‘The View’ Hosts Celebrate Trump Receiving Letter From DOJ in Jan. 6 Probe
Martin Walsh, July 18, 2023
Former President Donald Trump announced on social media that he received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith stating that he is the target of a January 6 grand jury investigation.
“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
During an episode of ABC’s “The View,” the hosts gleefully celebrated the news. Co-host Whoopi Goldberg was particularly vocal in saying that Trump deserved to be “behind bars.”
“What’s bothering more about all of this, you know, the young person that the — the young man they got for espionage recently, do you know that he’s demanding to be treated exactly the same way as Trump was? He wants to be — yes, he wants to be able to go home and do everything. And that’s the thing for me that is most egregious. Nobody goes home,” Goldberg said.
“Nobody is above the law. You should actually be in the building that has the bars on it. Both of you, you know? (Applause) Because you’re — you took — you took documents and gave them to other people. They don’t let folks walk around, but suddenly now, we have that exception to the rule, and this is the dangerous part of all. There should be no exceptions to this rule,” she declared.
Below is a partial transcript of the rest of the conversation:
Goldberg: “So, there is breaking news. We just learned that you-know-who has received a letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith notifying him that he’s a target in the DoJ’s grand jury probe of efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Lawmakers are reacting. Let’s see the clip.”
[Clip starts]
HOYER: “Former President Trump has done repeatedly things that call upon law enforcement at every level to look at what he’s done because so much of it is certainly questionable at best and illegal at worst.”
(…)
Goldman: “This appears to be the culmination of it, and I expect Donald Trump to be indicted in the near future.”
[Clip ends]
BEHAR: “Again. Again.
(Applause)
Goldberg: “I mean, you can clap, yeah, sure. It’s almost like a weekly TV show.”
BEHAR: “Yeah, indictment du jour.”
Goldberg: “Indicted du jour. We don’t have all the specifics yet, so what is your — “
BEHAR: “Well, one of the things is he’s not going to show up at the grand jury because he’s incapable of not lying. He can’t not lie. So they never put him on the stand. You know, we’ve seen a lot of ‘Law & Orders’ where they would say, ‘I would never put my client on the stand because he will perjure himself.’ That’s one thing. The other thing that struck me was funny, he wrote in his post on his TRUTH Social thing, ‘On Sunday night, while I was with my family, deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DoJ, sent a letter — again, it was Sunday night! — stating that I am a target of the January 6th grand jury investigation.’ He was so upset that it was Sunday night while he’s home reading his upside-down Bible. (Laughter) They’re busy bothering him on a Sunday night. How dare they? He’s so religious. He’s so — oh, it’s pathetic.”
HOSTIN: “I hadn’t read that. You know, what I will say, we don’t know what the charges are going to be. We know that the last indictment led to 37 counts and that was just a documents case, which is a really easy case to prove. But the worst thing for a defendant or a prospective defendant is to get that target letter. You either want to cooperate or you want to be — you know, turn state’s evidence and testify in front of the grand jury, or you’re the target, and so at this point, because he’s the target, the likelihood of indictment is about 100%. And I just — yeah, I heard a little clapping over there.
(Applause)
And I only know this because I’ve sent these target letters.”
“A target letter from federal prosecutors to Trump makes clear that prosecutors are focused on Trump’s actions in the investigation into overturning the 2020 election – and not just of those around him who tried to stop his election loss,” CNN reported.
“Justice Department regulations allow for prosecutors to notify subjects of an investigation that they have become a target. Often a notification that a person is a target is a strong sign an indictment could follow, but it is possible the recipient is not ultimately charged. Those notifications aren’t required, but prosecutors have the discretion to notify subjects that they have become a target. Once informed, a target has the opportunity to present evidence or testify to the grand jury if they choose,” the outlet added.
Trump said he received the letter on Sunday and that he expects to face both an arrest and an indictment.
Smith is also going after Trump over his handling of classified documents that were located at Mar-a-Lago last year.
