‘Friday Night Massacre’ at US Postal Service as Postmaster General—a major Trump donor—ousts top officials

Government watchdogs, Democratic lawmakers, and pro-democracy advocates declared it a “Friday Night Massacre” for the U.S. Postal Service,

After news broke in a classic end-of-the-week dump that Louis DeJoy—a major GOP donor to President Donald Trump and the recently appointed Postmaster General—
had issued a sweeping overhaul of the agency, including the ouster of top executives from key posts and the reshuffling of more than two dozen other officials and operational managers.
The shake-up came as congressional Democrats called for an investigation of DeJoy and the cost-cutting measures that have slowed mail delivery and ensnared ballots in recent primary elections.

Twenty-three postal executives were reassigned or displaced, the new organizational chart shows.

Analysts say the structure centralizes power around DeJoy, a former logistics executive and major ally of President Trump, and de-emphasizes decades of institutional postal knowledge.

All told, 33 staffers included in the old postal hierarchy either kept their jobs or were reassigned in the restructuring, with five more staffers joining the leadership from other roles.

Already under fire for recent policy changes at the USPS that mail carriers from within and outside critics have denounced as a sabotage effort to undermine the Postal Service broadly as well as disrupt efforts to carry out mail-in voting for November’s election amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The moves unveiled late Friday were viewed as an overt assault on democracy and a calculated opportunity to boost Republican’s long-held dream of undercutting or privatizing the government-run mail service while also boosting their election prospects in the process.

“Another Friday night massacre by this administration—and this time dealing another devastating blow to our postal service.”

“It is vital that the U.S. Postal Service not reduce mail delivery times, which could harm rural communities, seniors, small businesses, and millions of Americans who rely on the mail for critical letters and packages,” the letter stated.

“Eliminating overtime and directing postal workers to leave mail on the floor of postal facilities will erode confidence in the Postal Service and drive customers away, resulting in even worse financial conditions in the future.”
investigated by the Inspector General of the USPS.

Since 2016 alone, DeJoy has donated more than $2.5 million to the Republican Party and candidates. In 2020, prior to his appointment as Postmaster General by the GOP-controlled board of governors, DeJoy had already given approximately $360,000 to a Super PAC supporting Trump’s reelection.

As the Post notes in its reporting, the reshuffling of top managers and executives—as well as a hiring freeze and push for early retirements—”worried postal analysts, who say the tone of DeJoy’s first eight weeks and his restructuring have recast the nation’s mail service as a for-profit arm of the government, rather than an essential service.”

According to Brian Tyler Cohen “Trump is actively sabotaging the election under our noses—this isn’t theoretical, it’s happening RIGHT NOW.”
Cohen said this situation should be treated like a “fucking five-alarm fire” and said action must be taken by both lawmakers and the U.S. public without delay.

Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-Va.), chair of the House subcommittee which has oversight for the USPS, said what DeJoy is trying to pass off as simple organizational restructuring is actually “a Trojan Horse” designed to destroy one of the nation’s most trusted and valued institutions from within.

Connolly on Friday night called it, “Deliberate sabotage to disrupt mail service on the eve of the election—an election that hinges on mail-in ballots.”

PostSubject: Officials Could Face Criminal Charges For USPS Sabotage    US Postal Service EmptyFri Aug 14, 2020 9:13 pm

Officials could face criminal charges for USPS sabotage —

Members of the Trump administration could face legal jeopardy over efforts to sabotage U.S. Postal Service operations to interfere with the 2020 presidential elections.

“Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ) made a criminal referral to the New Jersey Attorney General on Friday night, asking him to impanel a grand jury to look at possible breach of state election laws by President Trump, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and others for ‘their accelerating arson of the post office,’ he said.

Alarming headlines have emerged in recent days as many states prepare to facilitate widespread mail balloting due to the coronavirus pandemic.
President Trump openly admitted he was withholding federal aid from the postal service to prevent mail-in voting, and USPS has notified 46 states and D.C. that it will struggle to deliver some mail ballots on time.”

If DeJoy or others were charged in New Jersey for state crimes, Trump could not pardon them as his power only applies to federal crimes.

New Jersey isn’t the only state investigating the possible violations of the law.

In Arizona, Secretary of State Katie Hobbs on Friday wrote a letter to state Attorney General Mark Brnovich, asking him to investigate whether crimes have been committed.

Postal Workers Union Endorses Biden-Harris As Trump Threatens USPS.
The president has used baseless voter fraud claims to justify his continued reluctance to fund the postal service ahead of the election.

The National Association of Letter Carriers, a 300,000-strong union of active and retired postal carriers, on Friday threw its support behind presumed Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris in the November election.

The group’s endorsement comes at a critical juncture for the U.S. Postal.

“The Postal Service must not be allowed to fail,” union President Fredric Rolando said in a statement. “We must do everything we can to help the Postal Service thrive, not only for the men and women of the Postal Service but for the communities and businesses that we serve during this critical time.”

But President Donald Trump has repeatedly balked at the idea of nationwide mail-in voting ― which would allow Americans to avoid crowds ― baselessly claiming it will lead to voter fraud.
He has also argued that expanded access to voting by mail, “for whatever reason, doesn’t work out well for Republicans.” Despite his objections, the president and first lady this week requested mail-in ballots for Florida’s upcoming primary.

Rolando said that the Democratic presidential ticket exhibits “the experience, dedication, thoughtfulness and steady hands that will work to ensure that letter carriers and working families are put first.”

“Vice President Biden is ― was ― and will continue to be ― a fierce ally and defender of the United States Postal Service (USPS), letter carriers, and our fellow postal brothers and sisters.

NALC’s endorsement and our support come down to Joe’s steadfast support of us and his unwavering dedication to improving the lives of all working people throughout this great nation,” Rolando said.

The endorsement was the result of member surveys, polling and a discussion with Biden, according to the union president.

Trump this week seemingly admitted that he opposed USPS funding for the very fact that it is an essential part of a fair democratic election.

“Now they need that money in order to have the post office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots,” Trump said on Fox Business Thursday.

“But if they don’t get those two items, that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting, because they’re not equipped to have it,” he said.

Photo of the Day: Removed Letterboxes piled up in Wisconsin, USA.

* USPS has started reducing post office operating hours across several states and removing letter collection boxes, according to union officials.
Officials say that in the last week the USPS removed collection boxes in New York, Oregon, Montana and Indiana.

Newly installed postmaster general, Louis DeJoy has made sweeping changes to the public services of USPS, mainly aimed at cost-cutting leading to service slowdown across many States. Democrats view this as “voter suppression” connected to delaying and nullifying mail-in ballots, directed by the Trump administration.

Postal Service union president:
‘We’ve never seen anything like this even in a Christmas rush’

Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union, told shocking stories from members about mail being intentionally delayed by higher-ups.

Speaking to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Dimondstein explained that things like cutting back hours, changing transportation and cutting back on transportation of the mail, and other problems are intentional efforts to make it more difficult for people to ensure their votes are counted on Election Day.

“All these policies are slowing down the mail,”
he said. “We’re hearing that throughout the country, from workers.

I got a photograph today of packages that have a date sitting in a processing plant, sortation plant of August 7th, and the pictures was taken this morning August 16th.

Those packages have never been sorted.
We’ve never seen anything like this, even in a Christmas rush.
So, the workers are very troubled.
Our DNA as postal workers is to never delay, treat the mail as if it was our own, serve customers, live by the law that says ‘prompt, reliable and efficient services.’ So, it’s very troubling to postal workers that we should be delaying the mail.”

He said that he’s obviously not included in the conversations by political leaders, but that there is a general belief that it’s politically motivated.

“That is we’re dealing with an administration that’s not shy about their long-run and main goal, and that’s to privatize the postal service.

They put it in writing in June 2018, and that means break it up, dismantling it and sell it to private corporations.”
“We’re certainly seeing this will feed the agenda.
If anyone had any doubt about the dedication of postal workers, we’ve been on the front lines during these challenging times, still proudly serving the people of this country.
We’re dedicated to moving the mail, but we can’t have our hands tied by postal management that wants to do something else.”

Pelosi calls Congress back to vote on US Postal Service funding bill

Pelosi announced on the Speaker’s website Sunday that members of Congress must come back to vote this week for a funding bill that would ensure the USPS maintains all operations exactly as they were on January 1, 2020.

“Alarmingly, across the nation, we see the devastating effects of the President’s campaign to sabotage the election by manipulating the Postal Service to disenfranchise voters,” a statement from the Speaker’s office said.
“Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, one of the top Trump mega-donors, has proven a complicit crony as he continues to push forward sweeping new operational changes that degrade postal service, delay the mail, and – according to the Postal Service itself – threaten to deny the ability of eligible Americans to cast their votes through the mail in the upcoming elections in a timely fashion.

These delays also threaten the health and economic security of the American people by delaying delivery of life-saving medicines and payments. In 2019, 1.2 billion prescriptions were delivered through the Postal Services, including almost 100 percent from the VA to veterans.”

She went on to say that she has legislation from Oversight and Reform Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney.

The “Delivering for America Act,” prohibits the Postal Service from ushering in any of the last-minute changes by President Donald Trump to operations or level of service it had in place on January 1, 2020.

Democrats were to be appearing at the Democratic National Convention next week, but Pelosi called them back anyway. It’s unclear if Republicans will be willing to support such a bill.

Six states are huddling to decide whether they can sue Trump’s government for intentional Post Office delays

At least six state attorneys general are meeting to discuss whether they can use lawsuits against the administration to try and kill the U.S. Postal Service.

“State leaders are scrambling to see whether they can change rules to give voters more options, and Democrats are planning a massive public education campaign to shore up trust in the vote and the Postal Service,” said the report.

“He[Trump] is undermining the safest voting method during a pandemic and forcing people to cast a ballot in person,” said Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold (D). “It is reprehensible.”

There is a fear that the president has acted in an attempt to block mailed ballots, which he thinks will give more people an easier ability to vote. Traditionally, the more people who vote, the more chance a Democrat stands at winning, Trump acknowledged.

“The things they had in there were crazy,” Trump complained about the Democratic stimulus bill. “They had things — levels of voting that, if you ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”

The race to action comes amid escalating worries that even if the president does not succeed in blocking mail voting,
he has created a dangerous crisis of confidence that could jeopardize whether Americans view the eventual outcome as legitimate.

“He has succeeded enough that everybody is working overtime to clean up the mess,” said Kristen Clarke, president of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, a nonpartisan voting rights group.

“This is not just terrible policy, but it may be illegal under federal law and other state laws as well,”
the Post cited Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring (D). “A lot of work is being done literally as we speak over the weekend and at nights to try to figure out what Trump and DeJoy are doing, whether they have already violated or are likely to violate any laws and how we can take swift action to try to stop this assault on our democracy.

“We are exploring all available options, but we also want to make clear that people should continue to make use of mail options and not be deterred by the president’s effort to undermine the election,” said Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey (D).

“The reason the president doesn’t want people to vote by mail is that polls show that people who want to vote by mail tend to vote for Vice President Biden,” Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), a regular critic of Trump, said in a video interview with the conservative Sutherland Institute. “People who tend to want to vote in-person tend to want to vote for President Trump. So this is a political calculation.”

Trump rages about vote by mail — but his campaign just sent mail ballot request forms to his supporters

In another example of “do as I say not as I do,” President Donald Trump’s campaign has been caught sending out ballot request forms to his supporters after railing against voting by mail.

CNN reported that in North Carolina, Trump for Victory sent him a form where he could request an absentee ballot in the state. The form had Trump’s photo on it and his name.

“Is this a joke?” John Herter said his wife asked him when she saw the mail.
are the same.

In another Twitter rant, Trump went off on the state of Michigan for sending out applications similar to what Trump’s campaign did in North Carolina. At the time, Trump falsely called it “illegal,” and threatened to hold up any federal funds being sent to Michigan to help with COID-19.

The Trump campaign told CNN that their application shows how they are “working to ensure voters in every state know how their state’s sorting system works so that every eligible voter can cast their ballot and have their vote counted,” said Thea McDonald, deputy national press secretary.

You can see a full image of the application below:

“Are you going to let the Democrats silence you? Act now to stand with President Trump,” the card says.

His family lives in Lincoln County, and there is a group of voters who were sent the mailer over the past several days.

Trump has refused to help fully fund the U.S. Postal Service, saying that it is a worthless government service because it doesn’t turn a profit. The USPS isn’t supposed to turn a profit. It’s a government service.

Trump doesn’t seem to know the difference between vote-by-mail and absentee ballots. In most states, they are the same.

Democrats on Sunday called
for DeJoy’s testimony after
President Donald Trump suggested
that he is undermining the U.S. Postal Service
in order to win the election.

“The President has explicitly stated
his intention to manipulate the
Postal Service to deny eligible voters
access to the ballot in pursuit
of his own re-election,” House Democrats
said in a statement. “Alarmingly,
the Postmaster General – a Trump mega-donor
has acted as an accomplice in the
President’s campaign to cheat in the election,
as he launches sweeping new operational
changes that degrade delivery
standards and delay the mail.”

In a tweet, Connolly insisted
that DeJoy’s appearance “is not optional.”
He said that Democrats should
be prepared to use “inherent contempt”
to force the Postmaster General’s compliance.

Although “inherent contempt” has not been
used by Congress in nearly a hundred years,
it allows for “a substantial fine and
imprisonment for up to one year,”
according to the Congressional Research Service.

Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN) is also on
record supporting an “arrest” of the
Postmaster General if he refuses to testify.

Baby chicks arrive dead as Maine farmers
wonder why formerly
reliable USPS shipments aren’t working

The past several weeks have
brought stories of seniors and veterans
not getting their prescriptions because
of the U.S. Postal Service’s
slowdown by the Trump administration.
Small businesses are now suffering
as shipments are delayed and now
farmers are facing problems.

The Portland Press Herald reported Wednesday
that a Maine farmer went to the post office
to pick up 800 baby chicks that he had ordered
for his family farm, Pine Tree Poultry.
They’ve been processing cage-free chicken meat
for years, and for the first time,
the baby chicks were all dead.

“We’ve never had a problem like this before,”
said Pauline Henderson. This isn’t her first order,
but it’s certainly the first to end like this.
“Usually they arrive every three weeks
like clockwork. And out of 100 birds,
you may have one or two that die in shipping.”

She isn’t the only one with the problem, either;
any birds that went through
the Postal Service’s processing center
in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, died,
impacting farms in Maine and New Hampshire.

In Shrewsbury, 16 postal sorting machines
were taken offline as part of Postmaster General
Louis DeJoy’s effort to slow down the mail.

Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) is asking DeJoy
about the problem in a letter to him
and the Department of Agriculture.
Pingree’s office has been overwhelmed
with dozens of complaints.

“It’s one more of the consequences
of this disorganization, this sort of chaos
they’ve created at the post office,
and nobody thought through when they
were thinking of
slowing down the mail,” Pingree said.

Pingree also noted that the USDA
is responsible for enforcing farm regulations
that protect against animal cruelty,
and this could follow under those guidelines.

“This is a system that’s always worked before,
and it’s worked very well until these
changes started being made,” Pingree said.

USPS won’t reinstall postal boxes
in key Senate battleground until after the election:

On Thursday, Montana reporter Maritsa Georgiou,
who has been covering the Postal Service
cutbacks, gave an update on the
post boxes being removed in her state.

According to Georgiou, Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT)
has been in contact with USPS over the removals
, and “USPS tells him they will [not] be
reinstated until after the election.”

Montana is a critical state in the battle
over the Senate, as incumbent
Republican Steve Daines is fighting
a challenge from Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock.

‘Flat-out lied’: Elizabeth Warren and
a lot of other people sure think
Louis DeJoy committed perjury

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy
testified before the Senate for
several hours Friday, and a lot of people
are saying he committed perjury.

One of apparently several issues:
DeJoy’s testimony about overtime.

“Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said
today during his testimony that he has
not cut postal workers’ overtime.”
“But an internal USPS document
show how policy changes prohibit
‘extra’ or ‘late’ trips and mandating
that carriers ‘return on time.'”

Senator Warren is not the only one accusing
DeJoy of lying. Take a look:

Texas Tribune
@TexasTribune
1/ A postal workers' union leader in
San Antonio said today that the agency
sought to hide evidence of problems
when a congressman visited a facility this week.

#DeJoy is lying about the collection boxes.
I was a carrier route examiner and in 21 Years
I might have seen one collection box removed completely
from service and never I have I seen anything like this.

Robert Reich
@RBReich
Aug 21, 2020
Trump Postmaster General Louis DeJoy
just testified that more than 600 mail
sorting machines that were removed
will NOT be reinstalled —
including 135 machines in the key
battleground states of
Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

Congress must force his hand.
Peter Vroom 📫🌊
@PeterVroom1
DeJoy's testimony directly conflicts
with numerous media reports,
first-hand observations from postal
workers and consumers attempting
to use postal services.
I predict that he will have some
congressional perjury problems in his future.

Proof of Lie; Watch-- 30seconds.

A Washington Post expose on Postmaster General Louis DeJoy
for pressuring staff of his company to give money
to Republican candidates,
which he later reimbursed them for through bonuses.

The accusations against DeJoy are coming from,
among others, a human resources executive
who claims he had access to payroll records.

“My statement on today’s Washington Post story
‘Louis DeJoy’s rise as GOP fundraiser
was powered by contributions from
co. workers who were later reimbursed,
former employees say’
It is against the law to directly or indirectly
reimburse someone for a political contribution,
” wrote North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein.
“Any credible allegations of such actions
merit investigation by the appropriate
state and federal authorities.
Beyond this, it would be inappropriate
for me as Attorney General to comment
on any specific matter at this time.”

If an investigation discovers wrong-doing,
DeJoy will be among 14 Trump aides,
donors and advisers to be indicted or imprisoned
since he first claimed
he would only hire “all the best people.

On Tuesday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), a staunch ally of President Donald Trump, told reporters that the campaign finance allegations against new Postmaster General Louis DeJoy are “potentially a criminal offense.”

Cornyn added, however, that he doesn’t think Congress has substantial jurisdiction over the matter and that “the appropriate authorities need to look at it.”

DeJoy, a former logistics executive and Republican megadonor, has been accused by former employees of paying people at his company to donate to Republican politicians — which would be a crime both under federal and North Carolina state law.

PostSubject: Colorado Residents; Mailers Containing False Voting Information to Colorado Residents   US Postal Service EmptyMon Sep 14, 2020 2:36 am

9-13-2020

Federal judge blocks U.S. Postal Service from sending "patently false" mailers to voters.

A federal judge late Saturday ordered the U.S. Postal Service to immediately stop sending mailers containing false voting information to Colorado residents, saying he is "deeply troubled" by the decision to distribute the misleading postcards to households across the nation.

"As a result of false information contained in the notice, some Colorado voters may not vote because they erroneously believe that:

(1) they must request a ballot at least 15 days before the election;
(2) they must mail their ballot at least seven days prior to the election;
(3) they may not vote if they lose their ballot," wrote U.S. District Court Judge William Martínez in a 10-page ruling (pdf) granting Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold's request for a temporary restraining order.

"In reality, Colorado voters do not need to request a ballot at any time.
Voters who receive a ballot do not need to mail the ballot back at least seven days before the election; they may alternatively deposit that ballot at a drop-box or may choose to vote in person up to and including on Election Day,"
Martínez continued, describing some of the information on the mailer "patently false."

The ruling came hours after Griswold sued Postmaster General Louis DeJoy—a Republican megadonor to President Donald Trump—and other top USPS officials over the mailers, which have already arrived at households in Colorado and other states just weeks ahead of the November election.

QAnon letter carrier raided by federal agents —
who found undelivered mail in trash bags: report

On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh City Paper reported
that a local letter carrier raided by
special agents for hoarding mail in trash bags
is affiliated with the QAnon
conspiracy theory movement.

“Yesterday, the Baldwin home of
Sean Troesch was raided by special agents
from the United States Postal Service,
who confiscated eight large garbage bags
of undelivered mail, according to
KDKA,” reported Ryan Deto.

“KDKA also reported that the post office said
this latest haul didn’t contain any discarded
mail-in ballots, but neighbors told the station
trash bags ‘have been put outside Troesch’s house
almost every Sunday night for Monday morning pickup.''

Judge imposes sweeping order to ensure ballots are delivered on time despite Trump’s USPS slowdown: report.

The politics surround the United States Postal Service during the COVID-19 pandemic continued on Tuesday.

“United States Postal Service leadership received a sweeping set of orders from a federal judge on Tuesday, laying out ways the Postal Service must make sure ballots are delivered quickly because of the ongoing election and absentee voting deadlines,” CNN reported Tuesday.
“One week ahead of Election Day, Judge Emmet Sullivan of the DC District Court told the Postal Service to inform its employees that late delivery trips are allowed and the delivery of ballots by state elections deadlines is important.”

“The order is some of the most aggressive oversight USPS has faced yet in its handling of election mail. It adds to several directives the Post Office has weathered in court in recent months, after state governments won injunctions that would prevent policy changes put in place by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy that could have disrupted the quick delivery of mailed ballots to election officials.”

DeJoy has been highly controversial for slowing down the delivery of mail during the pandemic.

“The Postal Service also must provide daily updates to the court on mail delivery data and will appear daily before the judge,”
