Bernie Sanders hires illegal immigrant to be press secretary
by Joseph Simonson | The Washington Examiner | February 28, 2019 05:30 PM

Sen. Bernie Sanders' new deputy national press secretary likely won't be eligible to vote in the 2020 election due to what she says is her status as an undocumented immigrant.

The hiring of Belen Sisa, an Arizona leftist activist, was announced Wednesday evening. Sisa, who says she was brought to this country illegally from Argentina by her parents at age six, is currently protected from deportation under President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program.

Despite her immigration status, Sisa has remained active in liberal politics over the years. In 2016, she worked as a page to the Arizona delegation at the Democratic National Convention and in Latino outreach for Sanders' 2016 campaign.

"For someone who was so scared of participating in anything, and coming out and doing this, it’s pretty hard to believe I’m standing in the middle of it all,” she said at the time.

Sisa soon lost her fear of participation. She has been arrested at least twice for protests throughout her activist career. As a college senior in 2017, she was jailed for her role in a sit-in outside of Sen. Chuck Schumer's, D-N.Y., office. While in jail, Sisa told reporters that she organized a "prison strike."

Just weeks before that, she was arrested for a protest outside the Senate Hart Office Building. Both protests were over immigration reform and a demand that Congress pass the DREAM Act — a bill that would permanently legalize children who were brought into the country illegally — "cleanly," without extraneous provisions.

"She's so brave," Sisa's mother said at the time. "DACA is expiring every day. Hers is going to expire in one year and what are we going to do with all of these youth? Congress has to pass the DREAM Act.

Sanders Still Won’t Call Maduro a Dictator: ‘There Are Still Democratic Operations’ in Venezuela
BY: Cameron Cawthorne
February 25, 2019 11:00 pm

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) continued his streak of not calling Venezuelan autocratic leader Nicolas Maduro a dictator, saying Monday that there are still "democratic operations" in Venezuela.

Sanders, who announced last week he's running for president, participated in a CNN town hall in Washington, D.C., with host Wolf Blitzer. The CNN host asked him why he stopped short of calling Maduro a dictator in an interview with Univision's Jorge Ramos last week.

"Well, I think it's fair to say that the last election was undemocratic, but there are still democratic operations taking place in that country. The point is what I'm calling for right now is internationally supervised, free elections," Sanders said.

Shortly before the town hall, Univision announced on Twitter that Ramos and the team working with him were "being arbitrarily detained at the Miraflores Palace in Caracas. They were interviewing [Maduro] but he didn't like the questions. Their technical equipment was also confiscated."

https://twitter.com/UnivisionNews/status/1100193338634964993

Univision later reported that Ramos and the team were released.

Sanders, who caucuses with the Senate Democrats, went on to attack President Donald Trump for being "selective" when it comes to his concerns about democracy before adding that his "record is to be concerned about democracy all over the world."

"At the end of the day, it's going to be the people of Venezuela who determine the future of their country, not the United States," Sanders said.

Rep. Donna Shalala (D., Fla.), Sen. Ben Cardin (D., Md.), and other Democrats have come out against Sanders for refraining from calling for Maduro to step down or saying whether he thinks Maduro is a dictator.

Sanders "has demonstrated again that he does not understand this situation," Shalala told Politico, adding, "I absolutely disagree with his imprecision in not saying Maduro must go."

Cardin appeared on CNN's "Right Now" on Friday, where host Brianna Keilar asked him about Sanders's interview with Univision.

"I disagree with Senator Sanders in regards to the legitimacy of President Maduro. I don't believe he is a legitimate leader," Cardin said. "I do agree with Senator Sanders that we need free and fair elections in Venezuela in order to determine its future leader. That has to be done."

His speech promised a presidency that would "bring people together".

He outlined numerous policies and attacked greed and the "billionaire class". As president, he said he would:

Enact a "federal jobs guarantee" to ensure all Americans have work

More than double the minimum wage from $7.25 (£5.50) to $15

Pass "comprehensive" immigration reform, including allowing hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants to stay in the US

Make universities and colleges tuition-free

Reform healthcare to give universal coverage

He promised to fight for "economic justice, social justice, racial justice and environmental justice".

MARCH 19, 2019 / 1:22 PM / UPDATED 15 MINUTES AGO
Bernie Sanders hires Beto O'Rourke critic as top aide in 2020 race
James Oliphant

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders on Tuesday said he is hiring a well-known liberal journalist with a history of sharply criticizing other Democratic presidential candidates, including Beto O’Rourke.

Sanders’ campaign said it is bringing in David Sirota, whose work has appeared in The Guardian and Newsweek, among other outlets, as a senior adviser and speechwriter.

The move could stoke tensions within the Democratic field since Sirota has previously targeted O’Rourke, the former U.S. congressman from Texas who entered the presidential race last week, and other rivals.

Sirota on Twitter and in published articles has accused O’Rourke of siding with President Donald Trump and Republicans while a member of the House of Representatives, as well as being overly friendly with the oil and gas industry.

Sirota’s criticism of O’Rourke in December drew a warning from Neera Tanden, a top ally of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and president of the Center for American Progress, a Democratic think tank.

“A supporter of Bernie Sanders attacking a Democrat,” Tanden tweeted. “This is seriously dangerous. We know Trump is in the White House and attacking Dems is doing Trump’s bidding.”

The conflict was a reminder of the bad blood between the Clinton and Sanders camps when the two battled for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and the mistrust between the party’s moderate and progressive wings.

Sirota also has slammed presidential candidates Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand and Kamala Harris, as well as former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, for being overly cozy with corporate interests.

Asked for comment, Sanders campaign spokeswoman Sarah Ford cited a HuffPost story last month about an email Sanders sent to campaign surrogates, asking them to “engage respectfully with our Democratic opponents ― talking about the issues we are fighting for, not about personalities or past grievances.”

Sirota worked for Sanders as a press secretary when Sanders was a member of the House of Representatives in the early 2000s.

An article Sirota wrote in 2013 for the liberal news website Salon praising the economic record of Hugo Chavez, Venezuela’s late socialist president, also attracted criticism on social media from Sanders’ Democratic Party critics and conservatives alike.

Sanders recently refused to label Venezuela’s current president, Nicolas Maduro, a dictator or recognize the opposition leader, Juan Guaido, as the country’s rightful leader - the current U.S. position.

Guaido invoked the constitution to assume the interim presidency in January, saying Maduro’s re-election was not legitimate.

O’Rourke said while campaigning in Iowa last week that he supported Guaido’s claim on Venezuela’s presidency.

Bernie Sanders and his plan to overhaul US health system
10 April 2019

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders is unveiling his vision for a national health care plan that is expected to be adopted by several other leading White House candidates. So what is it?

It's widely known that the US has the most expensive healthcare system in the world, and health outcomes vary according to your means.

President Barack Obama tried to overhaul it. But even after his landmark Affordable Care Act, some 27 million Americans remain uninsured.

His successor in the White House has tried to dismantle that legislation, making healthcare a central issue in next year's presidential election.

Senator Sanders' plan - called Medicare for All - will play a big part in the debate.

So what's in it?

Firstly, what's Medicare?

Medicare is a federally run programme that offers health insurance coverage for Americans aged 65 and older, as well as individuals with certain disabilities or medical conditions. It covers both hospital and medical costs.

The programme is broken up into different plans (called Medicare A, B, C and D) that individuals can select depending on their needs. There are additional private plans available to supplement the basic coverage.

Most still require patients to pay annual premiums as well as deductibles (what patients pay for treatment before insurers step in) and co-payments (fixed cost of a service or prescription) that are set based on rates negotiated by the government with providers. These rates can change year to year.

Many people find they need supplemental insurance coverage even with Medicare, as the programme will only pay for 80% of approved medical costs or for 60 days of hospital care.

As it stands, Medicare is not a single-payer system since private insurers can participate.

What is Sanders proposing?

Medicare for All is a proposal to expand Medicare into a single-payer health system.

That means the federal government would be the sole, nationwide insurance provider for all essential and preventative healthcare.

It is not a universal health care system where the government would own and operate hospitals - instead, the government would pay private providers an agreed upon rate for their services.

Under Senator Bernie Sanders' proposal, first introduced in 2017 and re-introduced in April, Medicare for All would expand Medicare's coverage to include vision, dental, prescription drugs, nursing home care and reproductive health services.

The 2019 update to the plan also includes a long-term care coverage for patients with disabilities - amending one of the criticisms of his earlier plan.

The change also brings Mr Sanders' plan more in line with the version of Medicare for All proposed in the House of Representatives by congresswoman Pramila Jayapal of Washington state.

In four years, Mr Sanders' plan would have the country phase out of private insurance plans so everyone would receive insurance from the federal government.

The Affordable Care Act would also end, as users would be enveloped into the national plan.

Private insurance companies and employers would be banned from selling any manner of duplicate plans for services covered under the government's programme, though plans for non-essential medical services like cosmetic surgery could remain.

Mr Sanders' proposal would see an end to the "cost sharing" that makes up the current system: No deductibles, no premiums, no co-payments for care.

The only out-of-pocket expense under Mr Sanders' plan would be for some non-generic prescription drugs, but any cost to the patient would be capped at $200 annually.

For comparison, US patients in 2016 paid over $535bn for prescription drugs, according to government estimates.

Mr Sanders' Medicare for All would see a new 6.2% tax paid by employers on all wages; estate tax reforms; more taxes on the wealthy; and a 2.2% income tax on personal income with no credits allowed.

Ms Jayapal's plan mostly tracks with Mr Sanders', but also includes provisions to roll out the programme in two years instead of four, offer no out-of-pocket costs at all for prescriptions, and grant the government the ability to issue generic prescription licences to bring down costs if negotiating with companies fails.

Will it succeed?

In 2016, Bernie Sanders put universal healthcare on the map as a Democratic policy objective, even as Hillary Clinton scoffed that it was an unpractical and unachievable goal.

Now Mr Sanders is no longer a lone voice in the party.

Within the burgeoning field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, however, there are variations on the scope and speed of reform. Some would prefer to add a government-run option within the existing system. Others want to put private insurers out of business.

On Wednesday, Mr Sanders made clear once again he's in the latter camp. The plan the Vermont senator proposes would be more generous than government-run systems in other countries. That may appeal to voters - at least until the price tag is discussed.

Then expect some Democrats to again say enacting such a programme is unrealistic in the extreme. When it comes to healthcare, many Americans are fearful of disruptive change. The current system may be flawed, but its flaws are known.

Mr Sanders, who preaches "political revolution", doesn't do small and incremental, however. He's again cutting a path to the party's left. Can he again convince others to follow?

What are the arguments for Medicare for All?

Everyone is covered

With millions still uninsured - and forgoing care because they cannot afford treatments - Medicare for All would ensure healthcare is a right for all Americans.

Affordability

The government's bargaining power would drive down healthcare costs, supporters say, pointing out that government health programmes like veterans' health already receive 50% in discounts on prescriptions.

And unlike the current system, where deductibles can be as high as $10,000 for patients before their insurance plans even kick in, Medicare for All would guarantee everyone could afford any care visits and prescriptions.

System consolidation

Medicare for All would remove health insurance responsibilities from employers and states as private insurance and Medicaid would be rolled into the federal plan.

Providers would not need to navigate a labyrinthine system to file reimbursement claims and it would be easier for patients to understand and use the system.

Reducing healthcare spending

Bringing down rates for services and prescriptions would help lower the overall cost of the health system.

Administrative health costs could also be reduced by $400bn under Medicare for All, according to The Physicians for a National Health Program group.

Other analyses have also found that a single-payer plan would ultimately reduce total national healthcare spending. University of Amherst economist Prof Gerald Friedman estimated savings could be between $5.5tn and $12.5tn in the next decade.

One report by the Citizens for Tax Justice advocacy group found that for all but the highest-earning Americans, Mr Sanders' plan would result in an increase in post-tax income.

A study by the conservative-leaning Mercatus Center also found that Mr Sanders' plan would see a $482bn decrease in health spending and $1.5tn in administrative cost reductions, amounting to a $2tn decrease in health spending in a decade compared to current projections.

And what are the arguments against?

Taxes

A fear of higher taxes is perhaps the biggest reason for pushback against a national health programme.

Under Medicare for All, nearly all residents would see new annual taxes.

Income tax reform would make wealthier Americans pay more: An income between $250,000 to $500,000 would see a 40% tax; an income of over $10m would see a 52% tax.

But some experts worry Mr Sanders' current tax plan would not adequately finance a Medicare for All programme, and that actual taxes could end up being even higher.

Cost

Mr Sanders in 2016 estimated his plan would cost $1.38tn per year, while opponents say costs could be double that.

Medicare for All would increase government spending in a decade by anywhere from $25tn to $35tn according to US economists and think tanks.

Both Mercatus and the Urban Institute - institutions that lean conservative and liberal respectively - put 10-year costs at around $32tn.

Pay cuts all around

Private insurance companies would essentially be eliminated. In addition, with the government setting prices, both providers and pharmaceutical companies would also face profit losses.

The Mercatus study noted that for the Medicare for All plan's savings to work, providers must acquiesce to a 40% reduction in reimbursements compared to current private insurance payments.

Decrease in care quality

Tied to profit reductions, opponents say the quality of healthcare could be negatively affected if providers face deficits and disruptions, warning that hospitals could quickly go out of business.

The issue of wait times is also one many Americans are wary of given horror stories of year-long waits for surgeries from the NHS and Canada - opponents say the increased number of patients in the system may overwhelm providers already dealing with budget cuts.

No innovation

Some of those against federal intervention in the health system have cautioned that cutting payments to the health industry would stifle US innovation.

The abortion debate

Under Medicare for All, abortions would be covered by the federal insurance plan - an aspect that will certainly draw criticism from conservative groups who are already outspoken against any federal funding for the controversial procedure.

What's the public opinion?

Support for a national healthcare system has somewhat increased overall, national polls say, but the divide along political lines has deepened.

A Harvard-Politico poll in January found 68% of Americans said working on a plan like Medicare for All should be a top priority for Congress.

The nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) similarly reported six in 10 Americans are in favour of a national health system. But support for Medicare for All fluctuates based on how it's described, the March poll found.

Americans are in favour of a system that covers everyone and ends premiums and out-of-pocket payments, but the idea of higher taxes or wait times for care sees support sharply decrease.

Along party lines, 61% of Republicans polled said they strongly opposed Medicare for All, while 54% of Democrats said they strongly favoured it.

An optional Medicare for All plan that would allow people to retain their current insurance garnered more bipartisan support in the KFF poll, with 74% support overall and 47% support from Republicans.

How does the US compare to other systems?

Firstly, it's a lot more expensive in terms of cash spent.

Most government-funded health plans around the world do require individuals to pitch in, making these Medicare for All proposals more generous than anything currently in place.

Includes government and individual spending

An important distinction to make when comparing Medicare for All to systems like the NHS is that this is still not socialised care. In the US, the Veterans Health Administration, for example, operates on a socialised medical system like the NHS, with federally run hospitals.

Medicare for All would move the entire US system into a single-payer, social insurance model - very similar to Canada.

Canada's government funds universal healthcare coverage by reimbursing private providers. Provinces and territories are able to operate their own programmes with varying levels of coverage, so it is not entirely controlled by the federal government.

Under the Canadian system, patients still largely need to pay for their own dental and vision care as well as some prescriptions.

In the UK, in addition to covering the costs of care, the government owns hospitals and employs physicians. Prescriptions in hospital are free and those for outpatients are subsidised, so that patients generally only pay a minimum co-payment - usually around $12 (£9). For some groups, prescriptions are completely free, like those under 16, the elderly or full-time students up to age 18.

Bernie Sanders Town Hall's most buzzworthy moments, from taxes to abortion
By Ann W. Schmidt | Fox News

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., sat down at a Fox News town hall in Bethlehem, Pa., on Monday evening to discuss his presidential campaign.

The 77-year-old covered topics including taxes, immigration, health care and his age, which he discussed with Fox News’ Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum during the hour-long program.

Here’s a look at some of the most buzzworthy moments from the broadcast.

"I paid the taxes that I owe"

Early in the program, Sanders was asked about the 10 years worth of tax returns he had released just before the program, which showed that he had an adjusted gross income of $561,293 in 2018, on which he paid a 26 percent effective tax rate.

Baier asked Sanders why he's holding onto his wealth rather than refusing deductions or writing a check to the Treasury Department -- since Sanders had said he voted against Trump’s tax bill that he himself benefitted from.

"Pfft, come on. I paid the taxes that I owe," Sanders replied. “Why don’t you get Donald Trump up here and ask him how much he pays in taxes?”

"Hey, President Trump, my wife and I just released 10 years. Please do the same. Let the American people know," he continued, as the audience applauded.

"Follow me around the campaign trail"

As one of the oldest candidates to enter the 2020 race, Sanders admitted that asking about his age is a fair question, but said he has "continued to have my endurance."

MacCallum asked the senator what he would tell voters who say he’s “too old” to be president.

“Follow me around the campaign trail,” he quickly replied.

The senator added that his experience in government and what he believes in are really all that matter.

U.S. health care is "embarrassingly wrong"
The senator discussed health care in the U.S., which he said is “embarrassingly wrong.”

Though MacCallum questioned whether health care for all would mean higher taxes, Sanders fired back that without health insurance premiums, co-pays and deductibles, people would be saving money.

However, he did admit that “health care cannot be free,” eventually agreeing that some people would have to pay more taxes in order to pay for universal health care.

"I respect her"

Near the end of the town hall, Sanders was questioned about freshman Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who has been accused of using anti-Semitic language, even by some fellow Democrats.

Sanders, who is Jewish, said he does not think Omar is anti-Semitic, instead simply saying: “I respect her.”

“It is not anti-Semitic to be critical of a right-wing government in Israel,” he added.

"I think that happens very, very rarely"

When he was asked whether he supports abortions up to the moment of birth, Sanders responded: “I think that happens very, very rarely and I think this is being made into a political issue.”

“At the end of the day, I think the decision over abortion belongs to a woman and her physician and not the government,” Sanders added.

Bernie’s Fox in Trump’s hen house
April 19, 2019

Bernie Sanders drew big ratings and rave reviews for his Fox News town hall on Monday night. And President Trump was not pleased.

On Tuesday morning, he blasted moderator Bret Baier and the studio audience for their warm welcome of the Vermont independent senator and self-described democratic socialist — and Fox News for its hiring of former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile.

“So weird to watch Crazy Bernie on @FoxNews,” he tweeted. “Not surprisingly, @BretBaier and the ‘audience’ was so smiley and nice. Very strange, and now we have @donnabrazile?” (It’s unclear who the president meant by “we.”) Trump followed up with three more tweets about Sanders on Tuesday night.

According to Nielsen, Sanders’s town hall on Fox News drew more than 2.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched town hall of the 2020 election cycle so far. Before Monday, the most viewers for a Democratic presidential candidate came in January, when CNN drew 1.95 million viewers for its town hall with Sen. Kamala Harris.

Sanders’s appearance came after the Democratic National Committee announced that none of the party’s 2020 primary debates would be held on Fox News, which Democrats view as a mouthpiece for Trump.

But Sanders seems to have paved the way for some of his rival candidates. The Hill reported that South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg is in talks with Fox about appearing in a town hall event on the network. And according to the Daily Beast, three others — Eric Swalwell, Tim Ryan and Julián Castro — are also interested in a Fox spot.

“Looks like President Trump is scared of our campaign. He should be.”

In 1963, Bernie Sanders volunteered at Kibbutz Sha’ar HaAmakim, near Haifa in northern Israel. The kibbutz belonged to the Israeli political party Mapam, which in the 1950s had been a communist, Soviet-affiliated faction. Kibbutz members had admired Joseph Stalin until his death, and they would celebrate May Day with red flags. They spoke of controlling the means of production, taking from each according to his abilities and giving to each according to his needs.

In 1985, Bernie Sanders traveled to Managua to celebrate the rise to power of the Marxist-Leninist Sandinista government. He called it a “heroic revolution.” Undermining anti-communist US policy, Sanders denounced the Reagan administration’s backing of the Contra rebels in a letter to the Sandinistas. Bernie Sanders honeymooned with his second wife in the USSR and put up a Soviet flag in his office, shocking even the Birkenstock-wearing local liberals.

Bernie Sanders Says Abortion Will Help Fight Climate Change
Daily Caller News Foundation
SHELBY TALCOTT, REPORTER
September 04, 2019 11:51 PM ET

2020 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said he supports abortion, in part, as a way to curb human population in light of climate change.

A member of the audience asked the Vermont senator about human population growth during CNN’s climate town hall Wednesday. She specifically asked Sanders whether he would support measures to curb that growth.

The audience member added that “the planet cannot sustain this growth” and “empowering women and educating everyone” on curbing the population seems “reasonable.” Sanders said he supports women being able to “control their own bodies” and have abortions when answering the climate change question.

“The answer is yes and the answer has everything to do with the fact that women, in the United States of America, by the way, have a right to control their own bodies and make reproductive decisions,” Sanders said.

WATCH:

Sanders specifically voiced support for U.S.-taxpayer funded abortions, bringing up the Mexico City agreement, the Washington Examiner reported.

“And the Mexico City agreement, which denies American aid to those organizations around the world that allow women to have abortions or even get involved in birth control, to me is totally absurd,” he added.

Bernie Says, ‘Abortion Is A Constitutional Right’)

“So I think especially in poor countries around the world, where women do not necessarily want to have large numbers of babies and where they can have the opportunity through birth control to control the number of kids they have: something I very, very strongly support.”

All of the major Democratic candidates have expressed support for abortion rights, but none have tied abortion to climate change or discussed it as a means of population control.

Sanders touts fundraising milestone, hitting 1 million individual donors
By Paul Steinhauser | Fox News

Sen. Bernie Sanders is spotlighting that his presidential campaign has received contributions from one million individual donors.

The independent senator from Vermont’s campaign – in announcing the news on Thursday – touted that Sanders was the fastest presidential candidate in history to reach that fundraising milestone – as well as the first Democrat this election cycle to reach the threshold.

“With 1 million contributors, this is the only Democratic campaign that has more supporters than Donald Trump,” campaign manager Faiz Shakir highlighted. “Our strength is in numbers, and that is why Bernie Sanders is the only candidate who is able to say his campaign will rely only on grassroots funding in both the primary and against Donald Trump.”

Sanders has relied almost entirely on small, online donations from supporters, and rarely has held fundraisers. Despite abstaining from the high-dollar finance events that some of his top rivals for the presidential nomination have held, Sanders has stayed competitive in the dash for campaign cash.

He reported an $18 million haul in the April-June quarter of fundraising this year. That placed the populist senator third behind South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg ($24.9 million), former Vice President Joe Biden ($22 million) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts ($19.2 million), the other progressive standard-bearer in the record-setting field who’s also eschewed big-bucks fundraisers this year.

The Sanders campaign noted that 99.95 percent of its donors were able to contribute again.

The Sanders fundraising news came as the candidate – who once was clearly in second place behind Biden, the front-runner – was now neck and neck with Warren in most of the latest national and early voting state polls.

Vitty--
Bernie is looking really bad- worn out sickly.

Seriously, he's not going to make it to the finish line..

I like the old duffer, and I hope he quits and takes care of himself before its too late.
He's never going to be president but he surely could be dead.

Sanders hauls in eye-popping $25 million in past three months
By Paul Steinhauser | Fox News

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders hauled in a whopping $25.3 million during the July-September third quarter of fundraising, his presidential campaign announced on Tuesday morning.

The massive fundraising figure is up more than $7 million from his second-quarter numbers.

Pete Buttigieg’s campaign reported early Tuesday morning that the South Bend, Indiana mayor raised $19.1 million the past three months. While impressive, the candidate’s fundraising haul is down from the $24.8 million he brought in during the second quarter, which was the highest among the record-setting field of Democratic White House hopefuls during the April-June quarter.

Unlike some of his rivals for the nomination – such as former Vice President Joe Biden, Buttigieg, and Sen. Kamala Harris of California – Sanders eschews big donor fundraisers and instead relies solely on grassroots donations. The campaign announced it received 1.4 million donations the past three months.

Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir said in a statement that "Bernie is proud to be the only candidate running to defeat Donald Trump who is 100 percent funded by grassroots donations – both in the primary and in the general."

News of Sanders’ cash haul comes as the populist independent senator from Vermont has faded in many recent polls to third place behind Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who along with Sanders is the other progressive standard-bearer in the 2020 Democratic nomination race.

Shakir argued that “media elites and professional pundits have tried repeatedly to dismiss this campaign, and yet working-class Americans keep saying loudly and clearly that they want a political revolution."

The Sanders campaign announced that its average individual contribution was $19 and that more than 99.9 percent of contributors have not maxed out and are able to donate again to the campaign.

The Buttigieg campaign highlighted that they’ve now raised more than $51 million since the beginning of the year. They said that 182,000 new people contributed to the campaign in the third quarter, bringing the total number of donors this year to 580,000. The campaign also reported that the average contribution the past three months was $32.

Buttigieg, a one-time long-shot for the nomination, soared in the spring to near top-tier status. While he's continued to haul in large amounts of campaign cash and build up a formidable team in the crucial early voting states, his poll numbers stagnated during the summer.

Campaign cash is a crucial barometer of a candidate’s appeal and popularity and of his or her campaign’s strength. The third-quarter fundraising figures of the Democratic presidential candidates will be heavily analyzed and scrutinized. Fundraising dollars can be used by the candidates to pay for campaign staff and grassroots outreach efforts, travel, and ads.

If Bernie brought in a trillion dollars he'll never be president,
I like the guy, but he won't make it.

In a statement Wednesday, the senator’s advisor Jeff Weaver said Sanders “experienced some chest discomfort” during a Tuesday event. Testing found a “blockage in one artery,” and Sanders had two stents inserted, Weaver saaid.

“Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days,” Weaver said. “We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.”

No way would he have a chance anyway.

Sanders Says He’ll Cut Down on Campaign Events in Wake of Heart Attack

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told reporters Tuesday that he would be changing the “nature of the campaign a bit” in the wake of his heart attack last week.

When he was asked if he would “keep up the same type of robust schedule” he had prior to his heart attack, the senator said he wouldn't be able to do so “immediately.” “Look, we were doing—in some cases—five or six meetings a day, three or four rallies and town meetings and meeting with groups of people. I don't think I'm going to do that,” he said. “But I certainly intend to be actively campaigning.

I think we're going to change the nature of the campaign a bit, make sure that I have the strength to do what I have to do.” When asked what he meant by changing the nature of the campaign, Sanders said he would “probably not” be doing up to four rallies per day on the trial. “I'm not quite sure on this... but I don't think there's anyone who did more rallies than we have done,” he said.
