Francis Scott Key was a gifted amateur poet.
Inspired by the sight of the American flag flying over Fort McHenry the morning after the bombardment, he scribbled the initial verse of his song on the back of a letter.
Back in Baltimore, he completed the four verses and copied them onto a sheet of paper, probably making more than one copy.
A local printer issued the new song as a broadside. Shortly afterward, two Baltimore newspapers published it, and by mid-October it had appeared in at least seventeen other papers in cities up and down the East Coast.
The Star-Spangled Banner:
O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight O’er the ramparts we watch’d were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there, O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream, ’Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion A home and a Country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash’d out their foul footstep’s pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation! Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto - “In God is our trust,” And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

My g'ma sent it to me, tonight. The message with it was; remember the game, the talk, your grandpa.
g'pa and g'ma took me and Michael to the huge stadium to see a baseball game, our first time, and the star-spangled was played. Michael and I sat there until we were pulled up and told to stand in respect, I had no idea of the song etc. G'pa told us we'd have a talk when we returned home about the flag the song but now was time to have fun.
When home we were to shower and after g'ma had made us toast and we sat at the table then g'pa entered took his chair and said now we'll have our talk.
He told us the story much like above. he told us (the short version) the anthem and flag represented courage, sacrifice, survival, strength, the bravery the endurance of it's military it's the symbol of the courage and strength of the American people.
I said its the Armys flag and then Michael butted in saying no it's the flag of the marines.
G'pa said no, you boys are not listening, let's go over this again and we did. He told the story much as the above story and simplified it lol bottom line; The flag represents the American people, our strength and pride, the flag is not of the government nor the military but its people as a whole.
Well, I recall almost all of the conversation, the story, his view. It was a rare occasion that g'pa had a serious conversation with us. He did well, he was Canadian ..
