Atlanta activist spent $200G in Black Lives Matter donations on house, personal expenses: FBI
Sir Maejor Page, 32, is facing fraud and money laundering charges
By Robert Gearty | Fox News

The FBI has arrested the founder of a Black Lives Matter group in Atlanta on fraud and money laundering charges.

Sir Maejor Page, 32, was accused Friday of misappropriating $200,000 in donations he solicited through Facebook on behalf of Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta, Fox 5 Atlanta reported Friday.

Page was arrested in Toledo and released on bond after appearing before a judge via video. He did not immediately return messages Saturday from Fox News.

The Toledo FBI office opened an investigation last year after a cooperating witness submitted a fraud complaint against Page, whose real name is Tyree Conyers-Page, FBI agent Matthew Desorbo said in the complaint.

Page founded Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta in 2016 and this year took in more than $466,000 in donations in June, July and August, Desorbo said.

"In sum, Page has spent over $200,000 on personal items generated from
donations received through BLMGA Facebook page with no identifiable purchase or expenditure
for social or racial justice," he said.

The FBI in Toledo said Page pledged to use those donations "for George Floyd" but instead used the money make purchases related to food, dining, entertainment, clothing, furniture, a home security system, tailored suits and accessories.

According to the bureau, Page also used $112,000 of the donated money to purchase a house for himself in Toledo, Ohio. The transaction took place last month.

Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta could not solicit donations after losing its tax-exempt status as a charity in 2019 for failing to submit to the IRS 990 tax returns listing donations and expenditures.

Fox 5 reported in 2016 that Page became a familiar face at Black Lives Matter marches in Atlanta to protest fatal police shootings.

He was part of a group of Black activists who met with then-Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed to demand changes in police training and tactics. Page even spoke at a joint news conference, according to the station.

At the time, Page had been arrested several times for impersonating a police officer, the station reported..

According to the station, months earlier Page had parted ways with the Black Lives Matter of Atlanta movement before forming Black Lives Matter of Greater Atlanta.

President Donald Trump fueled the far right extremist, neo-fascist,
violence-promoting hate group “Proud Boys” during Tuesday night’s debate
when he refused to condemn white supremacism.

Trump gave the group a direct order:
“Proud Boys, stand back and stand by,”

Experts say Trump’s remarks effectively made him their leader,
an “honor” the Proud Boys are only too happy to have.

Immediately the group took Trump’s words
and incorporated them into their logo.

Now that logo, the logo of a dangerous hate group –
including Trump’s directive –
is appearing on merchandise at Amazon.

A quasi-new militia movement called the boogaloo was born out of internet forums for pro-gun/anti-government enthusiasts over the summer of 2019 when white supremacists adopted the term.

Earlier this year in January, the boogaloo movement gained traction off the internet and into the streets – with gun-toting rural enthusiasts coining the term for a civil war second-coming, of sorts, using phrases like “big luau” as a deterrent and Hawaiian-style shirts as an identification marker for incoming traffic.

The recent boogaloo kidnapping plot against Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) was just the tip of the iceberg.
And never has a U.S. president taken part in the extremism circling this underground organized group.

Raw Story reported Thursday that police and private intelligence predicted “coming violence” from right-wing vigilantes at polling places in battleground states.

President Donald J. Trump shook it up and, arguably, encouraged the acts of violence with his “stand back and stand by” directives during the first presidential debate a week prior.

“What we are seeing include calls for civil war, race-based conflict, and for increased acquisition of weapons,” said FBI former counterintelligence director Frank Figliuzzi, speaking at an October 2 briefing by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law on voter intimidation threats and responses.

“Right-wing extremist groups, including QAnon, Proud Boys, Boogaloo Boys and violent militia groups, are all using the language of violent conflict in both their public and in their private communications online.”

Figliuzzi added, “They are also calling for a physical response and presence at the polling places.
The specter of people who are violent in nature and have violent agendas, and often come armed with long guns, is becoming a very real possibility.”

Antifa / Proud Boys / BLM - Page 6 Empty
PostSubject: FBI; Antifa Is Not a Group Or An Organization   Antifa / Proud Boys / BLM - Page 6 EmptyWed Oct 21, 2020 1:02 am

Most arrested in protests are not associated with antifa.

Antifa may be a focus on the right, but it's hard to find in the court system.

Why it matters:
Very few of the people charged in this summer's protests and riots are affiliated with highly organized extremist groups, reports AP.
Antifa is not a group or an organization.
It’s a movement or an ideology.

In thousands of pages of court documents reviewed by AP, the only apparent mention of antifa is in a Boston case in which authorities said an FBI Gang Task Force member was investigating “suspected ANTIFA activity associated with the protests” when a man fired at him and other officers.

Authorities have not claimed that the man accused of firing the shots is a member of antifa,
the umbrella term for leftist militant groups.

The big picture:
More than $1 billion in damage was estimated after the uprisings following the death of George Floyd, as Axios' Jennifer A. Kingson reported last month.

That property damage was accompanied by violence, including wounded police officers, looting and arson.

But many of those charged had no previous run-ins with the law and no apparent ties to antifa, AP notes.

Between the lines:
Many of those charged are young people from the suburbs.

By the numbers:
More than 40% of those facing federal charges are white, AP reports. At least a third are Black, and about 6% Hispanic.

Most are men.
More than 2/3 are under 30.
More than 1/4 have been charged with arson, which if convicted means a five-year minimum prison sentence.

More than a dozen are accused of civil disorder, and others are charged with burglary and failing to comply with a federal order.

The bottom line:
FBI Director Christopher Wray told Congress earlier this year that antifa is a "real thing," but it's hard to track because it's -
"not a group or an organization.
It’s a movement or an ideology."

The FBI this week arrested Ivan Harrison Hunter of San Antonio for traveling to Minnesota in late May and engaging in violence about which he later boasted on Facebook.

Hunter, according to the affidavit filed Monday, was also in contact with another Boogaloo Boi—Steven Carrillo, the California man who murdered a federal officer at an Oakland protest and a sheriff’s deputy five days later—and the two bragged to each other about their respective violent acts.

Moreover, the two men had formed a so-called “fire team”—an action squad designed to respond with violence in the event of police attempting to take people’s guns away.
They named it the “Happy Friends Group.”

Though Hunter had sworn he would “go down shooting,” FBI agents arrested him this week in San Antonio without incident, and he made his first court appearance Thursday.

The affidavit says that Hunter traveled from Texas to Minneapolis on May 27 at the behest of other Boogaloo activists in the state, who put out a national call for help on Facebook.

Hunter was in contact with another Boogaloo Boi, Ryan Teeter of North Carolina, who also traveled from his home state to Minnesota.
That day, Teeter posted to Facebook:
"Lock and load boys. Boog flags are in the air, and the national network is going off."

The FBI says that on the evening of May 28, Hunter fired off multiple rounds from a rifle resembling an AK-47, then ran away shouting: “Justice for Floyd!”

Ivan Hunter’s Facebook banner.
The next day, he boasted on Facebook that he had participated in setting the building on fire.

“I helped the community burn down that police station,” he wrote, later adding:
“I didn’t’ protest peacefully Dude ...
Want something to change? Start risking felonies for what is good.”

“The BLM protesters in Minneapolis loved me [sic] fireteam and I,” he wrote on June 11.

He and Carrillo exchanged texts on May 28, two hours after the police station had been set on fire—and mere hours after Carrillo had shot two federal protection officers at the scene of a Black Lives Matter protest in Oakland, killing one of them.

“Boog,” Hunter texted Carrillo, an apparent call for action.

“Did,” Carrillo answered.

“Luv,” Hunter replied.

“Currently in hide mode,” Carrillo said.

“Target police stations,” Hunter answered.

“I did better lol,” Carrillo texted back. Hunter later hit Carrillo up for money because he planned to “be in the woods for a bit.” Carrillo sent him $200.

Hunter seemingly was planning even further violence on June 4 around Floyd-inspired police brutality protests in Austin, according to the affidavit:
Austin police pulled him over in a truck with two other men, fully decked out in body armor and gear with multiple loaded semiautomatic magazines, along with three rifles and two pistols. Hunter denied owning any of the guns, which were confiscated by the police, and the men were released.

The Boogaloo movement, a relatively recent development that began online and has in the past year been manifesting itself in the real world, reflects the radical right’s longstanding fantasies about provoking a mass civil war in America that would end democratic “tyranny.”

The presence of Boogaloo elements at the police brutality protests of the past five months has been well documented (the movement is also fervently anti-police), though a number of the armed men in Hawaiian shirts have claimed that they are on the side of the Black Lives Matter protesters.

Top federal authorities—including Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr—have blamed “antifa” and “anarchists” for the protest violence.

Two days after the Minneapolis police station was set afire, Barr issued a Justice Department press release blaming the violence on the left.

“Groups of outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate and violent agenda,” Barr said. “In many places, it appears the violence is planned, organized, and driven by anarchistic and far left extremists, using Antifa-like tactics, many of whom travel from out of state to promote the violence.”

In August, Sen. Ted Cruz held a Senate hearing on supposed “antifa” violence at the protests in which he claimed that Carrillo was in fact a radical leftist—rather than the far-right libertarian he in reality is. Later that month, Vice President Mike Pence made the same deliberate mischaracterization.

The domestic terror attacks by Carrillo and Hunter are far from the only incidents of actual or planned violence by Boogaloo adherents this year. The tally includes:

Two other men involved in the Minneapolis protests, Michael Robert Solomon and Benjamin Ryan Teeter—the latter of whom traveled in conjunction with Hunter—were indicted in September for conspiring to provide material support for a foreign terrorist organization.

The men had hoped to join the forces of the “Boojihadeen” with the radical Islamists, though the man with the Middle Eastern accent with whom they shared the plans was in fact a federal informant.

The three Las Vegas-area Boogaloo Bois arrested for building Molotov cocktails as part of a larger campaign to wreak havoc around the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests over police brutality did not plan to attack BLM—
as most “Patriot” and “Proud Boy” groups have done over the past three years—but instead sought to use the BLM protests to target police officers and power infrastructure as a way of ramping up the violence around the protests.

A Texarkana, Texas, man who intended to spark the Boogaloo by ambushing police officers was caught by officers who were alerted by his attempt to livestream his planned killing spree. They went to his location and arrested him shortly thereafter.

A Boogaloo enthusiast who posted comments on Facebook about bringing his rifle to a protest against stay-at-home-orders in Denver attracted the interest of FBI agents, who upon visiting him at his home discovered a cache of homemade pipe bombs.

The man openly expressed his intent to use them to kill any federal agents who tried to invade his home.
Another Boogaloo Boi planned to livestream his ambush on police officers at an Ohio national park, but was arrested by FBI agents before he could pull off the plan.

Some Boogaloo activists have attempted to claim that the movement is “about peace” and supports Black Lives Matter and other protesters—including last week’s gathering on the steps of the Michigan state capitol in Lansing. The reality, however, always reveals itself in situations like these:

Namely, the Boogaloo movement may attract a broad range of participants with widely varying political ideologies, but the core of the movement—which eventually determines its direction and its behavior over time—is built around beliefs from the radical racist right.

On Saturday, The Arizona Republic reported that far-right paramilitary groups are circulating plans to lock down neighborhoods in the Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area in the event that President Donald Trump is re-elected, supposedly to police left-wing protesters.

“In Arizona, the head of the Prescott-area chapter of the Oath Keepers group, which recruits military and law enforcement officers, has warned residents to be prepared to protect their neighborhoods from feared extreme left-wing protesters who would be upset should President Donald Trump be re-elected,” reported Richard Ruelas. “Part of that the pro-Trump group’splan involved closing streets and assigning monitors to control access, according to a planning document shared with The Republic.”

Nor are the Oath Keepers the only group reportedly mobilizing.

LISTEN: Mark Cuban Joins The New Raw Story Podcast!
“A document prepared by Jim Arroyo of the Yavapai County Preparedness Club, and sent to The Republic by a concerned citizen, discussed the formation of neighborhood groups that would be set up to protect communities,” said the report. “‘How will you block your streets and how will you man guard posts?’ the document read. ‘You will need roving patrols, both vehicle and foot patrols. In essence, you are guarding your homes from threats, both internal and external.'”

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office reportedly told The Republic that it had not been aware of this document, and that it is unlawful for vigilante groups to block streets.

These developments come as other far-right groups around the country — some of whom have ties with, or aspirations to join, law enforcement — have been exposed in online chatrooms as openly fantasizing about fighting in a new civil war and shooting random civilians.

Four Proud Boys Members Stabbed in Brawl Near White House After Election, Reports Say
Jamie Ross, The Daily Beast • November 4, 2020

Three men and one woman who identify as members of the ultra-right-wing Proud Boys group were stabbed near the White House in the early hours after Election Day, according to multiple reports.

Police told NBC Washington that a fight broke out around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of 14th Street and New York Avenue Northwest—a few blocks from the White House campus. The four were stabbed and hospitalized, according to police, but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The victims have not been formally identified, with police only saying that they are linked to the pro-Trump right-wing group. However, the New York Post reported that one of the injured men is Proud Boys leader, Enrique Tarrio. Bevelyn Beatty, who gained notoriety after dumping paint over a Black Lives Matter mural outside Trump Tower, was also reportedly hurt.

A video posted on YouTube appears to show the start of incident as a brawl breaks out on a sidewalk. Glass can be heard smashing and, after the fight breaks up, one man can be seen bleeding profusely from his neck and a woman shouts: “They stabbed me!” The victims are then seen informing the police what happened and asking for medical assistance.

In a tweet confirming a stabbing, D.C. police said they’re on the lookout for three suspects—two men wearing black clothing, and one woman wearing what they described as “black sweatpants with white stripe, orange leggings and a dark gray coat.” Cops said the woman had a knife.

D.C. Police were on high-alert on Election Day and were filmed scrapping with protesters at Black Lives Matter Plaza on Tuesday evening as people waited for results of the 2020 presidential election. It’s not known if the stabbing had any connection to earlier demonstrations.

‘Neo-fascists’ and militia are descending upon DC to support Trump’s conspiracy theories — police worry of guns.

he Republican mass delusion that President Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election will come to Washington, DC this weekend.

“A cluster of far-right extremists including neo-fascists, white nationalists and militia members are expected to descend on Washington D.C. Saturday, amidst President Trump’s refusal to accept his loss to Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election,” the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which monitors hate groups, reported Thursday.

“Far-right turnout could be significant. Pro-Trump protesters have already arrived in the thousands at so-called Stop the Steal events, even those staged in smaller cities like Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Pro-Trump figures have been promoting the D.C. event for over a week. The Saturday event also coincides with Trump and his allies espousing increasingly anti-democratic views about his loss,” SPLC reported. “The D.C. protest appears to have three titles, all of which appear to represent the same protest:
‘Million MAGA march,’ a name bastardizing Louis Farrakhan’s 1995 Million Man March in Washington; ‘Stop the Steal;’ and ‘March for Trump.'”

“Street brawlers are also expected to attend. Members of the violent neo-fascist group the Proud Boys published a virtual flyer on the right-wing social media website Parler on Tuesday, urging members to attend. Trump infamously suggested that The Proud Boys “stand back and stand by” during a contentious televised debate with Biden held at the end of September,” SPLC noted.

DC police are worried about people bring firearms to the rallies.

DC Police Chief Peter Newsham was interviewed by Shomari Stone of NBC DC.

Oregon Gave an Antifa Support Group Your CARES Act COVID Relief Tax Dollars During Riots
By Nick Arama | Dec 05, 2020 10:30 AM ET

Our friends over at PJ Media have an exclusive that’s more than a little infuriating.

You may be living in a state with lockdowns that have made it difficult to go to work. Your job and your livelihood may be impacted. You may be wondering how you can keep it all together.

But never fear. While you may be trying to figure out how you’re going to make it, Oregon is giving those big virus relief bucks from your tax dollars to an Antifa support group.

According to PJ Media, SNACK BLOC, the group that has provided support to “protesters” during Portland’s 100 plus days of BLM/Antifa rioting, looting, and burning, got a ton of money. Their Twitter account just seemed to start in June. In September, Snack Bloc indicated they were at the home of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (when it was protested and attacked). “You know you’re the fu–ing mayor, right? Like we’re at your building because we want YOU to stop the police officers from ‘repeatedly striking’ individuals.”

Willamette Week says the group has existed for three years but became a 501(C)(3) organization in June. The paper called them a “protest support and mutual aid group…that’s provided resources for almost 100 days of protests across Portland.”

Along with organizing its own events, Snack Bloc has been at seemingly every protest, march and vigil around the city over the past three months, providing snacks, water and supplies to protesters at the Stripper Strike, BLM Art Therapy and rallies across Portland.

The group even put out a video you can see here for Ted Wheeler’s birthday calling to “Defund, Dismantle, and BURN IT DOWN. ✊🏾 Resources for the REVOLUTION.”

The group hasn’t tweeted since September, although they’re still getting money on Venmo. But hey they got their relief money, right?

Exactly how much relief money did this group get?

The Oregon Health Authority gave them a grant award of $145,000 from the $45 million that the state got in federally-funded CARES Act money, according to PJ Media. From all of our tax dollars. Is it possible that Oregon was unaware of what the group did? Nope. They were fully aware, that’s part of the reason they gave them the money.

When the awards were made in September, the head of the OHA said they were fully aware of the group’s receiving the money and noted how “vital” they are to “their communities” for the “collective work” to end racism, “especially relating to COVID-19.”

“We look forward to partnering with these remarkable organizations and communities, who do such vital work to serve their communities,” said Patrick Allen, OHA director. “We are deeply aware how these organizations’ linkages and knowledge of their communities and the challenges they face are so important to bringing resources to help. We look forward to the collective work to continue to meaningfully address the systemic racism and structural inequities that have caused so much health disparity, especially relating to COVID-19.”

Patrick Allen claimed that the money would go to groups “disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.”

The grants focus resources on communities most disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and programs that will address health and economic disruptions, food insecurity and housing, and safety and violence prevention, among other aspects of need.

Safety and violence prevention? Are they kidding? Could you think of anything that would less fit into those parameters?

Proud Boys and Antifa clash as Trump supporters protest election result in Washington
Our Foreign Staff | The Telegraph
Sat, December 12, 2020, 9:00 PM MST

Conservative groups claiming without evidence that the Nov. 3 election was stolen from President Donald Trump staged protests across the country on Saturday, with one in Washington turning violent at times as police broke up sporadic clashes after dark.

Organisers of Stop The Steal, linked to pro-Trump operative Roger Stone, and church groups urged supporters to participate in "Jericho Marches" and prayer rallies.

But groups of pro-Trump "Proud Boys" protesters and "Antifa" counterprotesters brawled in downtown Washington on Saturday night. Police moved in quickly to separate them, using pepper spray on members of both sides, Reuters witnesses said.

Around 200 members of the Proud Boys, a violent far-right group, had joined the marches earlier on Saturday near the Trump hotel. Many wore combat fatigues, black and yellow shirts and ballistic vests, carried helmets and flashed hand signals used by white nationalists.

Earlier, police in riot gear and on bicycles kept the opposing demonstrators apart by blocking streets. After dark fell, the protesters - including members of the aggressive far-left anti-facism movement - splintered into smaller groups to roam the streets in search of their rivals.

Protests were also held in other communities around the country, including Atlanta, Georgia, another state where Trump's campaign has sought to overturn Joe Biden's election victory, and Mobile, Alabama, according to local news coverage.

Local media in the Washington state capital of Olympia reported that one person was shot and three arrested after clashes between pro- and anti-Trump protest groups.

Trump's supporters carrying his campaign flags and signs marched between the Supreme Court, the Capitol and downtown Washington, which was closed to traffic by police vehicles and dump trucks.

Few of the marchers wore masks, despite soaring Covid-19 deaths and cases, defying a mayoral directive for them to be worn outside. Several thousand people rallied in Washington, fewer than during a similar protest last month.

As some in the crowd echoed far right conspiracy theories about the election, a truck-pulled trailer flew Trump 2020 flags and a sign reading "Trump Unity" while blaring the country song "God Bless the U.S.A".

"It's clear the election has been stolen," said Mark Paul Jones of Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania, who sported a tricorner Revolutionary War hat as he walked toward the Supreme Court with his wife.

Mr Trump "is being railroaded out of office," he said, adding that Mr Biden won with the complicity of the Supreme Court, FBI, Department of Justice and CIA. The Supreme Court "didn't even take the time to hear the case," Mr Jones said.

Eddy Miller of Philadelphia, who was selling Trump campaign T-shirts, said he was sure "there was fraud despite what I see on the news" about court rulings striking down fraud allegations.

4 People Were Stabbed and 1 Was Shot During Saturday's Pro-Trump Rallies

With anger in their hearts and dangerous falsehoods clouding their judgement, thousands of protestors took to the streets of Washington D.C. and small towns across the country on Saturday to protest a Supreme Court decision that significantly narrowed outgoing president Trump’s chances of invalidating the results of the 2020 presidential election. Fresh off a presidential pardon, former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn showed up to placate an angry audience. “We decide the election,” he said. “We’re waging a battle across America.” Later on, he marched alongside InfoWars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

The Washington Post described Saturday’s rallies as a “falsehood-filled spectacle.” The events were surreal—a physical manifestation of the disinformation that has plagued the modern media ecosystem. Then they got violent.

Later in the afternoon, members of the Proud Boys violently clashed with counterprotestors. Videos on social media show individuals dressed in the Proud Boys’ signature yellow and black Fred Perry shirts lunging at a counterprotestor before being wrestled to the ground by the police. Four people were stabbed near Harry’s Bar at 11th Street and F Street Northwest. The location was a meet-up spot for the Proud Boys.

A spokesperson for Mayor Bowser said that the four individuals were in critical condition. Eight police officers were also injured and taken to hospitals. It remains unclear with which groups the victims are associated. On Sunday, the Associated Press reported that at least one suspect, Phillip Johnson, 29, had been arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. According to a police report obtained by the AP, at least one of the stabbing victims identified Johnson as the assailant.

By the end of the night, 30 people had been arrested and charged with various misdemeanors including assault and rioting.

3,000 miles away, a similar scene unfolded in Olympia, Washington, with Trump supporters and counterprotestors once again clashing in the streets. People from both groups threw punches and objects at each other. At one point, a shot was fired, striking a counterpotestor. A video of the immediate aftermath of the event shows two men, one in a “Make America Great Again” hat running across a parking lot and getting into a car as counterprotestors scream, “Somebody get him! He just shot somebody!” in the background.

Authorities from the Washington State Patrol later identified the alleged shooter as a 25-year-old from Shoreline, Washington, but declined to reveal his name. He remains in custody. Little is known about the victim. According to the New York Times, he is still hospitalized but refuses to speak to authorities. At a press conference concerning the Covid-19 vaccine distribution, Governor Jay Inslee (D) called the violence “maddening.”

So this is what it has come to; all because the outgoing president refuses to concede an election he lost handily. On Sunday, Trump continued his assault on democracy by posting more baseless claims about election fraud. Despite knowing that his words actively incite violence, he rages on. It’s not surprising, but it is despicable.

Proud Boys and Black Lives Matter supporters clash at Utah rally
Enrique Limón
Sun, January 17, 2021, 10:41 PM

As pro-Trump extremists, which President-elect Joe Biden later would label “domestic terrorists”, laid siege to the Capitol building on Wednesday, similar “Save America” gatherings erupted across several US cities, from Atlanta, GA, to Topeka, KS — albeit on a less grand scale. Some 2,000 miles away from DC, Utah’s sleepy capital city — which as of late only pierces the national dialogue bubble when Mitt Romney or Real Housewives-related news ensues — also bore witness to a rally of its own.

Atop Salt Lake City’s Capitol Hill, approximately 400 people, some heavily armed, descended upon the Utah statehouse. There, speakers led the horde in chants and several prayers that urged a higher power to intervene in stopping Congress’ electoral count to confirm Biden's victory. “We recognize that storm clouds have gathered around us. We recognize that patriots are gathered in this city and throughout the country,” a kneeling man behind the mic said. “This is a battle...” he continued, “[and] though it is easy for us to feel anger, it’s easy for us to feel violence, help us to have an outpouring of love that lets us go forth without fear.”

During its first couple of hours, the gathering was a mostly peaceful affair. That was until Rick Egan, a photographer with local daily The Salt Lake Tribune, was harassed and pepper-sprayed, an exchange that Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall called an “attack on freedom of press and democracy” on Twitter; one that “should not be allowed to go unchecked.”

The incident happened when protest attendees took issue with Egan’s documenting presence. “Look at you in your fucking mask, you pussyy,” one protester told him, according to the paper.

“Journalism is enshrined in the First Amendment of our country’s Constitution. And today on the lawn of Utah’s Capitol it was tossed aside,” Tribune executive editor, Lauren Gustus, wrote.

Even after the fracas, the rally went on uninterrupted, with members of the Proud Boys, as well as the locally bred Utah Citizen’s Alarm, gathered around its periphery, some chanting “All lives matter!” to a group of four Black Lives Matter supporters as a handful of state troopers looked on. At one point, one rally-goer accompanied by his black German Shepherd began shouting, “Black dogs’ lives matter” at the group, while another sarcastically sang “Kumbaya.”

Minutes later, as Black Lives Matter supporters made their way closer to the Capitol building, one Proud Boy ripped away their signature flag, ripping it apart while tossing its metal pole to the side.

“We’re better than this,” a woman trying to temper the altercation kept repeating.

Amid the chaos, a lone rally opponent, Ashlyn Tolman, stood in silence, holding a sign emblazoned with the message: “Trump lost. Accept the confirmed results, not conspiracy.”

“I just think it’s important to... stand for, like, the side that you believe in—especially when it’s not very represented,” the 17-year-old said, after a pair of middle-aged women interrupted our initial interview. “You’re more patriotic than Biden,” one of the hecklers said. “I’m not for what you’re saying, but… you’ve got more balls than Biden, I’ll tell you that right now.”

Asked if she was concerned for her safety, Tolman shrugged. “I’m not too worried,” she said. “People just kind of say things, I don’t know, against me but I don’t think anyone’s... inciting violence or anything,” she said.

“So I think I’m OK—hopefully,” Tolman finalized, crossing her fingers.

Proud Boys: Canada labels far-right group a terrorist entity
Published2 hours ago

Canada says the Proud Boys are a "neo-fascist organisation"

Canada has designated the far-right group Proud Boys as a terrorist entity.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said the decision was influenced by the group's "pivotal role" in the 6 January riots at the Capitol in Washington, DC.

The designation allows the Proud Boys' assets to be frozen, and members of the groups could be charged with terrorist offences if they commit violent acts.

The group is all-male and anti-immigrant, and has a history of violent political confrontations.

It was founded in 2016 by Gavin McInnes, the Canadian co-founder of Vice Media. Vice has since worked to distance itself from Mr McInnes and the Proud Boys

Who are Proud Boys and antifa?

The Proud Boys' platform includes ideas espoused by former US President Donald Trump, libertarianism and traditional gender roles.

The group was mentioned by Mr Trump during the first US presidential debate last October.

Responding to a question about white supremacist and militia groups, he said, "Proud Boys - stand back and stand by", which members of the group online took as a call to prepare for action. Mr Trump later distanced himself from them.

The announcement in Canada comes one week after the US Department of Homeland Security warned of a "heightened threat" of domestic terrorism from violent extremists unhappy with the outcome of the presidential election.

And just hours after the announcement, the US Justice Department announced it had arrested and charged a top member of the group's Seattle chapter. Ethan Nordean, 30, who is also known as Rufio Panman, is at least the eighth group member to be charged in connection with the Capitol riots.

In Canada on Wednesday, Mr Blair described a "growing threat of ideologically motivated violent extremism". He did not specify how many Proud Boy chapters are currently in Canada.

The Canadian Proud Boy groups had previously been thought of as disparate and disorganised, but the new designation suggests their perceived threat has been elevated.

The decision was made based on "a trove of new information", Mr Blair said. "Over the past several months, basically since 2018, we have seen an escalation towards violence for this group [the Proud Boys]."

The escalation has continued since the US presidential election, he added.

In his announcement, Mr Blair referenced "several different occasions" of attacks in Canada from those with far-right and extremist ideologies. Last week, the country marked the four-year anniversary of a mass shooting in a Quebec mosque that killed six people and injured 19.

Despite strict travel restrictions between the US and Canada, at least two Canadians later identified in media reports made it to Washington for last month's storming of the Capitol. And images and video of the 6 January riots show at least one Canadian flag held by someone in the crowd.

Canada is the first country to give the Proud Boys a terrorist designation.

Two other far-right US groups - Atomwaffen Division and the Base - have also been designated by Canada as terrorist entities, along with several affiliates of the Islamic State group and al-Qaeda.

A total of six white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups have been designated by terrorist entities in Canada. Prior to 2018, no such groups were listed as a terrorist threat.
