Donald Trump has tested positive for coronavirus — and is at high risk
The leader of the free world announced early Friday morning that he has tested positive for COVID-19.
President Donald Trump has tried to downplay the virus and has held high-risk campaign rallies against the advice of medical professionals, even though he is at risk due to his age and obsesity.
Melania Trump has also tested positive for coronavirus.
Trump is now in quarantine and is effectively benched from his campaign rallies, if he follows the guidance from his Centers for Disease Control.

| Coronavirus: Donald Trump and Melania test positive 36 minutes ago
US President Donald Trump has said he and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for coronavirus and are now in quarantine.
The president, aged 74 and therefore in a high-risk group, announced the news in a tweet. "We will get through this together," he wrote.
It comes after one of his closest aides tested positive for coronavirus.
Hope Hicks, the 31-year-old adviser to the president, was the closest aide to Mr Trump to test positive so far.
She travelled with him on Air Force One to the first presidential TV debate with Democratic rival Joe Biden in Ohio on Tuesday. Some of Mr Trump's family members who attended the debate were seen not wearing masks.
Mr Trump has mostly spurned mask-wearing and has often been pictured not socially distanced with aides or others during official engagements.
Mr Trump's physician, Dr Sean Conley, released a statement, saying the president and the first lady were "both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence".
"Rest assured I expect the president to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments," the statement said.
According to Mr Trump's most recent physical examination earlier this year, he weighed 244lb (110.7kg). This is considered to be obese for his height of 1.9m (6.3ft).
But Dr Conley stated at the time that the president "remains healthy". Mr Trump will also have the best medical care available.
America's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says a person must go in quarantine for 10 days after a positive test.
US shares set to drop after Trump tests positive.
Earlier on Thursday, Mr Trump said he and his wife, who is 50, were going into quarantine after Ms Hicks's positive test.
He tweeted: "Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible!
"The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!"
It is not clear how Mr Trump's positive test will affect arrangements for the second presidential debate, which is scheduled for 15 October in Miami, Florida.
Mr Trump is not the first world leader to have tested positive. Earlier this year, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro were infected. They both have since recovered, although Mr Johnson had to receive regular oxygen treatment to help his breathing during hospitalisation.
What does this mean for the US election?
A week after Donald Trump told Americans not to worry about Covid-19 because "it affects virtually nobody" except the elderly and those with heart conditions, the president himself has tested positive for the virus.
It is difficult to overstate exactly how earth-shaking a development this is, just 32 days before the US elections.
The president will have to quarantine for treatment. Campaign rallies are off. The next presidential debate, in two weeks, is in question.
The recurring message from the president, that the nation is "rounding the turn" in its handling of the virus, has been undermined by his own illness.
Just two days ago, during the first debate, Trump belittled Democratic opponent Joe Biden for frequently wearing masks and not having campaign rallies that matched his own in size.
Now, the White House and the campaign will have to answer why the president took such a seemingly cavalier attitude toward protecting himself - and how many others in the White House and the higher echelons of the US government may have been exposed.
During times of national turmoil, the American public tends to rally in support of the president. It may not be enough to insulate him from the questions that follow, however.
What about Hope Hicks?
According to Bloomberg News, Ms Hicks is experiencing symptoms of Covid-19, and was quarantined on Air Force One on the trip back from a Minnesota rally.
Hope Hicks has been at Mr Trump's side for years
A White House official quoted by The Hill political news outlet said that contact tracing had been carried out "and the appropriate notifications and recommendations have been made".
During a phone call with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday night, Mr Trump said he and Mrs Trump "spend a lot of time with Hope".
Ms Hicks was a campaign spokeswoman during Mr Trump's candidacy before becoming communications director in his White House.
She stepped down in March 2018 to become chief communications officer at Rupert Murdoch's Fox, before returning to the White House in February.
Have there been other cases at the White House?
In May, Vice-President Mike Pence's press secretary Katie Miller tested positive and later recovered.
That same month, a member of the US Navy who was serving as one of Mr Trump's personal valets tested positive.
But the White House said at the time that neither the president nor vice-president were affected.
National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien, a number of Secret Service agents, a Marine One pilot and a White House cafeteria worker have also tested positive.
The coronavirus has infected more than 7.2 million Americans, killing more than 200,000 of them.
The White House tests aides and anyone else who comes into contact with the president daily. |

The editor-in-chief of China's government-backed newspaper, the Global Times, took a less sympathetic line, suggesting that Trump only had himself to blame for contracting the disease.
"President Trump and the first lady have paid the price for his gamble to play down the Covid-19," tweeted Hu Xijin.
"The news shows the severity of the US' pandemic situation. It will impose a negative impact on the image of Trump and the US, and may also negatively affect his re-election."

It's not like a Trump tweet is something to be believed, after all. |

President Trump is the “single largest driver” of coronavirus misinformation in the world:
Study; Anti-vaxxers and extremists "contributed far less to the overall volume of misinformation" than Trump
President Donald Trump is responsible for nearly 38% of coronavirus misinformation in traditional media around the world, according to a new study by researchers at Cornell University.
The study looked at what the World Health Organization has termed the "infodemic" of misinformation about the new coronavirus across 38 million traditional media articles published between Jan. 1 and May 26 in English-language media around the world.
"We found that media mentions of U.S. President Donald Trump within the context of COVID-19 misinformation made up by far the largest share of the infodemic," the study said, noting that Trump mentions comprised 37.9% of the overall misinformation conversation.
"The biggest surprise was that the president of the United States was the single largest driver of misinformation around COVID. That's concerning in that there are real-world dire health implications.
The researchers looked at 11 topics of misinformation, including conspiracy theories about the origin of the virus.
But the most widespread topic was "miracle cures," including Trump's hype of hydroxychloroquine and his suggestion that disinfectant could be used as a coronavirus treatment, which accounted for more misinformation mentions than all of the other topics.
The number of articles about "miracle cures" skyrocketed from fewer than 10,000 to more than 30,000 after Trump suggested people inject themselves with disinfectant in April.
Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, the former deputy commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration who now serves as vice dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, told The said that misinformation was "one of the major reasons" that the United States had lagged behind other countries in containing the virus.
"There is a science of rumors. It's when there is uncertainty and fear," he said, adding that consistent public health messaging was key to any successful strategy.
"This is what we need to save lives," he said. "If it's not done well, you get far more infections and deaths."
All conspiracy theories combined for 46% of misinformation mentions. Nearly 300,000 involved miracle cures, 49,000 mentioned conspiracy theories about the "deep state," 40,000 mentioned Trump's conspiracy theory that the virus was a Democratic hoax and 29,000 mentioned the Trump-hyped conspiracy theory that the virus had originated in a lab in Wuhan, China.
Conspiracy theories about Bill Gates' involvement with vaccines and 5G contributing to the spread of the virus were mentioned in more than 23,000 articles. Another 17,000 mentioned Antisemitic conspiracy theories, and 14,000 mentioned conspiracy theories about population control.
More than 11,000 articles mentioned conspiracy theories alleging Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was exaggerating the threat of the pandemic or stood to benefit from pharmaceutical treatments.
"Misinformation about COVID-19 is a serious threat to global public health," the study said.
"If people are misled by unsubstantiated claims about the nature and treatment of the disease, they are less likely to observe official health advice and may thus contribute to the spread of the pandemic and pose a danger to themselves and others."
Previous studies have found that people in counties which voted for Trump were less likely to social distance, and Republicans were far less likely to view the pandemic as a serious threat.
"It is especially notable that while misinformation and conspiracy theories promulgated by ostensibly grassroots sources, such as anti-vaccination groups, 5G opponents and political extremists, do appear in our analysis in several of the topics," the Cornell researchers wrote. "They contributed far less to the overall volume of misinformation than more powerful actors, in particular the U.S. president."

| President Donald Trump was airlifted from the White House to Walter Reed Hospital on Friday after testing positive for COVID-19.
The White House has downplayed Trump’s condition, with White House Dr. Sean Conley saying, “the president remains fatigued but in good spirits.”
But that is not what CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta is hearing.
Acosta reported that White House officials, “have serious concerns about Trump’s condition tonight and his symptoms are worse than those of the First Lady at this point, according to our sources.”
One of Acosta’s sources, a Trump advisor, was directly quoted.
“This is serious,” the source said.
The source described Trump as being “very tired, very fatigued, and having some trouble breathing.”

British newspaper worries Trump may have ‘roid rage’ from his COVID treatments
President Donald J. Trump is being treated for COVID-19 with a potent steroid called dexamethasone, a drug proven to reduce the risk of death and improve recovery time in patients. But could dexamethasone also be causing Trump to act out in what one British newspaper is calling “roid rage“? It’s possible.
Here is what we know: Dexamethasone is typically reserved for severely ill patients because clinical trials suggest that people with milder COVID-19 might fare worse after getting it.
It’s a drug that is known to contribute to psychiatric side effects, including mood swings, aggressive behavior, agitation, anxiety, and even infection in some patients.
There is a tie-in between the dosage amount and the risk associated with these side effects, however, there’s no data to show Trump’s current prescription amount.
“Steroids are always very dangerous medications to use,” said Dr. Edward Jones-Lopez, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
‘That is why it [dexamethasone] is used in severe to critical patients…There can be neuropsychiatric side effects. These are medications that we use very, very carefully.”
The side effects are not only short-lived with dexamethasone, but also longer-term – such as the risk of delirium, confusion or disorientation, as well as depression caused by withdrawal from the medication.
The Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) cites dexamethasone as a beneficial tool to help people with critical or severe COVID-19 who require extra oxygen. On the flip-side, studies show the drug may be harmful in people with milder COVID-19 because it can suppress their natural immune response.
According to Live Science, the term roid rage originally appeared in the mid-1980s, after a series of high-profile violent crimes committed by bodybuilders. This Hulk-esque fury may or may not actually exist, but there’s evidence to support a definitive departure from reality if steroids are ingested in high doses.
