Published 37 mins ago California coronavirus cases increasing at similar to New York By Brie Stimson | Fox News
National Guard deployed in California, Washington, New York amid coronavirus pandemic How can the military assist in the coronavirus response? Retired Army Gen. Anthony Tata weighs in.
California’s secretary of Health and Human Services Tuesday said the state’s coronavirus cases are increasing at a rate on par with New York, which has the most cases in the U.S.
New York currently has 10 times as many cases as California, but Secretary Mark Ghaly said California could see a surge in hospitals in one to two weeks, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“We originally thought that it would be doubling every six to seven days; we see cases doubling every three to four days,” similar to New York’s infection rate, Ghaly said during a news conference.
Los Angeles to shut off water, power of nonessential businesses that refuse to close amid coronavirus
New York had more than 33,000 cases and 366 deaths. Hospitals are overwhelmed by patients and health care workers are facing shortages of face masks and personal protective gear.
“We are now, in New York City, the epicenter of this crisis in the United States of America,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Sunday, according to The Guardian. “The worst is yet to come.”
Last week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom warned that more than half of the state's nearly 40 million residents could become infected in the next two months without mitigation efforts and later instituted a “Safer-at-home” order, forcing all "nonessential" businesses to close.
One week after Newsom’s order, more than 3,000 had tested positive and 65 had died.
Cuomo issued a similar stay-at-home order soon after California's, along with several other states.
Newsom said this week nearly 67,000 people have been tested in the state, but stressed it’s not yet enough to get a clear picture of how many will become infected.
He said he’s working on increasing the rate of testing, but cautioned that social distancing will need to continue for some time.
“We know it’s had an impact on bending that curve and buying us time,” Newsom said of the “Safer at Home” order, according to The Times. “Every day, that is another day that we’re getting more assets, more physical and human resources, prepared for a worst-case scenario.”

Coronavirus: US overtakes China with most cases 14 minutes ago REUTERS
The US now has more confirmed cases of coronavirus than any other country with at least 82,404 positive tests.
According to the latest figures collated by Johns Hopkins University, the US overtook China (81,782 cases) and Italy (80,589).
The grim milestone came as President Donald Trump predicted the nation would get back to work "pretty quickly", after 3.3 million layoffs.
More than 1,100 people with Covid-19 have died in the US.
What did President Trump say?
At a White House briefing on Thursday afternoon, Mr Trump said: "They have to go back to work, our country has to go back, our country is based on that and I think it's going to happen pretty quickly.
"We may take sections of our country, we may take large sections of our country that aren't so seriously affected and we may do it that way."
He added: "A lot of people misinterpret when I say go back, they're going to be practising as much as you can social distancing, and washing your hands and not shaking hands and all of the things we talked about."
As the US overtook China with the most coronavirus cases, Mr Trump cast doubt on the figures coming out of Beijing, telling reporters "you don't know what the numbers are in China".
Mr Trump said he would be speaking to President Xi Jinping by phone on Thursday night.
The US president denied that the Chinese leader had asked him to "calm down" the language he uses to refer to the pandemic.
In a letter to state governors on Thursday, Mr Trump said his team plans to release federal social distancing guidelines that may advise some regions to loosen restrictions.
Mr Trump wrote of a "long battle ahead" and said "robust" testing protocols might allow some counties to lift their safeguards against the coronavirus.
He said the "new guidelines" will create low, medium and high risk zones that will allow the government to advise on "maintaining, increasing, or relaxing social distancing and other mitigation measures they have put in place".
Can the president order everyone back to work? No. Earlier this month, he set a 15-day period to slow down the spread of Covid-19 by urging all Americans to drastically scale back their public interactions during this time.
But the guidelines were voluntary and did not amount to a national order. Mr Trump has set a goal of Easter Sunday, 12 April, for reopening the country.
But the US Constitution makes clear states have the power for maintaining public order and safety, which scholars say means it is the responsibility of governors to decide when virus-related restrictions get lifted.
Currently 21 US states have told residents to stay in their homes in order to contain the pandemic.
The US president has used federal powers to tackle the outbreak, such as the Stafford Act, which has unlocked tens of billions of dollars in emergency aid.
He has also invoked the Defense Production Act, which would allow him to nationalise manufacturing to produce medical supplies.
But he has stopped short of actually using those powers.

Italy’s COVID-19 death toll tops 10,000 despite long coronavirus lockdown
The coronavirus toll in Italy shot past 10,000 on Saturday and showed little sign of slowing despite a 16-day lockdown.
The 889 new fatalities reported in the world’s worst-hit nation came a day after it registered 969 deaths on Friday — the highest single toll since the COVID-19 virus emerged late last year.

As the novel coronavirus continues to sweep the globe, researchers and doctors are identifying more and more symptoms that characterize COVID-19. Here's what to look for and what to do about it.
Digestive issues like diarrhea and nausea may be a more common symptom than previously thought
Malaise and confusion are atypical symptoms
Chills or muscle aches occasionally accompany COVID-19
Headaches and dizziness may also be signs of a viral infection
Runny nose is rarely a sign of coronavirus — it's more indicative allergies or a cold

Coronavirus: US death toll exceeds 5,000 56 minutes ago, REUTERS
The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic in the US has gone above 5,000, while confirmed cases worldwide are close to reaching one million.
There were 884 deaths in the US in 24 hours, a new record, according to Johns Hopkins University, which has tracked virus figures globally.
The latest victims include a six-week-old baby. More than 216,000 are now infected, the world's highest figure.
Reserves of protective equipment and medical supplies are almost exhausted.
This has left the federal government and individual US states competing for safety gear, while the unprecedented demand has led to profiteering, officials in the Department for Homeland Security were quoted by the Washington Post as saying.
The Trump administration says it can acquire adequate supplies, and has $16bn (£13bn) available to do so. State and local officials have complained about insufficient protective equipment such as masks and gowns as well as ventilators, needed to help keep patients breathing.
Meanwhile, US Vice-President Mike Pence warned the US appeared to be on a similar trajectory as Italy where the death toll has exceeded 13,000 - the worst in the world.
The number of confirmed infections across the US rose by more than 25,000 in one day. The worst-hit place is New York City, where nearly 47,500 people have tested positive and more than 1,300 have died.
Officials say as many as 240,000 people could die in the US from Covid-19 - the disease caused by the virus - even with the mitigation measures in place. In Connecticut, a six-week-old baby has died from coronavirus, believed to be America's youngest victim of the virus so far.
What is happening in New York?
Queens, New York City's second-most populous borough, has the highest number of confirmed cases and deaths. The area is home to a large population of low-income workers employed by the service sector who live in close proximity, and social-distancing guidelines are hard to enforce.
"While we are practising as a city, social distancing, you may have multiple families living in a very small apartment. And so it's easy to understand why there's a lot of transmission of Covid occurring," said Dr Mitchell Katz, head of New York City Health + Hospitals.
The city needed 2.1 million surgical masks, 100,000 surgical gowns and 400 ventilators, among other items, by Sunday, said Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has warned that April would be worse than March as the outbreak gathered pace. He said the goal was to triple the number of hospital beds, to 65,000.
"This will be an epic process through the month of April. It's herculean, but I believe it can be reached," he said on Twitter.
Sobering pictures from the city have shown bodies being loaded onto refrigerated mortuary lorries outside hospitals.
What is happening elsewhere in the US?
Other clusters are flaring up in places like Detroit. In New Orleans, Ellis Marsalis Jr, a jazz pianist, teacher and father of musicians Branford and Wynton Marsalis, became the latest high-profile figure to die from complications caused by Covid-19. He was 85.
Marsalis spent most of his career in his native New Orleans, and released more than 15 albums. "Ellis Marsalis was a legend. He was the prototype of what we mean when we talk about New Orleans jazz," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
Florida, Georgia and Mississippi have become the latest US states to issue lockdown orders. More than 75% of the country's population are now under orders to stay at home.
In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis softened his stance banning two cruise ships hit with coronavirus from docking in the state. He had been adamant that the ships should not land passengers at Fort Lauderdale, but now said the decision was up to the local authorities.
A staunch ally of President Trump, the governor faced pressure from the president on Wednesday to relent. He said he had understood the passengers were all foreigners, mainly Canadians and British, and did not realise that US citizens were also aboard.
What is happening elsewhere?
In the UK, the Wimbledon tennis tournament has been cancelled for the first time since World War Two British government officials vowed to ramp up testing within weeks, as the number of deaths in the UK saw its big daily increase - 563 Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised the largest economic programme in the country's history The official death toll in Iran has passed 3,000 while in Spain more than 9,000 have died
The coronavirus outbreak in the United States reached yet another grim milestone on Monday. The death toll has passed 10,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, with more than 347,000 confirmed U.S. cases of the virus — far more than any other country has reported.
Worldwide, there have been nearly 1.3 million confirmed coronavirus cases, and more than 70,000 deaths.
Italy (15,887) and Spain (13,055) have reported the most deaths from COVID-19 related complications, followed by the United States.
China, where the outbreak began, has reported just 3,335 deaths, though that figure is suspect, The Chinese government is widely believed to be understating the severity of the disease there, having come under harsh criticism for its attempts to hide the outbreak in the early stages. More than 82,000 cases have been reported there.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the novel coronavirus has infected more than 1,407,123 people across 180 countries and territories, resulting in over 79,091 deaths. In the U.S., all 50 states plus the District of Columbia have reported confirmed cases of COVID-19, tallying over 379,965 illnesses and at least 12,021 deaths.
Here's a look at the 10 states with the most COVID-19 cases.

Coronavirus: US records highest death toll in single day 9 hours ago
The US recorded the most coronavirus deaths in a single day with more than 1,800 fatalities reported on Tuesday.
It brings the total number of deaths in the country to nearly 13,000, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The US has more than 398,000 confirmed cases, the highest number in the world. Global cases have exceeded 1.4 million.
However during a press conference President Donald Trump said the US might be getting to the top of the "curve".
Meanwhile the city of Wuhan in China, where the infection first emerged, ended its 11-week lockdown.
The new figures announced on Tuesday are up on the previous record of 1,344 which was recorded on 4 April
A number of musicians including Bruce Springsteen and Margo Price have paid tribute to him.
How hard has New York been hit?
A large proportion of the deaths announced were from New York state. Widely considered the epicentre of the outbreak, it recorded 731 deaths on Tuesday.
It is on the cusp of overtaking the entire country of Italy with its number of confirmed cases.
Governor Andrew Cuomo said the state appeared to be nearing the peak of its pandemic. Hospital and intensive care admissions were down.
The governor urged people to stay inside and continue with social distancing.
"I know it's hard but we have to keep doing it," he said.
New Yorkers have been told to avoid large gatherings as Passover and Easter approaches.
