Trump is already claiming the California recall is rigged.
OAKLAND — Donald Trump opened his presidency by falsely claiming massive voter fraud in California. Now he’s returned to the subject, raising the prospect that the outcome of next week’s recall election could follow the same divisive path as last year’s presidential election.
Trump, who told Newsmax this week that the election to recall Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is “probably rigged,” is the most prominent in a string of conservatives who have cast evidence-free aspersions on the upcoming vote.
With Republican figures simultaneously telling voters that Newsom’s defeat is inevitable and cautioning that Democrats will try to manipulate the outcome — and polls showing Newsom is likely to survive — it’s a combustible combination. It also might be a preview of what’s in store for the 2022 midterm elections in the wake of Trump’s barrage of false claims about the integrity of election results.
Conservative commentator Tomi Lahren assured viewers this week that only malfeasance could deliver Newsom a win.
“The only thing that will save Gavin Newsom is voter fraud,” Lahren said on Fox.
As prominent Republicans and pundits fan the flames, social media has circulated a story about Torrance police arresting a man with drugs, a gun and hundreds of sealed mail-in ballots (police are still investigating) and a debunked claim that California ballots are designed to reveal how people voted.
All of it resembles the contentious aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, which has been marked by Trump’s ongoing election fraud lie.
“There has been this relentless false narrative about election fraud we’ve been hearing for almost a year now” that “peaked with the insurrection on Jan. 6, and it’s been continuing,” said Kim Alexander, president of the nonpartisan California Voter Foundation. “Just because something doesn’t make sense to you doesn’t mean someone’s trying to steal your vote,” she added, but as conspiracies circulate online, “the more outrageous it is, the quicker people hit the ‘share’ button.”
Warnings about pervasive fraud have helped erode Republican distrust in elections. And no one has played a more pivotal role in undermining trust than Trump. As far back as 2016, after Trump lost California by more than 4 million votes, he claimed he was the victim of “massive voter fraud.”
Two years later, he returned to the subject. "In many places, like California, the same person votes many times — you've probably heard about that," Trump said, without offering any proof. "They always like to say 'oh, that's a conspiracy theory' not a conspiracy theory, folks. Millions and millions of people."
California Republicans once reliably voted early by mail while Democrats waited until the last moment. But that dynamic has flipped in recent years as Trump and other conservatives relentlessly hammered mail voting as vulnerable to fraud. In 2020, California shifted to a model in which elections officials mail every voter a ballot and in a repeat of the voting dynamics of 2020, Democrats are now far outpacing Republicans in returning recall ballots.
“You’ve got the fear factor where all the Republicans are holding onto their ballots because Donald Trump made the statement prior to Georgia, ‘hold on to your ballots, don’t vote in person’,” said pro-recall consultant Anne Dunsmore. “I got all of these crazy responses of, ‘it’s a wasted vote.’”
The California Republican Party is both encouraging voters to trust the process and creating avenues to report wrongdoing. The party has put out videos featuring Rep. Michelle Steel and other figures urging voters to participate, including by mail or by handing ballots off to collectors — a process conservatives once decried as “ballot harvesting” and now pursue.
Its website also features options to volunteer or contribute money to “election integrity” efforts that could include legal action.
“It’s their excuse for losing elections when, in reality, Republicans need to change if they want to win again in California,” Mayes said, “and when they blame voting fraud it gives them an excuse not to change.”

Rose McGowan's endorsement of right-winger Larry Elder claims Obama is 'in' on Weinstein rapes.
Rose McGowan has always been pro-women and a feminist, but in a surprise turn Sunday, she endorsed anti-woman Republican Larry Elder for governor in California.
McGowan once alleged that the wife of Gov. Gavin Newsom "tried to bribe" her before coming out about her experiences with Harvey Weinstein. That appears to have angered McGowan so much that she was willing to support a man who has frequently insulted women and even brandished a gun at his then-fiance.
At the press conference, McGowan was asked why if Newsom's wife isn't on the ballot that it matters how much she hates the spouse of the governor.
She then turned to attack former President Barack Obama, who she accused of being "in" on the rape and abuse by Harvey Weinstein.
"Obama's daughter interned for my rapist two months before I exposed him in the New York Times," she said. "They're all in it [together] and you know it."
Obama's daughter interned for the Weinstein Company for three months, and as of 2018, the company had never paid her. Presumably, if the Obamas knew about the Weinstein allegations they wouldn't have allowed their daughter to work for him.
When the allegations surfaced the Obama's released the following statement:
"Michelle and I have been disgusted by the recent reports about Harvey Weinstein. Any man who demeans and degrades women in such fashion needs to be condemned and held accountable, regardless of wealth or status."

Larry Elder's campaign promotes website alleging Gavin Newsom stole recall election that hasn't happened yet.
Polling of the California recall election indicates that Gov. Gavin Newsom is likely going to survive but that isn't stopping rival Larry Elder's campaign from preemptively claiming that the election was stolen from him.
NBC News reports that Elder on Monday promoted an "online form to report fraud, which claimed it had 'detected fraud' in the 'results' of the California recall election 'resulting in Governor Gavin Newsom being reinstated as governor.'"
The website also used technical mumbo-jumbo to prove its case for voter fraud.
"Statistical analyses used to detect fraud in elections held in 3rd-world nations (such as Russia, Venezuela, and Iran) have detected fraud in California resulting in Governor Gavin Newsom being reinstated as governor," the site claims. "The primary analytical tool used was Benford's Law and can be readily reproduced."
The problem with this is that the recall election hasn't actually happened yet, which makes it difficult to definitively claim that Newsom stole it.
Elder has hinted for weeks that he will not accept the results of the recall election if he manages to come up short, similar to the way former President Donald Trump refused to admit that he lost the 2020 presidential election.
In fact, Elder has already promised a slew of lawsuits to challenge the results of the recall, even if Newsom wins it by an overwhelming margin. |

| WATCH – California Recall: Polling Center Tells Some Republicans They ‘Already Voted’PAUL BOIS, 13 Sep 2021 Some self-identified Republicans claim they arrived at their polling center to cast their ballots in the California recall election only to be told they had “already voted.” “At El Camino Real Charter High School in Woodland Hills, some voters say they were told the computers showed them as already having voted, even though they had not,” reported KTLA. Estelle Bender, 88, said poll workers informed her she and several friends of hers had already voted. She also allegedly witness another man arguing with a poll worker over the same issue. “What happened today and how shocked are you?” a reporter asked Bender. “Very. I went to El Camino High School to vote. Got there at 10:30. Gave her this [ballot] and she scanned and said ‘you voted,’ and I said, ‘no, I haven’t,” Bender told KTLA. “She said this has been happening all morning,” Bender further alleged. “The man next to me was arguing the same thing,” Bender filled out a provisional ballot and left feeling “really angry.” “I saw two women walking toward me as I left and I said, ‘don’t be surprised if they tell you’ve already voted, and she said, ‘They’ve already done that. If I voted, how did I vote?” According to Bender, the people she knew affected by the issue were “self-identified Republicans,” which gave her cause for suspicion. “I asked the couple of young women that I talked to and I said, ‘Are you by any chance Republicans?’ And she said ‘yes’ and I said, ‘So am I,'” asserted Bender. Watch below: https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2021/09/13/watch-california-recall-polling-center-tells-some-republicans-they-already-voted/The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s office said equipment was “replaced” at the polling center and that provisional ballots are a “failsafe option” for these kinds of glitches.” “The voters who experienced this issue were offered and provided provisional ballots – the failsafe option to ensure no one has turned away from voting,” the statement said. “Provisional ballots are regular ballots and once the eligibility of the voter is verified, they are processed and counted. After troubleshooting the issue, the equipment at the locations was replaced and voting continued.” |

| **No pronlem; They were offered a Provisional ballot
Why might I have to vote a provisional ballot.
Our records show that you received a mail-in ballot for this election or already voted in this election.
Will my provisional ballot count?
Provisional ballots are reviewed and counted even if they will not change the outcome of an election. Election officials start counting provisional ballots on the 2nd Wednesday after each election. Your ballot will be counted if you are a registered voter, were eligible to vote by provisional ballot, and met any other applicable requirements. |

Gavin Newsom survives GOP effort to recall him as California governor.
Republicans had pinned their hopes on Larry Elder, who preemptively pushed conspiracy theories about election fraud and had been closely linked to Donald Trump.
The race was called less than one hour after the polls closed. Not recalled. |

| Embattled governor heaves sigh of relief Sophie Long, BBC News, Los Angeles
As the polls closed across California, the governor of the Golden State was probably breathing a little more easily than he would have been a couple of months ago. At the beginning of August, the polls indicated that this could be an unexpectedly tight race.
And it wasn't just Gavin Newsom who was sweating in the intense Californian summer heat.
If he were to lose this recall election, it wouldn't just end his political career - it would result in a hand-break turn for the political trajectory of California, with a new Republican Governor elected by a tiny proportion of the state's 22 million voters. And that could have major national implications.
California's senior Senator Diane Feinstein is 88 years old. If she were, for any reason, unable to complete her term after a new Republican Governor had been inaugurated, they would appoint her replacement and, in doing so, immediately eliminate the Democrats voting majority of just one in the Senate.
What began as a grassroots recall effort effectively became a referendum on the Democrats' handling of the coronavirus. Strategists on both sides will now be looking for indications of how their national pandemic policies are playing in marginal congressional districts.
This is, if you like, a training run ahead of next year's mid-term marathon.

Gavin Newsom's landslide win destroyed Trump's 'calamitous lies' about election fraud: conservative.
Conservative Washington Post columnist Henry Olsen - threw down the gauntlet at former President Donald Trump on Wednesday, and he argued that Republicans need to realize that the former president has been flat-out lying to their voters about widespread election fraud.
In particular, Olsen took issue with Trump's claim that the California recall election must have been "rigged" because mail-in ballots are supposedly rife with fraud.
In reality, Olsen shows, the voting patterns seen in past elections are entirely consistent with the results of the recall vote.
"Newsom's best performance in his 2018 victory took place in seven Bay Area and coastal counties plus Los Angeles." "The data so far show those seven northern California counties were also his best seven counties in the recall, and Los Angeles was his 10th best."
Conversely, writes Olsen, "Newsom's five worst counties in 2018, all in the rural north, were also his five worst in the recall," which makes it highly unlikely that some mass fraud took place.
Olsen then praised California GOP candidate Larry Elder for conceding what was an obvious defeat on Tuesday night, despite the fact that he had threatened to pull a Trump and contest the results of the recall in court.
The message for Republicans, Olsen concludes, is that they need to stop indulging Trump's lies about being cheated out of the 2020 election.
"Republicans can and will win elsewhere," he writes. "They should get on with that job and stop repeating Trump's calamitous lies." |
