AHAA! Obamas Oscar gotta Burn trump to Ashes;

February 9, 2020
President Barack Obamas’ first film wins best documentary Oscar

“American Factory”, a documentary produced by Barack and Michelle Obama for Netflix about a manufacturing plant in the US Midwest reopened by a Chinese billionaire, won the Oscar for best documentary on Sunday.

The film charts a Midwestern rust belt community’s journey from optimism at the giant plant’s reopening — bringing back vital jobs — toward creeping anger and disillusionment as the Chinese management imposes its strict, exhausting demands on workers and sacks those who do not comply.

“Our film is from Ohio and China,” director Julia Reichert said while accepting her golden statuette. “But it really could be from anywhere that people put on a uniform, punch a clock, trying to make their families have a better life.”

“Working people have it harder and harder these days, and we believe that things will get better when workers of the world unite,” she said.

Co-directed by Reichert and Steven Bognar, the film is an all-access look at how both American and Chinese workers, from blue-collar to management, had their lives transformed by powerful global economic forces that caught the eyes of none other than the Obamas.

The former first couple acquired “American Factory” at the January 2019 Sundance Festival, where it had won the directing award, and was released on Netflix in August that year as the first offering from their Higher Ground Productions company.

Both Barack and Michelle Obama congratulated Reichert and Bognar for their win Sunday, with the former president calling the film “a complex, moving story about the very human consequences of wrenching economic change.”

“Glad to see two talented and downright good people take home the Oscar for Higher Ground’s first release,” he tweeted.

Michelle said she was “glad to see their heart and honesty recognized — because the best stories are rarely tidy or perfect.”

“But that’s where the truth so often lies,” she wrote on Twitter.

“The Edge of Democracy”, “The Cave”, “For Sama” and “Honeyland” were also up for best documentary.

The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor began by calling out Senate Republicans for refusing to allow witnesses, particularly former National Security Advisor John Bolton, to testify in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.
Things got rough when Clint Eastwood stood up and yelled, "Shut your goddamn mouth you priviledged hairbag asshole! WTF do you know about politics?"

Oscars 2020: Number of TV viewers falls to all-time low
BBC | 2 hours ago

The US live TV audience for the Oscars fell to an all-time low on Sunday.

Roughly 23.6 million viewers tuned into the awards ceremony, according to the US broadcaster ABC, citing Neilsen.

The ratings fell sharply from last year when 29.5 million people watched, amid an industry-wide decline in linear TV viewing.

South Korea's Parasite made history, becoming the first non-English language film to win best picture since the awards began 92 years ago.

Renee Zellweger won best actress for playing Judy Garland in Judy. Joaquin Phoenix was named best actor for Joker.

Despite the ratings slump, the Oscars, which had no host for the second year running, remains the most-watched awards show.

In 2019 the ceremony managed to buck a four-year trend in declining viewers and increased its audience by 11% to 26.5 million.

Musicians Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper performed a much-celebrated duet, while Queen opened the show.

It was the first year the ceremony went without a host, which some had pointed to as a reason for its increased popularity.

But the new record low indicates the Oscars was not able to repeat that success in 2020.

Singer and actress Janelle Monae opened the three-and-half hour show, followed by performances by musicians Elton John and Billie Eilish.

The awards were presented by celebrity duos, including Timothee Chalamet and Natalie Portman, and Steve Martin and Chris Rock.

South Korean viewers celebrated when Parasite director Bong Joon-ho spoke partly in South Korean during his acceptance speech.

Other awards ceremonies, including the Emmy Awards, Golden Globes, and Grammys, also lost viewers this year.

The number of people who watched the 2019 Emmy Awards live fell by 32%.

Oscars: The biggest winners

Parasite - 4
1917 - 3
Ford vs Ferrari - 2
Joker - 2
Once Upon A Time in Hollywood - 2

The World War One epic had been the favourite to win best picture, but its awards all came in the technical categories.

Brad Pitt won the first Oscar of his career for best supporting actor in his role in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.

Best actress winner Renee Zellwegger paid tribute to Judy Garland, who was nominated for two Oscars but never won.

Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix used his acceptance speech to cover topics from animal rights, to the environment and racism.
