Facebook to bar politicians from posting deceptive content.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg, shown in this April 11, 2018 photo, has said private companies should not be the judges of truth when it comes to what people say
San Francisco (AFP) - Facebook plans to eliminate an exemption for politicians that allows them to post content deemed deceptive or abusive, and will hold them to the same standards as other users, news website The Verge reported Thursday.

The controversial exemption, given to politicians under the auspices of their posts being newsworthy, could end as soon as this week on the leading social network, the news site said.

Facebook did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment on the matter.

The policy reversal would come after an independent oversight board said Facebook was right to oust former president Donald Trump for his comments regarding the deadly January 6 rampage at the US Capitol.

Trump was suspended from Facebook and Instagram after posting a video during the attack by his fired-up supporters challenging his election loss, in which he told them: "We love you, you're very special."

However, the panel gave Facebook six months to justify why his ban should be permanent -- putting the ball in company chief Mark Zuckerberg's court and spotlighting weaknesses in the platform's plan for self-regulation.

Oversight panel co-chair Michael McConnell said in a May 9 interview on Fox News Sunday that Trump encouraged the Capitol rioters and so earned his Facebook ban, but the social media giant's rules are in "shambles" and need fixing.

Zuckerberg has stressed his belief that private companies should not be the judges of truth when it comes to what people say.

Democrats have slammed online platforms for failing to stem misinformation while Republicans have contended that social networks are biased against conservatives.

Facebook is also planning to be more transparent about "strikes" issued to accounts for breaking content rules, according to the Verge.

The controversial exemption, given to politicians under the auspices of their posts being newsworthy, could end as soon as this week on the leading social network.

Trump vows he won’t eat with Mark Zuckerberg next time he’s president

President Donald Trump is angered that Facebook will continue to ban him for at least another 18 months after his "Big Lie" about election fraud incited the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

"Given the gravity of the circumstances that led to Mr. Trump's suspension, we believe his actions constituted a severe violation of our rules which merit the highest penalty available under the new enforcement protocols.
We are suspending his accounts for two years, effective from the date of the initial suspension on January 7 this year," Facebook VP of global affairs Nick Clegg said in a statement.

"At the end of this period, we will look to experts to assess whether the risk to public safety has receded. We will evaluate external factors, including instances of violence, restrictions on peaceful assembly and other markers of civil unrest.

If we determine that there is still a serious risk to public safety, we will extend the restriction for a set period of time and continue to re-evaluate until that risk has receded," Facebook explained.

"In establishing the two year sanction for severe violations, we considered the need for it to be long enough to allow a safe period of time after the acts of incitement, to be significant enough to be a deterrent to Mr. Trump and others from committing such severe violations in future, and to be proportionate to the gravity of the violation itself."

That angered Trump. Unable to post to Facebook or Twitter and having shut down his blog, Trump responded with a statement emailed to reporters.

"Next time I'm in the White House there will be no more dinners, at his request, with Mark Zuckerberg and his wife. It will be all business!" Trump wrote.

The all-time UUUGGE Looser-
will do anything in hopes of keeping him relevant AHAA!

New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman is reporting
that former President Donald Trump intends
to sue Twitter and Facebook for banning him.

Trump on Tuesday night teased a major announcement that he
will be making on Wednesday -- but Haberman revealed
that the major announcement will be about lawsuits
he's bringing against social media giants who booted him
off in the wake of the deadly riots he incited at the
United States Capitol building.

Trump isn't likely to succeed with the lawsuit as he
agreed to the "Terms of Service"
of Twitter and Facebook,
which is a binding contract saying
that if he breaks their rules he can be removed.

Trump was removed after losing his 2020 election
and spreading lies about it online that both sites
have worked to stop from spreading.

Trump was also removed from -
Snapchat, Instagram, Pinterest and other sites,
but he appears to only be suing Twitter and Facebook.
