Small election glitches today will be used as justification for violence tomorrow.
There have been minor glitches around the country for the 2022 midterm elections. In some places, machines were broken and had to be reset. In Pennsylvania, they ran out of ballots. They are all things that have happened before. But former Justice Department acting assistant attorney general for national security Mary McCord warned of impending violence.
"Certainly today, this is the culmination of more than two years of disinformation that is fueling various online threats," said McCord. There have been "some minor mechanical glitch in the process, that's exploding online as being proof of some sort of fraud in the election process and something that will mean that a result that is not to the liking of certain people in this country will be blamed on a rigged election.
So, what I'm worried about, and, again, I think things have gone relatively smoothly in terms of voter safety at polling places, but what I'm worried about is what will come after today when any one of these little glitches becomes the basis for baseless litigation over voter fraud and potential intimidation of the people who are in charge with counting ballots."
"Minor, things will fuel this bitter narrative of voter fraud that has been rampant for the last two years in which the former president today is doubling down on," McCord continued.
"Things like, protest, protest, protest in reference to Detroit, which is very troubling, because it harkens back some of his invitations for people to take matters into their own hands. As we know the last time he did that in a big way resulted in the attack on the Capitol on Jan 6th. We certainly don't want to see anything remotely like that, even if it's at the different locations where votes will be tabulated."
The future focus will be on the Capitol and major state capitol buildings, particularly in swing states, over the coming days.
"The ones that have already been the epicenters of -- episodes of voter intimidation, even at ballot drop boxes, et cetera," she predicted. "Americans had been marinating in the stew of lies, and people are more accepting of these lies over two years.
Too many people have accepted these lies. Too many politicians have run on these lies and have not committed to respecting the results of the election. In fact, have said very clearly in some cases that they won't accept the results and they will litigate."
She clarified that she didn't want to make things sound too overblown and that she was hopeful thanks to the early involvement of law enforcement.
"We hope those people will be very steely in their response to this. But we have seen violence before and we need to be prepared for it," she closed.

It took less than 2 hours for election lies about Arizona to go viral.
Mark Twain's adage is that false information can spread around the world before the truth gets its boots on.
It took less than two hours for an election lie to go viral.
Last week, there was a restraining order issued against conservative, sometimes armed militia members who were sitting outside of ballot drop boxes filming people, chasing people and generally trying to scare people.
It gave an opportunity for a case study to chart the role of disinformation and how it can generate discord among political foes.
The incident began when a Twitter video was posted showing a site in Anthem, Arizona last Tuesday. A poll worker tells a line of voters the site's machines aren't working and tries to tell them that their ballots will be read manually.
Right-wing firebrand Charlie Kirk, a long-time "disinformation disseminator," tweeted the video at 9:26 a.m. and two hours later millions had watched it, data collected by Kate Starbird revealed.
She's a researcher studying misinformation in social media at the University of Washington state. The project is partnering with Stanford University for the Election Integrity Partnership.
They falsely claimed that the idea of a "faulty machine" was a plot by Democrats to throw out ballots for Republicans. "Cheating" became a trending topic. Donald Trump Jr. spread the misinformation.
About an hour later, Maricopa County Elections Department tweeted their own video to fact-check the initial video.
"In it, two election officials explain that all ballots will be counted regardless of faulty tabulators and that hand-counting ballots is standard in most Arizona counties on election days," the report explained.
"The officials further added that voters can opt to cast their ballots at any location, and can go elsewhere if they really want to put their ballot in a working machine."
That sparked a whole other debate online with people like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), sounding the alarm about "chain of custody," which is a legal issue in her state but not in Arizona.
"But that video has been viewed significantly less than Kirk’s, with less than half a million watches," the report explained.

| Dead man reelected in Pennsylvania
by Brady Knox, Breaking News Reporter | the Washington Examiner November 09, 2022 12:46 AM A Pennsylvania man who died earlier this year was reelected to his position as a state representative. Democrat Tony DeLuca, the longest-running Pennsylvania state representative, at 39 years, died last month at 85 of lymphoma, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Because of his recent death, election authorities were unable to change the ballots, and many voters chose him over Green Party challenger Queonia "Zarah" Livingston, marked by a sizable lead. A special election will be held to choose a proper candidate to take his seat. "While we're incredibly saddened by the loss of Representative Tony DeLuca, we are proud to see the voters to continue to show their confidence in him and his commitment to Democratic values by re-electing him posthumously. A special election will follow soon," Pennsylvania House Democrats said in a tweet. Some observers speculate that many voters chose DeLuca knowing he was dead in order to force a special election rather than vote for his third-party opponent, according to local reporter Charlie Wolfson. Livingston, a former healthcare worker, ran on a decidedly left-wing platform, putting as her three main priorities on her website "environmental justice," "ending the war on drugs," and "reducing gun violence." Among her policy proposals were a ban on fracking, legalizing and funding "safe injection sites and needle exchanges," and establishing a $20 minimum wage, an almost three times increase over what it is currently. DeLuca served as Democratic chairman on the House Insurance Committee for 20 years, according to WTAE. Press secretary Nicole Reigelman told the outlet that the special election to fill DeLuca's seat will likely be held in early spring. |
