Pete Buttigieg officially launches his 2020 US presidential bid
1 hour ago

Pete Buttigieg has become the first openly gay politician to run for US president

Pete Buttigieg has officially launched his bid to become the Democratic Party nominee for the 2020 presidential election and challenge Donald Trump for the White House.

He held his launch event in South Bend, the Indiana town where he has served as mayor since 2012.

Setting out his vision to "re-imagine our future", he promised a "totally different" politics from Mr Trump.

Should he win, Mr Buttigieg would be the first openly gay US president.

Which Democrat will take on Trump in 2020?

At 37, he is the youngest entrant in a crowded field of Democratic candidates that features Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, 77, and 69-year-old Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Despite his relative inexperience, the former Rhodes Scholar has surged in the polls in recent weeks, propelling him from the margins to the front of the pack.

In a veiled attack on the Trump administration, he railed against the "myth being sold" by those who sought to "stop the clock and turn it back".

Pete Buttigieg has proven popular in the polls

"It is time to walk away from the politics of the past and toward something totally different," he told supporters at his launch event.

His campaign has so far focused on gun control, climate change and LGBT rights and other progressive issues he hopes will appeal to millennial voters.

Mr Buttigieg's track record as mayor of South Bend, which has seen a struggling economy improve during his tenure, has also earned him plaudits.

'Audacious bid'

Since announcing his presidential run in January, Mr Buttigieg has garnered a wave of attention from the media and voters, raising more than $7m (£5.3m) in funds in the first quarter of 2019.

Analysts believe he could appeal to both moderates and progressives in the Democratic Party.

Opinion polls in Iowa and New Hampshire last week put Mr Buttigieg third in both states, behind Bernie Sanders and former Vice-President Joe Biden.

Mr Sanders launched his run last month, while Mr Biden, who has faced allegations of inappropriate touching by several women, is yet to announce his candidacy.

At the rally, Mr Buttigieg sought to differentiate himself from rivals as a candidate taking the "long view", especially on issues such as climate change.

"I recognise the audacity of doing this as a Midwestern millennial mayor," he said.

"More than a little bold… But we live in a moment that compels us each to act. The forces changing our country today are tectonic."

More than a dozen rivals are running to be the Democratic Party candidate for the presidential election in November 2020.

The process of selecting a nominee will begin early next year.

Who is Pete Buttigieg?

Born in South Bend in 1982, Mr Buttigieg studied at Harvard and Oxford, graduating from the latter in 2007 with first-class honours in philosophy, politics and economics.

He went on to work as a consultant at McKinsey & Company between 2007 and 2010 and served for seven months in Afghanistan as a Navy reservist in 2014.

At 29, he was elected mayor of South Bend, taking office in January 2012.

Despite an unsuccessful run for chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 2017, former President Barack Obama name-checked him as a rising star.

The video announcing he will run for president focuses on his role in the Rust Belt city's redevelopment and also takes aim at corruption and infighting in Washington.

He came out as gay in 2015 and married Chasten Glezman, a middle school teacher, last year.

What does he stand for?

In his rally speech, Mr Buttigieg positioned himself as the voice of millennials. Critics say his campaign has so far emphasised values and his personal story rather than a distinctive policy agenda.

He has, however, expressed support for:

Tougher action on climate change, including the so-called "Green New Deal" proposals
Gun control reform, namely universal background checks
A wealth tax to fund government spending
The withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan
Passing the Federal Equality Act, legislation that would give federal non-discrimination protections to LGBT people

A Biden candidacy = endless moronic yammering from Contards about:

1) Hillary’s e-mails
2) Obama’s birth certificate
3) AOC takes away yer gun. With her reef!

Pete Buttigieg visits Fox News, promptly criticizes two of network’s biggest stars

‘There is a reason why anybody has to swallow hard and think twice before participating in this media ecosystem.’

That’s Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg talking to Fox News host Chris Wallace on Sunday about the thinking behind his decision to engage in a town hall on the conservative network.

“A lot of folks in my party were critical of me for even doing this,” Buttigieg said Sunday. “And I get where that’s coming from.”

The “folks” he was talking about were the likes of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who just last week called Fox News a “hate-for-profit machine” and said she will take a “hard pass” on attending a town hall.

Then again, Senator Bernie Sanders took part in a Fox town hall last month that brought in more than 2.6 million viewers.

Buttigieg directly called out Fox hosts Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham for their reporting on immigrants, saying that some of the network’s prime-time personalities aren’t acting in good faith.

His comments echoed his thoughts from an email a day earlier. “I strongly condemn the voices on Fox and in the media which uncritically amplify hate and the divisive sort of politics which gave rise to this presidency,” he wrote.

Watch the videos:

Before the show, Trump tweeted that Fox was “wasting airtime” on Buttigieg:

Hard to believe that @FoxNews is wasting airtime on Mayor Pete, as Chris Wallace likes to call him. Fox is moving more and more to the losing (wrong) side in covering the Dems. They got dumped from the Democrats boring debates, and they just want in. They forgot the people.....

Buttigieg didn’t shy away from throwing his own jab at the president. He told Wallace that he understands why people are so interested by Trump’s tweets — because “it is the nature of grotesque things that you can’t look away.”

The crowd gave Buttigieg a standing ovation after he ended the town hall, which included a shout-out to the “Game of Thrones” finale — he says he’s looking forward to seeing where the Arya storyline goes from here.

Pete Buttigieg raises $24.8 million in the second quarter as his White House bid gains momentum
PUBLISHED 3 HOURS AGO, UPDATED 20 MIN AGO
Brian Schwartz, CNBC

Democratic rising star and 2020 presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg announced his fundraising total for the second quarter of his 2020 run for president early Monday morning.

The $24.8 million haul represents a massive total following his surge in the polls and a strong performance at the first Democratic debate in Miami last week. A poll conducted by Morning Consult after the debate showed Buttigieg with a 10 point increase in favorability.

Buttigieg is going into the third quarter with $22.6 million on hand.

Since he officially commenced his underdog campaign for president in April, the South Bend, Indiana, mayor has made inroads with big-money donors. He’s among three 2020 Democratic contenders, including former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris of California, who have received the support of top financiers across the country, as CNBC reported in June.

Buttigieg has enlisted the help of at least two dozen Democratic bundlers who had strong allegiances to former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton during her White House run. One of those fundraisers is Hollywood producer Nicole Avant, who decided to go all in and help Buttigieg raise campaign cash, his spokesman recently told CNBC. Buttigieg finished the first quarter bringing in $7 million.

At the debate, Buttigieg made headlines when he openly took responsibility for South Bend’s police force being predominantly white after an officer-involved fatal shooting of a black man. “Because I couldn’t get it done, ” he said when asked about the apparent disparity. He also made it clear he does not support free college for all, a policy proposal supported by many of his fellow Democrats.

Following the debate, some candidates announced they had one of their best fundraising days since their declaration to run for president.

Harris, after battling Biden on his prior work with segregationists while he was a member of the U.S. Senate, raised $2 million in online contributions in the 24 hours after the event, her campaign spokesman said. It represented their best day of online contributions since the start of her campaign, he added.

Biden’s team also said it had a great run of digital fundraising after the debate but has yet to release its top line figures.

All of the candidates were required by the Federal Election Commission to close their fundraising books on Sunday. The deadline to file is July 15.

Pete Buttigieg unveils $1.1 trillion climate change plan that would aim to create 3 million clean energy jobs
PUBLISHED 32 MIN AGO
Jordan McDonald | CNBC

Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg unveiled a $1.1 trillion climate change plan Wednesday morning, with a goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and creating over 3 million clean energy and infrastructure jobs in the next decade.

The climate proposal includes a $200 billion investment over 10 years in clean energy research and development, the creation of a $250 billion Clean Energy Bank to finance innovative technologies, a $250 billion fund matched with $250 billion in private investment with American companies to lead development of green technologies and a $50 billion seed fund for riskier and experimental ideas.

Buttigieg is polling at 4.7% behind rivals Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, according to a RealClearPolitics average. He released his plan ahead of Wednesday night’s “Climate Crisis” town hall, where candidates will each have 40 minutes to explain their climate policies in front of a live audience. Buttigieg is scheduled to be interviewed on his proposal at 10 p.m.

Buttigieg’s plan emphasizes the role of local and state government in resisting climate change, providing grants to his “Regional Resilience Hubs” and the creation of a “Climate Summit” comprised of local leaders such as governors and mayors.

The plan outlines a $200 billion transitional fund over 10 years for displaced workers and the renovation of existing plants and assembly lines in the creation of low-carbon products. It calls for an economy-wide price on carbon, set to automatically rise every year as well as more investment in carbon capture and direct air capture of carbon dioxide.

Buttigieg is not the first to suggest carbon capture investment, as frontrunner Biden’s plan also emphasized the nascent carbon-capture, which some critics have suggested only serves to extend the relevance of fossil fuel companies.

On the international stage, Buttigieg plans to reinstate America in the Paris Climate Agreement, invest $5 billion in climate mitigation strategies worldwide, and take a bigger role in international bodies such as the Arctic Council.

Buttigieg, the only millennial candidate in the presidential race, has also called for the creation of a “U.S. Climate Corps” open to high school graduates dedicated to educating communities and rebuilding infrastructure to make it more resilient to the effects of climate change.

Buttigieg’s net-zero emissions goal bears significant similarities to the other Democratic candidates in the field, who have formulated much of their platforms from the Green New Deal proposed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass.

Buttigieg’s role for federal investment is much more modest in comparison to proposals from Sanders, Warren and Biden.

Sanders has proposed the largest federal investment in combating climate change, laying out his plan for a $16.3 trillion outlay over 15 years in renewable energy and public infrastructure.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who dropped out of the race last week, had been the next closest candidate, with her proposal for a $10 trillion “moonshot” plan for the next decade.

Warren’s plan proposes a federal investment totaling more than $2 trillion over 10 years, while Biden’s plan offers a $1.7 trillion federal investment paired with local and state contributions totaling more than $5 trillion.

Pete Buttigieg fed up with LGBT media's criticism of his homosexuality
By Nick Givas | Fox News

2020 presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg criticized LGBT media for having an agenda when they cover his campaign and said that he can no longer read it and be himself.

Buttigieg appeared Wednesday on SiriusXM's "The Clay Cane Show," where he was asked about divisions within the gay community — he said the constant minutia and fractured opinions driving LGBT publications finally pushed him away.

“I just am what I am, and, you know, there’s going to be a lot of that. That’s why I can’t even read the LGBT media anymore because it’s all, ‘he's too gay, not gay enough, wrong kind of gay,'” the South Bend, Ind., mayor said.

Buttigieg said the most important thing for him is having the freedom to be himself, instead of allowing other people to dictate terms on how he should act.

“All I know is that life became a lot easier when I just started allowing myself to be myself and I’ll let other people write up whether I’m ‘too this’ or ‘too that,'” he added.

In the most recent Fox News poll on the 2020 Democratic primary, Buttigieg polled at 5 percent, behind Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and former Vice President Joe Biden.

Buttigieg defends religious institutions, hits Beto for threatening to rescind their tax-exempt status
By Nick Givas | Fox News

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg ripped fellow 2020 presidential hopeful Beto O'Rourke's proposal to strip churches of their tax-exempt status if they don't support same-sex marriage, saying the move is tantamount to declaring "war" on faith-based groups and will only further divide an already polarized nation.

O'Rourke made the statement during CNN's LGBTQ forum on Thursday night, when he was asked if "colleges, churches, charities" who weren't pro-gay-marriage, should be denied tax-exempt status. He immediately answered, "yes."

Buttigieg responded to the incident on "State of the Union" Sunday and said O'Rourke is playing with fire.

"The idea that you are going to strip churches of their tax-exempt status if they haven’t found their way toward blessing same-sex marriage, I’m not sure [O'Rourke] understood the implications of what he was saying," he said.

Pete Buttigieg says he disagrees with fellow 2020 Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke on using tax-exempt status to reinforce anti-discrimination laws with religious institutions: “I think that’s just going to deepen the divisions that we’re already experiencing.” #CNNSOTU
8:05 AM - Oct 13, 2019

"That means going to war, not only with churches, but I would think with mosques and a lot of organizations that may not have the same view of various religious principles that I do."

"There can be no reward, no benefit, no tax break for anyone or any institution, any organization in America, that denies the full human rights and the full civil rights of every single one of us," O'Rourke said during the forum. "Freedom of religion is a fundamental right, but it should not be used to discriminate."

Buttigieg, who is openly gay, stressed the need for a strict separation of church and state but reiterated how much more divisive the country would become if O'Rourke's proposed policy solution was ever carried out.

"Going after the tax exception of churches, Islamic centers or other religious facilities... that's just going to deepen the divisions that we’re already experiencing -- at a moment when we’re actually seeing more and more people motivated often by compassion and by people they love, moving in the right direction on LGBTQ rights," he said. "Which is obviously extremely important to me personally."

Pete Buttigieg Unveils His $2 Trillion Economic Plan
Scott Norvell
November 8, 2019, 9:56 am

Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg attempted to put some daylight between himself and his more left-wing opponents Friday by releasing a detailed economic plan aimed at shoring up the prospects of middle- and lower-income Americans.

The plan from the South Bend, Ind. mayor hits on hot-button issues like education and housing with promises of free or reduced tuition at public universities for people earning less than $150,000 annually, an expansion of affordable housing and child-care programs, and shoring up the Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income workers.

Pete Buttigieg
✔
@PeteButtigieg
We need an economy that delivers more. As president, I won't just measure success by looking at the size of the stock market or GDP—I'll look to you. Today, I'm announcing a plan to raise incomes, lower costs, and build a brighter future for all Americans. http://peteforamerica.com/economic-agenda

“In my mom and dad’s generation, nine out of every 10 kids did better than their parents,” Buttigieg writes in the introduction. “But for Americans of my generation, the odds are no better than a coin flip. Working family incomes have stagnated almost my entire life. Meanwhile, most of our economic growth goes to a smaller and smaller slice of the wealthiest Americans—a dangerous level of inequality that not only threatens our economic security, but also tears at the very fabric of our democracy and our society.”

Buttigieg charts a middle course with a plan to spend $500 billion to make colleges more affordable only for people in the middle- and low-income tiers, which he pegs at people who make less than $150,000 a year. Both of his more progressive opponents, Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) have proposed making college free for everyone.

The plan also calls for spending $700 billion on childcare programs, $430 billion on affordable housing, $170 billion for housing choice vouchers, $60 billion to encourage women- and minority-owned small businesses, and $50 billion in workforce training programs. He calls for $400 billion in tax cuts via an expanded Earned Income Tax Credit.

The programs add up to more than $2 trillion in new spending. Buttigieg says he will pay for his programs with additional taxes on the wealthy.

According to the Washington Post, Buttigieg has drafted Austan Goolsbee, a former chief economist for President Barack Obama, to advise his campaign on economic issues. “Pete is proposing plans targeted to making programs affordable for the middle class and below, not giving it free to everyone,” Goolsbee told the Post.

I agree with him that churches have the right to their own rules - you can't make a religion perform gay marriages. BUT there's a fine line there between church and state that must be honored in this country. So if you want a same sex marriage, you can't have a county clerk stopping you because THEIR religion says "no". Their CHURCH can refuse, but the legal stuff can't.

So far, my problem with him is only the "medicare for all who want it" thing - we have to go all in or all out on healthcare. Partial crap is what went wrong with the ACA. Sure, you could keep your plan, but so few did that the pool of individually insured shrunk so much the premiums shot sky-high. Can't have one foot on either side of the line, or it'll be exploited.

Medicare for all kinda scares me too, because I've personally been done wrong by so many plans that I LOOK for the loophole - so we get Medicare for all but what if the premium is 1K a month for all....I know they're saying it won't be like that but meanwhile they're raising the premiums and drawing new lines every year. I have no faith in anyone unless they show me the actual cost to ME.
