitors on its site and hundreds of thousands of print subscribers. President Trump won 81% of the evangelical vote in 2016, a group that makes up about 25% of the electorate, according to the Pew Research Center.

President Donald Trump unloaded on the evangelical publication Christianity Today after its editor in chief came out in favor of his impeachment and removal from office.
The president trashed Mark Galli, who wrote the editorial condemning Trump’s morality and urged evangelicals to drop their support.

Published 7 hours ago Franklin Graham slams Christianity Today for invoking father's name in call for Trump's removal By Caleb Parke | Fox News The son of the late pastor Billy Graham said his father would have been "disappointed" by Christianity Today's editorial calling for the removal of President Trump, which was widely celebrated by the left and crashed its website.
Evangelist Franklin Graham told Fox News his father "dissociated himself from the magazine years ago" and was "disappointed" himself by the "moral high ground" they've tried to take but don't have for invoking his father's name to get rid of Trump.
"My father knew Donald Trump, believed in Donald Trump, and in this last election, he voted for Donald Trump," the president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse added. "And if he were here today, I'm sure he would tell you that himself."
Graham responded in a lengthy Facebook post late Thursday to the editorial titled "Trump Should Be Removed From Office," just a day after the House of Representatives passed two articles of impeachment against him.
"Christianity Today released an editorial stating that President Trump should be removed from office, and they invoked my father’s name (I suppose to try to bring legitimacy to their statements), so I feel it is important for me to respond," Graham wrote. "Yes, my father Billy Graham founded Christianity Today; but no, he would not agree with their opinion piece. In fact, he would be very disappointed."
The pro-Trump evangelical revealed his father not only supported the president but also cast his last vote for him -- a fact he has repeatedly declined to confirm before his post. Billy Graham, who died in 2018 at the age of 99, served as a spiritual adviser to decades of presidents from Harry S. Truman to Barack Obama.
President Trump responded to the editorial Friday morning, tweeting the "far left magazine ... knows nothing about reading a perfect transcript of a routine phone call and would rather have a Radical Left nonbeliever, who wants to take your religion and your guns, than Donald Trump as your President."

"No President has done more for the Evangelical community, and it’s not even close. You’ll not get anything from those Dems on stage. I won’t be reading ET again!" the president added.
Galli responded to Trump's tweet on CNN saying he disagrees with the president "on about seven or eight different levels," calling the magazine "centrist," and revealing that he is stepping down as editor-in-chief soon.
He said fellow Christians need to speak out about "manifestly immoral" matters and said CT is not read by "far-right evangelicals."
"Christianity Today, when the opportunity presented itself to speak the truth clearly and charitably, we did it," Galli said. "We didn't shirk our duty and we did what we were called to do."
In his post, Graham points to Trump's many accomplishments that evangelicals have celebrated from pro-life policies to championing religious freedom at home and abroad. "Christianity Today wants us to ignore that?"
"For Christianity Today to side with the Democrat Party in a totally partisan attack on the President of the United States is unfathomable," Graham added, referencing Mark Galli, the editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, for failing to recognize that not a single Republican voted for impeachment.
In the editorial, Galli called Trump's July 25 phone call to the Ukranian president "profoundly immoral" and he labeled the case against the president "unambiguous."
Graham said the magazine, which rebukes evangelicals who back Trump and warned that their support "will crash down on the reputation of evangelical religion and on the world’s understanding of the gospel," is being used by the "left for their political agenda."
"It’s obvious that Christianity Today has moved to the left and is representing the elitist liberal wing of evangelicalism," Graham concludes. "Is President Trump guilty of sin? Of course he is, as were all past presidents and as each one of us are, including myself. Therefore, let’s pray for the President as he continues to lead the affairs of our nation."
Jenna Ellis, a senior legal adviser for the Trump 2020 campaign, slammed the magazine in an op-ed for the Washington Examiner as being run by "pious 'Never Trumpers' who feel morally justified...in a self-serving desire to be proven right..."
Jerry Falwell, Jr., president of Liberty University, called the editorial "CT unmasked" on Twitter: "Less than 20 percent of evangelicals supported Hillary Clinton in 2016 but now @CTmagazine has removed any doubt that they are part of the same 17 percent or so of liberal evangelicals who have preached social gospel for decades."

The Flag in the Whirlwind: An Update from CT’s President Why our editor in chief spoke out against Trump, and why the conversation must continue.
snip((((
While the Trump administration may be well regarded in some countries, in many more the perception of wholesale evangelical support for the administration has made toxic the reputation of the Bride of Christ.
We are happy to celebrate the positive things the administration has accomplished.
The problem is that we as evangelicals are also associated with President Trump’s rampant immorality, greed, and corruption; his divisiveness and race-baiting; his cruelty and hostility to immigrants and refugees; and more.
In other words, the problem is the wholeheartedness of the embrace. It is one thing to praise his accomplishments; it is another to excuse and deny his obvious misuses of power.
Similarly, this is neither a criticism of the evangelical Trump voter nor an endorsement of the Democrats. The 2016 election confronted evangelical voters with an impossible dilemma: Vote for a pro-choice candidate whose policies would advance so much of what we oppose, or vote for an extravagantly immoral candidate who could well damage the standing of the republic and the witness of the church. Countless men and women we hold in the highest regard voted for President Trump, some wholeheartedly and some reluctantly. Friends we love and respect have also counseled and worked within the Trump administration. We believe they are doing their best to serve wisely in a fallen world.
We nevertheless believe the evangelical alliance with this presidency has done damage to our witness here and abroad. The cost has been too high.
American evangelicalism is not a Republican PAC. We are a diverse movement that should collaborate with political parties when prudent but always standing apart, at a prophetic distance, to be what Martin Luther King, Jr. called “the conscience of the state.” That is what we believe. This is where we plant our flag. We know we are not alone.

Christian magazine editor quits in row over Trump's evangelical support BBC | 24 December 2019
Evangelical support for US President Donald Trump is back in the spotlight after the resignation of a leading journalist for Christian Post magazine.
Journalist Napp Nazworth's departure follows an op-ed from another Christian outlet calling for Mr Trump's removal.
The ensuing outcry has served as a proxy war among US evangelists over Mr Trump's largely unchallenged grip on the religious right.
He has claimed overwhelming evangelical support since taking office.
So what is behind this conflict and what are the consequences for the president?
How did this controversy begin?
Last week, after the US House of Representatives voted to impeach Mr Trump, Christianity Today published an editorial by editor-in-chief Mark Galli urging the president's removal.
Deriding Mr Trump's "grossly immoral character", Mr Galli described the president's expulsion from office as a Christian imperative: "Not a matter of partisan loyalties but loyalty to the Creator of the Ten Commandments".
Mr Trump "attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president's political opponents," Mr Galli wrote. "That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral."
And the magazine - founded by one of the most influential preachers of the 20th Century, Billy Graham - went even further, pointing the finger at evangelicals who have remained devoted to the president "in spite of his blackened moral record".
"Remember who you are and whom you serve," Mr Galli wrote.
Why is this significant?
Since Mr Trump became president, he has laid claim to resounding support from evangelical Christians - bolstered by his selection of evangelical Mike Pence as his vice-president.
In the 2016 presidential election, 80% of self-identified white, born-again or evangelical Christians voted for Mr Trump, according to analysis by Pew Research Center.
Mr Trump's selection of evangelical Christian Mike Pence as vice-president has bolstered his support among the religious right
Mr Trump's success among evangelicals follows a political pattern in the US: in every presidential election since 2004, white, born-again and evangelical Christians have, on the whole, voted for the Republican nominee.
But the president's support among evangelicals cannot be explained merely by party affiliation. Indeed, the famously brazen US president managed to match or exceed the support among this demographic won by President George W. Bush in 2004, and presidential candidates John McCain in 2008 and Mitt Romney in 2012.
And since Mr Trump's move to the White House, he has kept a series of promises to his religious voters.
He nominated two reliable conservatives, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, to the Supreme Court.
Add to that the loosening of government mandates that health-insurance plans include free contraceptive coverage.
Mr Trump also eased restrictions on political activities by religious organisations. And he increased restrictions on government support for international organisations that provided family planning and abortion counselling.
And, in an apparent snub to what some see as an unofficial ban on the traditional Christmas greeting, the president has said: "We're saying Merry Christmas again".
Such promises have paid off. While support among some US Christians has dipped, an NPR-PBS NewsHour-Marist poll from earlier this month found 75% of white evangelical Christians approve of Mr Trump, compared with 42% of US adults overall.
This support is critical to Mr Trump: a victory in the 2020 election will rely on another win among social conservatives, evangelical Christians included.
What has the response been?
Christianity Today's searing editorial provoked a split reaction among American Christians - mirroring divisions among Christians in their support for the president.
Some followed the magazine's lead in breaking ties with the Republican president, while others doubled down on their support for Mr Trump.
On Sunday, almost 200 evangelical leaders and other supporters of the president, including former Arkansas governor and two-time Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and former Minnesota Republican Michele Bachmann, penned a letter slamming Christianity Today.
"Your editorial offensively questioned the spiritual integrity and Christian witness of tens-of-millions of believers who take seriously their civic and moral obligations," they wrote. "It not only targeted our President; it also targeted those of us who support him, and have supported you."
The president also weighed, taking to Twitter on Friday to dismiss Christianity Today as a "far left magazine".
But while the article lost the magazine a reported 2,000 subscriptions, it gained 5,000 new readers, drawn from a younger and more diverse audience, the Washington Post said.
And on Sunday, Christianity Today president Timothy Dalrymple defended the editorial, decrying the "enormous damage" wrought by "the alliance of American evangelicalism with this presidency".
"Christianity Today is theologically conservative. We are pro-life and pro-family," Mr Dalrymple wrote. But "the cost has been too high. American evangelicalism is not a Republican PAC".
What does Napp Nazworth have to do with it?
On Monday, journalist Napp Nazworth announced he was "forced to make the difficult decision to leave The Christian Post".
Mr Nazworth - a political editor and near 10-year veteran of the Christian magazine, whose Twitter biography includes the hashtag #NeverTrump - said the publication "decided to publish an editorial that positions them on Team Trump".
He continued: "I can't be an editor for a publication with that editorial voice."
Both Mr Nazworth's decision and Christianity Today's editorial suggest cracks in Mr Trump's evangelical stronghold.
But a Christian rush to the Democrats remains unlikely, especially as the parties remain divided on abortion rights, a key issue for social conservatives.
According to a study from Pew in October: while whites who identify as Christians still make up about two-thirds of all Republicans, they now amount to only one quarter of Democrats.

Published 2 hours ago Christianity Today editor who called for Trump’s removal is retiring Friday By Dom Calicchio | Fox News
Mark Galli, the editor-in-chief of Christianity Today who infuriated nearly 200 evangelical leaders by writing a December editorial calling for President Trump’s removal from office and describing the president as being “profoundly immoral,” is stepping down at the end of this week.
Galli confirmed his departure in a Twitter message on New Year’s Eve.
“Well, my retirement is a couple of days away,” Galli wrote. “Will be posting here more often now that I have more time on my hands. Well, given last week, maybe not.”

“Our editor in chief for two more days,” the magazine posted, followed by a crying emoji.

Galli’s Dec. 19 editorial, titled “Trump Should Be Removed From Office,” came one day after the House of Representatives approved two articles of impeachment against President Trump, making the nation’s 45th president the third in history to be impeached – behind Samuel Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998. (Richard Nixon resigned in 1974, before the House could vote to impeach him.)
The Galli editorial, in a leading publication for the nation’s evangelical Christian community – and one that was founded by the late Rev. Billy Graham in 1956 – sparked an intense reaction, including from Graham’s son, the Rev. Franklin Graham.
“My father knew Donald Trump, believed in Donald Trump, and in this last election, he voted for Donald Trump. And if he were here today, I'm sure he would tell you that himself.” — The Rev. Franklin Graham, son of the late Rev. Billy Graham
While many liberals hailed Galli, saying his decision to oppose Trump showed “courage,” nearly 200 evangelical leaders condemned what he had written, saying the anti-Trump editorial had “offensively questioned the spiritual integrity and Christian witness of tens-of-millions of believers who take seriously their civic and moral obligations.”
In his editorial, Galli invoked the mission of Billy Graham, to "help evangelical Christians interpret the news in a manner that reflects their faith."
"We want CT to be a place that welcomes Christians from across the political spectrum, and reminds everyone that politics is not the end and purpose of our being," Galli wrote. "That said, we do feel it necessary from time to time to make our own opinions on political matters clear — always, as Graham encouraged us, doing so with both conviction and love. We love and pray for our president, as we love and pray for leaders (as well as ordinary citizens) on both sides of the political aisle."
Galli acknowledged that Democrats "have had it out for [Trump] from day one" and that the president "did not have a serious opportunity to offer his side of the story" during the impeachment process.
However, Galli added, “the facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.”
Galli, 67, a native of California, had previously announced his departure plans in October.
“I’ve been EIC for about seven years now,” he wrote in CT at the time, “and as it goes with many jobs, I think I finally understand what I should have been doing all along! It has been quite a ride for the ministry, economically and journalistically. Some definite lows, to be sure, and some wonderful highs. Aside from a strong sense of God's call, what's given me most joy is the people I have worked with — men and women who are passionate about their faith and dedicated to their work, and have a sense of humor to boot."
Christianity Today CEO Dr. Timothy Dalrymple announced at the time that Galli’s successor will be Dr. Daniel Harrell, a longtime minister and author.

Hispanics at Miami megachurch rally for Trump Saturday, January 4, 2020 | Michael F. Haverluck (OneNewsNow.com)
President Donald Trump kicked off his first rally of the year Friday night by holding an Evangelicals for Trump event at King Jesus International Ministry in Miami, Florida – one of the largest Hispanic churches in the United States.
The president addressed more than 5,000 evangelical Christians at the Miami megachurch, assuring Latinos that he is the only 2020 presidential candidate who is has actively defended the religious freedom of Americans.
“We’re defending religion itself,” Trump told the predominantly Hispanic crowd, according to the Associated Press, noting how Democratic presidential candidates continue to threaten their ability to worship and express their faith. “A society without religion cannot prosper. A nation without faith cannot endure.”
The Republican president seeking a second term hinted that whoever will be running against him for president on the Democratic Party’s ticket will do all he or she can to take away the religious protections he has fought hard to secure for believers during his three years in the White House.
“We can’t let one of our radical left friends come in here, because everything we’ve done will be gone in short order,” Trump warned thousands of Latinos in Florida – the swing state with the third-most Electoral College votes … behind only California and Texas.

Not in the midwestern red states. I don't know what religion you're thinking of, but the born-agains, Protestants of all stripes, etc., etc., all have guns. In my area we don't even need a permit for concealed carry. Children are on the front page of the local paper posing with deer they've shot. Yee-Haw.

An open letter from black church leaders and allies to Christianity Today
"The hard Right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it." --Billy Graham.
(signed at the bottom)
We wanted to write collectively as a diverse group of ministerial leaders, doctorates, lay-persons and people who simply love God to express our sincere gratitude for Christianity Today’s printing of the brilliantly and objectively written article by (the magazine's then Editor-in-Chief) Mark Galli, entitled “Trump Should Be Removed from Office."
We truly respect your organization’s stance on the stated principle “We want CT to be a place that welcomes Christians from across the political spectrum…”
The late Billy Graham, CT’s founder, gave us a loud warning in an article he wrote for Parade Magazine in 1981, when he said:
“I don’t want to see religious bigotry in any form. It would disturb me if there was a wedding between the religious fundamentalists and the political right. The hard right has no interest in religion except to manipulate it.”
In closing, we who have signed below want to go on record in stating plainly that we support Galli’s accurate and timely article along with your followup article in defense of the stance of holding the president accountable. We agree that Trump should be removed and has consistently shown himself incapable and unworthy of the position as the leader of this country.
No, we cannot sit by the wayside and not respond with a counterargument defending the importance of truth and integrity. If truth no longer matters, then the church can no longer be the hope of the world.
“Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.” — Paul's Letter to the Ephesians

Published 1 hour ago Influential evangelical leader on why Trump will get more Christian support in 2020 By Caleb Parke | Fox News
President Trump is set to mark Religious Freedom Day by signing an executive order expanding "Constitutional prayer" in public schools-- just one of the reasons why his re-election is so important to Christians, Stephen Strang, the founder and CEO of Charisma News, told Fox News.
The author of "God, Trump, and the 2020 Election: Why He Must Win and What's at Stake for Christians if He Loses" said Trump is pushing back against an anti-Christian culture with his new action.
"The joke is as long as there's exams, there'll be prayer in schools," Strang told "Fox & Friends" co-host Steve Doocy, adding, "It's their constitutional right. We have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and there's been a hostile view of religion in our culture and evangelical Christians have felt this and Donald Trump is doing some things to reverse that and we appreciate it."
The self-described "Christian journalist" imparts the "spiritual point of view" about Trump, as opposed to the political or cultural one that is often discussed in the media.
"I think that the hatred against Donald Trump can only be explained in spiritual terms," he said. "Christians call it spiritual warfare."
He explains Christians said "enough is enough" and were praying for a leader, and Trump is the "very unlikely person" who "has become a champion of religious liberty."
Strang added, "Who would've thought that a New York billionaire that is a TV celebrity would become a champion of religious rights or become president of the United States?... I think he's been a great leader but he doesn't get much credit for it."
After the now-retired Christianity Today editor-in-chief, Mark Galli, called for the removal of Trump from office, the Trump 2020 campaign launched Evangelicals for Trump at a Latino megachurch in Miami.
Trump won white evangelicals by more than 81 percent in the 2016 presidential election, according to exit polls, and Strang predicts he "absolutely" will earn their support again in November.
"I think his evangelical percentage is going to go up," Strang said.

Subject: Evangelical Christian's Song About The Betrayal He Feels From Evangelical Trump Support Goes Viral Sat Jan 25, 2020 6:31 pm

Evangelical Christian's song about the betrayal he feels from evangelical Trump support goes viral
Deitrich has written a song, titled “Hymn for the 81%” that is going viral across the Interwebs. Addressed to the evangelical churches which formed his religious upbringing, the song has been described as “a love song to the church and a call to repentance.” It directly addresses the hypocrisy of the white evangelical church’s support of Donald Trump in the face of Biblical teaching.
It makes quite an impression, not heavy handed or too accusatory, but it gets the point across very well. The reactions to the video, which has been viewed about 100,000 times thus far, suggest it is striking a rare chord:
Daniel Deitrich's hymn is both a love song to the church and a call to repentance, which castigates the Trump administration for "putting kids in cages, ripping mothers from their babies," but blames the church for failing to rein them in: "I looked to you to speak on their behalf/But all I heard was silence/Or worse you justify it."
It is also a warning to the church: "You weaponized religion and you wonder why I’m leaving to find Jesus on the wrong side of your walls … ”
