| Biden bears responsibility for high inflation: Poll Zachary Halaschak, Washington Examiner Wed, October 20, 2021, 9:46 AM
Sixty-two percent of people think President Joe Biden’s policies are very or somewhat responsible for soaring consumer costs, a new survey found.
The Morning Consult-Politico poll revealed that 40% of registered voters see the Biden administration as very responsible for the country’s high inflation, while 22% said his policies are somewhat responsible. A total of 28% said the administration is not too responsible or bears no blame for the higher prices.
About half said that people returning to pre-pandemic behaviors are a driving force behind inflation.
DEMOCRATS POUR FISCAL ACCELERANT ON THE INFLATION FIRE
Consumer prices rose 5.4% for the year ending in September, according to a report by the Department of Labor released this month, the highest pace of inflation since 2008. Inflation also recently hit the highest rate in 30 years in the gauge favored by the Federal Reserve.
While the majority of voters put some of the onus on the Biden administration, which has embarked upon a spending spree, an even larger amount of those surveyed expressed worry about the pace of inflation.
Nearly 90% of respondents said they were concerned about rising costs, with 58% saying they are very concerned and 31% saying they are somewhat concerned. Only 11% said they weren’t fearful about rising prices.
The Federal Reserve, which has held interest rates at near-zero since the pandemic began and has been purchasing $120 billion in monthly Treasury Department bonds and mortgage-backed securities, has consistently said that high inflation is only transitory and won’t stick around.
Others, such as Larry Summers, a Democrat who served as treasury secretary under former President Bill Clinton and as director of the National Economic Council under former President Barack Obama, billionaire investor Paul Tudor Jones, and JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, have warned that inflation is a danger that might linger. |

| ____ THE PROBLEM______
Cargo ships are so stuffed that ports are struggling to unload them.
Cargo ships are piled higher with containers than they’ve ever been, according to data from analyst firm IHS Markit. And the crowding is worst onboard ships sailing into US west coast ports. At the Port of Long Beach, which has been mired in record backlogs for months, the average ship now brings in 7,000 containers— up 70% from the pre-pandemic average of roughly 4,000 containers.
The glut of containers is overwhelming strained port infrastructure, especially at older ports like Long Beach in Southern California which already faced frequent delays, according to Turloch Mooney, the associate director for maritime and trade analysis at IHS Markit. “Quite a few of those ports have really gone beyond the breaking point now,” he said. “That would be what you’re seeing on the US West Coast.
______THE FIX______
Prices are jumping in large part because container ships are stranded at ports and because unloaded goods are waiting for trucks, leading to mass shortages and delays that have caused a longer than expected bout of inflation. The rising costs are eating into worker pay, creating a drag on growth and driving Republican criticism of Biden just as his multitrillion-dollar tax, economic, climate and infrastructure agenda is going through the crucible of congressional negotiations.
The White House responded to the backlog by finalizing an agreement for the Port of Los Angeles to become a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week operation. The hope is that nighttime operations will help to break the logjam and reduce shipping delays for toasters, sneakers, bicycles, cars and more.
“With holidays coming up, you might be wondering if the gifts you plan to buy will arrive on time,” Biden said at the White House. “Today we have some good news: We're going to help speed up the delivery of goods all across America.”

| LA shipping terminal operators say Biden's 24/7 edict won't work Tori Richards, Washington Examiner Thu, October 21, 2021, 3:27 PM
The operators of Los Angeles-area ports say President Joe Biden’s round-the-clock cargo mandate is not realistic, according to a report.
The president recently called for the shipping hubs to go into overdrive to ease the supply-chain crunch that has more than a hundred loaded freighters anchored off the coast. But 24/7 operations would cost the ports huge money in overtime, and the owners aren't eager to eat the expense.
“I don’t see how the terminals are going to be reimbursed. It’s big money,” Ed DeNike, president of SSA Containers, whose parent company Carrix operates three terminals in Long Beach, told the Journal of Commerce.
Standard terminal hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with some weekday nights until 3 a.m. Work slows significantly on Saturdays and shuts down completely on Sundays, the Washington Examiner discovered. Fully opening the terminals, including a 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. shift, is expensive, and truckers likely wouldn’t show up, the Journal reported.
LAZY CRANE OPERATORS MAKING $250K A YEAR ADDING TO PORT CRISIS, TRUCKERS SAY
DeNike said delivering containers to truckers on a graveyard shift costs $200 per container versus $35 to $40 during the first two shifts.
“We tell them, ‘Here is your cost. We’ll be open if someone is going to pay us,’” DeNike said, adding that SSA has not attracted enough interest to warrant expansion.
Last month, Total Terminals International agreed to run the third shift at its Long Beach pier Monday through Thursday and received two trucks over three days, the Journal reported. A third operator, Yusen Terminals, also said little interest existed but would staff the gates if needed.
On Oct. 13, Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka met with Biden and Port Envoy John Porcari about solving the crisis. Porcari was the deputy transportation director under former President Barack Obama and is part of the newly created Supply Chain Disruption Task Force
“For the president of the United States to be focused on activity at your port, the goods movement chain in general, is really unprecedented,” Porcari said in an LA ports online briefing. “That really shows the direct link between our nation’s economy and the goods movement chain which starts at our ports.”
Porcari said the move to 24/7 operations is “absolutely a nationwide opportunity” and the White House is dedicated to it. But he admitted the process will be challenging and no time frame exists for full compliance.
“This is not flipping a light switch,” he said. “The whole supply chain in the U.S. and globally was creeping along before the pandemic. The pandemic laid bare a system that really needs to be modified and the way we can do it is move forward to 24/7. We will knock down the barriers like bowling pins.”
Truckers have told the Washington Examiner that they are not the problem and that they routinely wait up to eight hours for cargo to be loaded onto their chassis. Most are independent operators and get paid by the load, so they welcome a solution to the crisis.
As of Wednesday, 106 ships are waiting offshore for a chance to unload their cargo. This broke a record of 100 ships that was reported on Oct. 18 |

| It will be worked out- Biden, yesterday, met with owners of the docks and suits from Walmart etc to get those crates unloaded and merchandise transported. He is ready to send in the National Guard to help unload and for commercial licensed Guard truckers to drive. All will start to move. |
