| Biden Approval Falls, Holding Near Low End of His Presidency, Reuters/Ipsos Finds
Tuesday, 30 August 2022 05:56 PM EDT President Joe Biden's public approval rating fell modestly this week, a poor sign for his Democratic Party's hopes in the Nov. 8 midterm elections, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll completed on Tuesday. The two-day national poll found that 38% of Americans approve of Biden's job performance. While Biden's approval rating hit 41% last week, it has been mostly below 40% since mid-June despite a string of Democratic legislative victories that Biden's allies hope will help them defend their narrow congressional majorities in November. Democrats are expected to lose control of the U.S. House of Representatives in November and possibly the Senate as well. Even with control only of the House, Republicans would be able to bring Biden's legislative agenda to a halt and launch potentially politically damaging investigations. Biden's overall approval rating has been below 50% for over a year as Americans have grappled with high rates of inflation and an economy scarred by the COVID-19 health crisis. Biden's lowest ratings of 36% - in four weekly polls in May, June and July - rivaled the lows of his predecessor, Donald Trump, whose popularity bottomed out at 33% in December 2017. When poll respondents this week were asked to rank the nation's biggest problems, the economy topped concerns, with a third of Republicans and a quarter of Democrats pointing to it as the top issue. For Republicans, the next most pressing problems were immigration and crime, each of which topped concerns for about one in 10 Republicans. Among Democrats, about one in eight saw the environment as the top issue, and about one in 10 pointed to the end of national abortion rights. Reuters/Ipsos this week added abortion rights to a list of concerns for Americans to rank, a list that also includes immigration and healthcare, as the issue has attracted more attention since a June U.S. Supreme Court decision ending the nationwide constitutional right to abortion. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted online in English throughout the United States, gathered responses from 1,005 adults, including 449 Democrats and 357 Republicans. It has a credibility interval - a measure of precision - of four percentage points. 2022 Thomson/Reuters. All rights reserved. |

Biden's approval rating rebounds to its highest level in a year ... 22 hours ago
President Joe Biden’s hot streak is starting to show up in the polls. Many thought the upcoming mid-term elections would be catastrophic for the Democrats, but Biden’s string of recent successes has given new life to the president and his party.
There is still a risk that the Democrats will lose control of Congress, ___but Biden’s job approval rating has reached its high_est level in a year, according to a Gallup poll released on August 25.____
In just one month, however, Biden’s job approval has jumped to 44%. His rating among independent voters (not registered as Republican or Democrat) rose from 31% to 40% in a single month. Among Democrats, his rating rose from 78% to 81%. But he’s still at rock bottom (4%) with Republican voters.
In early August, US forces targeted Ayman al-Zawahiri in a precision drone attack that killed the Al Qaeda leader in his Kabul (Afghanistan) home.
That same week, the unemployment rate fell to 3.5%, its lowest level in 50 years. Soon after, the year-over-year inflation rate dropped slightly thanks to lower gasoline prices, and Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act, which, in addition to its fiscal measures, includes initiatives to combat climate change initiative and reduce medical and pharmacy costs for consumers. Following that major legislative win, Biden signed a law to promote US chip manufacturing and announced a debt relief plan benefitting millions of people with outstanding student loans.
The ongoing drama surrounding the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump’s mansion in Palm Beach (Florida, USA) and the subsequent revelations that the former president improperly stored classified documents there may have also factored into Biden’s surging job approval.
Speaking at a Democratic National Committee grassroots campaign rally on August 25, Biden said, “My dad used to have a saying. He said, ‘Joey, don’t compare me to the Almighty. Compare me to the alternative.’
Well, the alternative to the Democrats is the MAGA [Trump’s Make America Great Again slogan] Republicans.” Republicans wanted the November elections to be a referendum on Biden, but it may end up being a referendum on Trump.
Biden Rated Best for Handling COVID-19 Response, Environment Of 11 issues asked about, Biden is rated highest for his management of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I t is the only issue that garners majority-level approval (58%), including from 88% of Democrats, 58% of independents and 20% of Republicans.
Approval of Biden's handling of the environment is at 50% and is the only other issue with majority-level approval from independents. Democrats' ratings of Biden's handling of the other nine issues range from 63% to 78%.
Between 41% and 46% of U.S. adults approve of the way the president is handling education, the situation in Ukraine, energy policy and foreign affairs.
Fewer, 31% to 39% of Americans, approve of the way Biden is managing relations with Russia, immigration, gun policy, abortion policy and the economy, with his economy rating the lowest. USAToday
