Schoolies & Bus Conversions

I'm new here. For those who don't know me, I'm nearly as old as TWAP, and after retiring from my office gig nine years ago I took up school busing, and drove high schoolers for eight years until I retired last December (coincidentally, just in time to avoid driving a plague petri dish.) But in recent years the wife and I have talked of downsizing and done a lot of looking at schoolie and bus conversions as well as tiny houses, but ultimately decided simply to sell the big house and downsize into an apartment.

In any case, I've probably already seen most of the videos in this thread, but sadly have nothing topical to offer just now.

The only significant conversion I've done was recent, but it merely converted a 20 year old pickup truck into a 20 year old flatbed that at least gets compliments in the Lowe's and Rural King parking lots in spite of being a minimalist conversion with hobbyist overtones.

One question. Should seat belts be mandatory on all school buses?

Opinions vary. I could argue from either side of the aisle, but the practical answer is "no." The cost of staffing a bus with one monitor for every eight or ten students to keep their asses buckled up, a practice that would require monitors to move around unbuckled on a moving bus, really prices that option out of the market in most people's opinions. A simple cost/benefit analysis is all most school boards need, since students rarely get seriously injured in accidents and when they do the accident usually involves a locomotive, semi, or plunging over a cliff and seat belts probably would not have helped much.
