REVEALED: Trump wasted half a billion on 10,000 ventilators that won’t arrive until September 2022
A new report from the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform found that the Trump Administration repeatedly delayed an Obama-era order from the health-technology company Philips for 10,000 ventilators, wasting half-a-billion dollars for machines that won’t even arrive until September 2022.
According to the report, in 2014, the Obama Administration signed a contract with Philips to add 10,000 ventilators to the nation’s stockpile by June 2019.
Though Philips delayed the fulfillment until November 2019, had they been held to that deadline, the nation would have had plenty of ventilators for when the coronavirus epidemic started in March 2020.
However, the Trump Administration granted Philips three extensions.
“On January 21, 2020, when the first coronavirus case was reported in the United States,” the report states;
“Philips approached the Trump Administration about accelerating the delivery of ventilators under its existing contract. The Trump Administration ignored this opportunity, and for six weeks, it did not respond to Philips’ offer.”
When Peter Navarro — Assistant to the President, Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy — and other senior officials in the White House negotiated a new contract with Philips, they ended up scrapping the Obama-era terms and agreed to pay almost Five-times the price set under those Obama terms.
While Philips had sold ventilators to other purchasers for prices as low price of $9,327 per unit, the Trump Administration ended up paying $50,000 per unit.
“The documents show that the Administration accepted Philips’ first offer without even trying to negotiate a lower price,” the report reads.
The ventilators may arrive after a vaccine for the illness does. In the meanwhile, the U.S. has surpassed over 156,000 coronavirus deaths.
This revelation comes just a day after Vanity Fair revealed that the Trump White House scrapped a national testing plan for the epidemic, thinking that coronavirus would mostly kill of blue states voters and the administration could then blame Democratic governors for it.

It wasn’t long ago that New England and west cost states were suffering under the weight of the coronavirus. They locked down states, shutdown the economies and mandated masks.
Meanwhile, red states like Texas, Georgia and Florida were celebrating what they thought was smart leadership.
“And guess what,” announced Fox News host Sean Hannity on May 20. _“Now it’s time for all the states to follow their lead.”
That lead sent them down the pathway to being the worst in the country for coronavirus cases as COVID-19 ravaged everyone from children to the elderly.
“Governor DeSantis now looks like a genius,” bragged former GOP Gov. Mike Huckabee (AR).
Florida is now the second worse state in the country after California, which has nearly 19 million more residents than the southern state.
The same day Hannity was singing DeSantis’ praises, Vice President Mike Pence championed the state, saying __they were “leading the way.” Indeed they were leading the way, ((it was just off of a cliff.
“Gov. Greg Abbot, we can learn a lot from you and a lot from Gov. DeSantis,” Hannity said on May 18. “There’s a lot to learn from your success,” Hannity cheered. Texas is now the third-worst state in the country, after Florida and California.

The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus illness COVID-19 world-wide rose above 20.7 million on Thursday and the U.S. suffered its biggest death toll since May with almost 1,500 fatalities counted in a single day.
The U.S. has averaged more than 1,000 deaths a day for two weeks, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University. Wednesday’s deaths were mostly concentrated in Sun Belt states that saw the worst case spikes in June and July, the New York Times reported. A Times analysis of data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that at least 200,000 more Americans than usual have died since March, or about 60,000 more than the official data is linking to COVID-19. The findings were in line with a report published by “The Conversation.”
While case numbers are stabilizing in some regions, the high number of deaths suggests the pandemic is far from under control. President Donald Trump continued to push for schools to reopen on time and in person on Wednesday and to urge football players to “go play football.”
Ahead of Trump’s briefing, former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, made his first public appearance with Sen. Kamala Harris, his newly announced running mate. The pair slammed Trump’s management of the pandemic, pledged to bring back lost jobs and prop up the middle class.
“I’m ready to get to work,” said Harris. The U.S. leads the world in coronavirus cases “because of Trump’s failure to take it seriously from the start,” she said.
In other developments:
• Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis compared the challenge of reopening schools with the obstacles faced by the U.S. Navy SEAL team that assassinated Osama bin Laden in 2011. “Just as the SEALs surmounted obstacles to bring Osama bin Laden to justice, so too would the Martin County School system find a way to provide parents with a meaningful choice of in-person instruction or continued distance learning,” he said at a briefing, according to a transcript published on Florida’s government website
• Dr. Michael Osterholm, epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota, repeated his message that the U.S. needs to shut down again and go back to Square 1 in dealing with the crisis, which he acknowledged is “shocking news” that people “don’t want to hear.”
“The bottom line is that if you look at the country, we are an anomaly among the higher-income countries of the world in that we never did lock down sufficiently; we only slowed down to get the virus activity by May to a so-so level,” Osterholm said in an interview on MSNBC. “Other countries worked harder to get the viral activity more fully under control. ‘We walked away after 80% containment.”
• India now has the fourth highest death toll from COVID-19 in the world, after passing the U.K. overnight, the Johns Hopkins data shows. India has 2.4 million cases, or third highest after the U.S. and Brazil, and 47,033 deaths.
• There was bad news from China where two people who were confirmed to have had and recovered from the virus have tested positive again, according to media reports. A 68-year old woman in the Chinese province of Hubei, where the virus was first detected late last year, tested positive this month after recovering from COVID-19 in February.
A man who was confirmed to have the illness in April also tested positive again, although media reports said he was not suffering any symptoms. Other anecdotal evidence relating to patients retesting positive after apparently recovering have made health experts concerned that the level of protective antibodies developed to fight the virus may quickly fall away and leave patients at risk of reinfection.
• Germany reported 1,445 new COVID-19 cases in a single day, the highest number since May 1, according to the Robert Koch Institute. “This trend is unsettling,” the RKI said in a statement. “We absolutely have to avoid a further accentuation of the situation.”
Germany’s most populous state, North Rhine Westphalia in the West and Hamburg in the North are showing the biggest increases in new cases. Germany has been widely admired for its success in containing the pandemic. The country has 221,219 confirmed cases and 9,217 deaths for a mortality rate of 4.2%, Johns Hopkins data shows, or 11.11 deaths per 100,000 people. That compares with the UK’s 14.8% mortality rate, equal to 70.37 deaths per 100,000 people. The U.S. mortality rate is 3.2% or 50.75 deaths per 100,000 people, the data shows.

There are now 751,033 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 world-wide, the Johns Hopkins data shows. At least 12.9 people are confirmed to have recovered.
Brazil is second with 3.16 million cases and 104,201 deaths.
India is third, followed by Russia with 905,762 cases and South Africa with 568,919. Mexico has 498,380 cases and 54,666 deaths, the third highest in the world.
The UK has 315,583 cases and 46,791 fatalities, the highest in Europe and fifth highest in the world. China, where the illness was first reported late last year, has 89,114 cases, and 4,699 fatalities

MyPillow guy gets Trump to trade in his advocacy for hydroxychloroquine for a flower oil to cure COVID-19
President Donald Trump has come up with another cure to the coronavirus pandemic. According to Axios, Trump thinks that the oil from a flower could help save people.
“Trump has expressed enthusiasm for the Food and Drug Administration to approve an extract from the oleander plant as a dietary supplement to cure COVID-19, despite lack of proof that it works,” said Axios in the Sunday report.
According to the report, Trump got the idea from an Oval Office meeting with the My Pillow guy and Dr. Ben Carson, a brain surgeon who runs the Department of Housing and Urban Development. MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell owns a financial stake in the country using the flower oil.
During the meeting, Trump “basically said: … ’The FDA should be approving it,'” Lindell told Axios.
The involvement of the Secretary of HUD and MyPillow.com in pushing a dubious product at the highest levels should give Americans no comfort at night about their health and safety during a raging pandemic,” said one of Trump’s own officials about the meeting.
When asked by Carson was even involved in the meeting, much less pitching a botanical extract as a miracle cure, his office said he’s on the coronavirus task force.

Trump announced Sunday that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized convalescent plasma for emergency use to treat patients sickened by the novel coronavirus.
Convalescent plasma has already been used to treat roughly 70,000 Americans who have contracted the coronavirus.
Gottlieb, a former FDA commissioner under Trump, said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” earlier Sunday that granting emergency use authorization for the treatment would allow for “easier access in certain settings,” but he noted that it is already widely available.
“What the emergency use authorization will allow is probably more commercial distribution and it will allow manufacturers or plasma products to more easily recoup the costs,” Gottlieb said.
“The bottom line is it’s widely available right now. Patients are getting it. It’s incremental, and incremental gains are important here, but we need to view it for what it is.”
Experts have raised concerns that the plasma is already so widely available that it is hindering the ability to study exactly how well it actually works through randomized clinical trials, which have been struggling to recruit volunteers, given that many patients can get the treatment even outside a trial.
Trump, who has been looking to announce progress in fighting the virus, touted the news as a “historic breakthrough”
COVID-19 convalescent plasma has not undergone the same type of review as an FDA-approved or cleared product.

“These lies demoralized the scientific community and cost countless lives in the United States,” wrote Herbert Holden Thorp, editor in chief of Science magazine.
The editor in chief of Science magazine, one of the world’s leading academic journals, published a harsh denunciation of President Donald Trump on Friday, laying into him for lying to the American people and demoralizing the scientific community about the deadliness of COVID-19.
In his editorial for Science, which has been in publication since 1880, Herbert Holden Thorp addressed Trump’s admission that he intentionally downplayed the coronavirus to journalist Bob Woodward, as revealed in Woodward’s upcoming book, “Rage.”
“We can hear Trump’s own voice saying that he understood precisely that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 ... was deadly and spread through the air,” Thorp wrote.
“As he was playing down the virus to the public, Trump was not confused or inadequately briefed: He flat-out lied, repeatedly, about science to the American people. These lies demoralized the scientific community and cost countless lives in the United States.”
Thorp argued that Trump’s comments to Woodward demonstrated that he clearly understood the lethal, airborne nature of COVID-19, as well as the virus’s ability to affect both young and old.
In public, however, Trump compared it to the common flu, pushed to reopen schools and accused Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious disease expert in the U.S., as “a little bit of an alarmist.” Fauci recently said that he was “depressed” at America’s inability to control the virus.
Since his conversations with Woodward went public, Trump has claimed that these efforts were intended to prevent panic among the general public.
Trump referred to himself as an “environmentalist” at a recent rally, but his administration has routinely downplayed science. Trump handwaved climate change and worked to roll back nearly 100 Obama-era regulations intended to limit pollution.
Thorp alluded to such attitudes and said that Trump’s actions regarding the coronavirus hit a new low.
“Over the years, [Science] has commented on the scientific foibles of U.S. presidents,” Thorp said. “Inadequate action on climate change and environmental degradation during both Republican and Democratic administrations [has] been criticized frequently. ...
But now, a U.S. president has deliberately lied about science in a way that was imminently dangerous to human health and directly led to widespread deaths of Americans. This may be the most shameful moment in the history of U.S. science policy.”

Politico reported Monday that the move comes after HHS spokesman Michael Caputo took a leave of absence after posting a bizarre rant on Facebook and allegations that Trump has gone to war with the Food and Drug Administration.

On Wednesday; The New England Journal of Medicine reported, the nation’s foremost medical journal, called for U.S. leadership to resign over the COVID-19 pandemic response — an unprecedented move for the apolitical publication.
The editorial does not endorse a candidate, but singles out the Trump administration’s failures.
“This crisis has produced a test of leadership. With no good options to combat a novel pathogen, countries were forced to make hard choices about how to respond,” said the editorial.
“Here in the United States, our leaders have failed that test. They have taken a crisis and turned it into a tragedy.”
“Anyone else who recklessly squandered lives and money in this way would be suffering legal consequences,” continued the editorial.
“Our leaders have largely claimed immunity for their actions. But this election gives us the power to render judgment. When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent. We should not abet them and enable the deaths of thousands more Americans by allowing them to keep their jobs.”
