Children share a bowl of food in Moscow, Russia in the early 1900s. This picture and numerous others were taken by Maxim P Dmitriev who documented the incredibly poor conditions of peasants as well as everyday life from all over Russia. The images paint a very sad picture of the tough life of the poor, and can help show how the Russian Revolution was so welcomed in 1917.

A Romanian citizen waves his flag as the center of Bucharest is captured by Revolutionary Forces during the Romanian Revolution in 1989. In a fast and strong move, Revolutionary Forces moved into the city and overthrew the communist regime, executing their former dictator and his wife. Up to 1200 people were killed in the 11 days of fighting, with the bulk of the government forces turning on the regime. Numerous images has everyday citizens joining the uprising. They would appear on tanks, in large scale marches, or even behind Revolutionary soldiers during attacks. It was a well documented uprising as the last of the Soviet Blocks of the Warsaw Pact in Europe came to an end.

A man asks for help after some protestors marching for Civil Rights were beaten in Birmingham, Alabama, US in 1965. Despite often marching very peacefully, pro segregation local police or fellow students and civilians would attack anyone association with desegregation movements. Local Southern Whites as well as Whites from the North would join together and march all over the South with blacks to show unity in pushing for desegregation. Sadly, the ugly racism of America often put many protestors in the hospital, or worse, the morgue. The movement would prevail, and eventually the federal government forced all places in the US to not be legally allowed to discriminate against race.

Armenian women with their children in a concentration camp in Turkey (notice the barbed wire in the background) as part of the Ottoman Empire in 1915. This was during the Armenian Genocide as the Turks systematically wiped out up to 1.5 million Armenians. The women in this picture would eventually be separated from their children. The children would be bottled up in groups, and slowly starved to death by the Turks. The women, if useful, did labor jobs before dying as well from either starvation or execution. Notice no men are present, as they have most likely already been executed or put into forced labor. It is very likely every woman and child in this picture would be dead within a year from when this was taken. Turkey to this day still refuses to acknowledge the genocide.

Columbia University cheerleaders with their four-legged mascot, Peter, at the Thanksgiving Day American football game in New York City, US in 1924. Originally, all cheerleading squads were men. In fact, there was a push to keep it so for many years, but eventually it was integrated with women in the 1930s who now dominate cheer squads throughout the US. To help entertain the crowds, routines were introduced. Eventually it turned into far more of a physical competitive sport than just cheering for your schools team on the sidelines. Pro teams often just employ women, but college squads in particular are often mixed with men and women and the routines just keep getting more and more complex requiring tough gymnastics moves and throws. It's come a long way from having men only yelling into a cone something like "go team go".

A model poses in Paris, France in 1922. Such risqué pictures were very prevalent especially in France. Often you could see similar pictures on postcards.

American soldiers burn part of a village as well as their victims of the My Lai Massacre in South Vietnam in 1968. The soldiers spent hours raping and murdering up to 500 unarmed civilians. This event was what many considered as the worst event of the Vietnam War, and one of the worst events ever committed by American military personnel. It took over 4 hours for the few soldiers against the carnage to get command to take control of the situation and stop the massacre. A US photographer was there, taking pictures of the bodies and victims of the mass killings. Women were gang raped, then shot and mutilated. It was beyond ugly.

Continuing on from the previous picture, a small boy shields his younger brother from the horrible events of the My Lai Massacre in 1968. Extremely young children such as the 2 pictured were also murdered and in some cases also mutilated. The US soldiers had all the time in the world to commit these atrocities, as it lasted over 4 hours. The photographer himself protected these 2 children, but their mother and grandmother were victims of the massacre. Only 3 servicemen tried to protect civilians and stop the massacre, out of hundreds. When they tried to expose the massacre, they were disciplined and ostracized. Eventually, it all came out, and afterwards only 26 soldiers would be charged despite up to 200 involved in the incident. However, only 1 would get convicted of anything major and spend 3 and a half years in prison. That's right, for these horrific war crimes, virtually no one was punished.

The Canadian Rockies, 1993.

If 1993 isn't historical, strictly in reference to time and not events, what is the criteria for a year to be historical? 20, 25, 50+ years?

Photochrom* of the Great Bath at the Roman Baths in Bath, England. Created between 1890 and 1905.

Edit: "Created", references the time/date the picture was taken/processed via Photochrom (a process for producing colorized images from black-and-white photographic negatives via the direct photographic transfer of a negative onto lithographic printing plates), and not the date the Baths were created. Hope that clears up any confusion.
