A Canadian was asked why he hates Trump and is making Facebook posts telling his American friends to vote against him in 2020:
“Way do I speak out so strongly and regularly against Trump? Am I crazy? Do I realize I'm not an American? Should you care one way or another? Take one minute to consider this please.
I may sound extreme, but I'm not crazy or paranoid. I know history and it reveals the all too familiar patterns. Donald Trump is a very real threat to democracy and civil rights in the US and also in Canada. That is why it is critical for the Democrats to win the election in November and it is why I speak out about it so much. This is not just about which policies you or I may favor, it is about our fundamental human rights.
If Trump wins, both the US and Canada will be threatened with a totalitarian dictatorship.
Sound far fetched to you? If it does, I empathize. Most of us have not experienced such a thing. But, it is a well worn pattern in recent history. An autocratic leader uses our fears to manipulate, whip people into a hateful frenzy and seize power "to protect us" from the mob.
Then, democracy descends into authoritarianism and military expansion follows. Russia has done this in the last 10 years or so. Germany and Italy did it in the 1930's and 40's. In each case, the "people" were too complacent to take action as this was happening, or they were manipulated by vague but powerful fear of "others" and "enemies" into supporting an obscene leader.
THIS IS HAPPENING NOW with Trump's base. So, please don't take our current democratic freedoms for granted. Previous generations earned those rights by taking action, speaking up and at times fighting wars. But, why should Canadians be worried, we aren't in the US?
Well, imagine having a dictator running the U.S., controlling the world's largest military, and Canada with our vast natural resources and huge unprotected border right alongside. Do we really think we would be safe from his aggressive moves?
Ask the people in the Crimea, or Ukraine, or Poland, or Austria, or France, or Ethiopia, or Belgium, or what used to be Czechoslovakia, or... you get the idea.
They found out the hard way, and not so long ago. Perhaps that will not happen in Canada and the U.S., or perhaps it will. I don't know for sure. But it is a quite realistic possibility! Should we just do nothing and wait to see what happens? Do we want to let our future, and our children's future, depend on Trump while we sit and watch? The clock is ticking down. We have four months before a critical election.
One last thing. In the coming four months, Trump will become even more obscene than ever as he plays the race, patriotism and hatred card. He did it again last night at Mount Rushmore and it will get worse. Don't be surprised and don't be manipulated into responding with violence and hatred.
Respond with resolve and find a way to help the Democrats win! In America (and ultimately Canada too) the democracy we cherish is indeed under attack from a lawless, hateful and dangerous force... Donald Trump.” - A concerned Canadian Show less

Canada largely wins WTO case in lumber dispute with U.S
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Canada largely won a case before the World Trade Organization on Monday in a long-running dispute with the United States over U.S. duties imposed on Canadian softwood lumber exports.
A three-person panel determined that the duties, designed to counter Canadian subsidies, breached global trading rules because Washington had not shown that many prices paid by Canadian firms for timber on government-owned lands were artificially low.
The U.S. industry has complained for decades that Canadian rivals benefit from provincial government subsidies, allowing them to sell their wood for less.
"Canada expects the United States to comply with its WTO obligations. U.S. duties on Canadian softwood lumber must not persist," Mary Ng, Canada's trade minister said of the decision.

New name for a Canadian town called Asbestos Published 9 hours ago
The name change comes after years of debate in the Quebec town
The small Canadian town of Asbestos that decided it needed a rebrand has done away with the name derived from its mining heritage.
The Quebec town, home to some 7,000 people, voted for "Val-des-Sources" as its new moniker.
The town was once the location of the world's largest asbestos mine.
It was given the English name for the mineral - rather than the French amiante - in the late 19th Century.
But the town's council said the connotation hindered its ability to attract foreign investment, and announced last November that the hunt was on for a new name.
The town, about 150 km (95 miles) east of Montreal, finally announced the winning title with some fanfare on Monday evening.
It was picked after a lengthy consultation and a vote by town residents, including those as young as 14.
About half the town residents eligible to cast ballots did so. Val-des-Sources won with just over 51% of the vote in the third round of voting.
The name is "above all, inspiring for the future", Mayor Hugues Grimard said.
Why the Canadian town of Asbestos wants a new name
Other possibilities on the shortlist were L'Azur-des-Cantons, Jeffrey-sur-le-Lac, Larochelle, Phénix and Trois-Lacs, which came in second place.
Asbestos won't be changing its town signs immediately, said Mr Grimard, who suggested it could be the end of the year before the formal, legal switch.
"It'll be a nice Christmas present," he said.
The town of Asbestos thrived for over a century on the chrysotile asbestos manufactured at its open-pit mine. The mine suspended operations in 2011.
Once considered a miracle mineral, asbestos was used in construction industries for strengthening cement, in insulation, roofing, fireproofing and sound absorption.
But by the mid-20th Century, concerns about its use were growing as more and more studies linked asbestos to deadly illnesses.
Breathing in asbestos fibres has been linked to cancer and other diseases.
Global demand for the product plummeted as countries around the world began banning it. Canada was a latecomer, only banning its manufacture, import, use and export in 2018.

Quebec stabbing: Two dead after attack by man in medieval clothes
Police confirm at least two people have died and say they have arrested a man in his mid-20s.
There are more than a few posts by people who are not happy about the results of the election and want to move to Canada. “Trump supporters moving to Canada, no! Get that out of your head. We don’t want you here. We don’t want your COVID here. We don’t want your ideals here. We don’t want anyone like that here.”
“We’re practically socialists up here!” “We have socialized medicine. Weed is legal everywhere. You can get an abortion for free anywhere. And we all wear masks! We take this pandemic seriously.”
''So stay the fuck away from Canada.''

Canada unveils largest economic relief package since WW2 Published 11 hours ago
Coronavirus pandemic
Canada's Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will unveil the country's new spending plan
Canada's federal government will spend C$100bn ($77bn, £58bn) to kick-start the country's post-pandemic economy.
It is "the largest economic relief package for our country since the Second World War", Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said on Monday.
The spending will bring the deficit to a historic C$381.6bn by March 2021.
The wide-ranging plan includes targeted relief for hard-hit business sectors, investments in long-term care homes and distribution of a Covid-19 vaccine.
The announcement - the first full fiscal update from Canada's Liberal government since the onset of the pandemic - comes as the country battles a steep second wave of Covid-19 infections. The number of active cases in Canada has more than doubled in November alone, bringing the total number of infections to more than 376,000 - according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University. So far, more than 12,000 Canadians have died.
"When the virus is under control and our economy is ready for new growth, we will employ an ambitious stimulus package," to be spent over the next three years, Ms Freeland said in the House of Commons on Monday. The spending will amount to 3-4% of Canada's GDP.
'I'm just looking for whatever I can get' Canada projects $343bn deficit amid pandemic
'World faces worst decline since 1930s depression'
Monday's fiscal plan pledges C$1bn to help provinces and territories improve Covid-19 infection control in long-term care facilities. Industries that have been particularly vulnerable to economic shutdowns like tourism, travel and arts will be eligible for business loans up to C$1m, with a 10-year term. And for Canada's lower and middle income families, package promises up to C$1,200 for each child under 6.
An additional C$1bn will also be directed to vaccine agreements. "Canada has secured the most diverse vaccine portfolio in the world," Ms Freeland said. Canada has secured seven different vaccine purchase contracts, she said, enough for each Canadian to receive 10 doses, free of charge.
And to pay for the expansive plan, Canada will see its largest budget shortfall since World War Two.
On Monday, Ms Freeland defended the record deficit as affordable - thanks to low interest rates - and necessary for Canada's economy. "As we have learned from previous recessions, the risk of providing too little support now outweighs that of providing too much," she said. "We will not repeat the mistakes of the years following the Great Recession of 2008."
Stores and shopping centres - like Toronto's Eaton Centre - have suffered under lengthy virus shutdowns
Predicting the new deficit tally would reach C$400bn on Sunday, opposition leader Erin O'Toole called the spending plan "startling".
Coronavirus shutdowns have battered the country's economy. Last month, Statistics Canada reported an unemployment rate of 8.9%, meaning there are 1.8 million Canadians unable to find a job.
Monday's announcement is among the first major challenges for Ms Freeland, who took over the role of finance minister in August, after her predecessor, Bill Morneau, suddenly stepped down from the post amid an ethics scandal. Ms Freeland, 52, is the first woman to hold the position in Canada. She also serves as the country's deputy prime minister.

Canada considers adding Proud Boys to terrorist list alongside Isis and al-Qaida.
Public safety minister says group, founded by a Canadian, is ‘hateful and dangerous’, citing their role in the US Capitol attack
Canadian officials are considering designating the far-right Proud Boys as a terrorist organization alongside groups like Boko Haram, Isis and al-Qaida, following their role in the mob attack on the US Capitol last week.
Canada’s public safety minister said his office was closely watching the Proud Boys and the “ideologically-motivated violent extremists” within the group.
“They are white supremacists, antisemitics, Islamophobic, misogynist groups. They’re all hateful, they’re all dangerous,” the public safety minister, Bill Blair, told CTV News over the weekend. “We’re working very diligently to ensure that where the evidence is available, where we have the intelligence, that we’ll deal appropriately with those organizations.”
The minister’s office has not said when a determination on the group’s status as a terror group will be made.
Calls for a terrorist designation were first made last week by Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic party, who accused the Proud Boys of helping to execute “an act of domestic terrorism” when members of the group stormed the Capitol.
“Their founder is Canadian. They operate in Canada, right now.”
The Proud Boys were founded in 2016 by the Canadian Gavin McInnes, a co-founder of Vice magazine. The group first made headlines in Canada three years ago, after five military reservists, dressed in the group’s black and yellow shirts, disrupted a protest by the Indigenous community over a controversial statue.
The group was banned by Facebook and Instagram in October 2018 after violating the platforms’ hate policies and is classified as an extremist organization by the FBI.
In the years since, the group has become a central figure in the violent white supremacist movement in US – and members view Donald Trump as a key ally. During the presidential debates, when Trump was asked to condemn white supremacist groups, he instead told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by”.
A terrorist designation in Canada would mean that the group’s assets could be seized or forfeited by Canadian authorities, although the group is unlikely to have large, hidden assets.
But the follow-on effects could be more significant, said one former intelligence analyst.
“Banks and companies like PayPal will probably not want to do business with anyone who has been outed as being a member of the Proud Boys. These kind of companies are pretty risk averse,” said Jessica Davis, a terrorism expert and former analyst with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.
In 2019, the Canadian government added two neo-Nazi groups, Blood & Honour and Combat 18, to its terrorism list – indicating it sees a growing threat from far-right organizations.
