Tucker Carlson and Fox News part ways
The stunning announcement came days after the network settled a high-stakes defamation lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems.
By Daniel Arkin

Fox News said Monday it is parting ways with firebrand anchor Tucker Carlson, the network's most popular prime-time host and a leading voice in the modern conservative movement. Fox News' "Tucker Carlson Tonight" has been one of the most watched news shows on cable television. Fox News

The network announced the stunning news days after it agreed to pay nearly $800 million to Dominion Voting Systems to avert a high-stakes defamation trial that had cast a shadow over the future of the network.

"FOX News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways," the company said in a short news release. "Mr. Carlson's last program was Friday April 21st."

Fox News did not specify why Carlson is leaving the network, and a spokeswoman did not immediately respond to an email from NBC News requesting more information on the reason for his abrupt exit.

The network's statement did not include any comment from Carlson.

"Tucker Carlson Tonight," a cornerstone of the Fox News programming lineup since 2016, was one of the most-watched shows on American cable news, outpacing rivals at CNN and MSNBC.

Carlson established himself as one of the most influential figures in a conservative political coalition reshaped by former President Donald Trump. He regularly drew controversy for incendiary statements about race, LGBTQ rights and other topics.

He also attracted intense scrutiny for spreading political misinformation, fostering conspiracy theories about the results of the 2020 presidential election and minimizing the severity of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

In the lead-up to the Dominion trial, Carlson's internal communications were released and showed him criticizing Trump and acknowledging that claims about voter fraud in the 2020 election were baseless.

"I hate him passionately," Carlson said in a text message to an unidentified person on Jan. 4, 2021, according to exhibits unsealed before the Dominion trial was set to begin.

But the television personality later backtracked and recently devoted a full episode of his show to an interview with Trump, who is once again seeking the Republican nomination for president.

The stock price of Fox Corp., the parent company of Fox News, dropped sharply after Carlson’s departure became public, dipping more than 4%.

I'm actually shocked

Carlson has been their golden cow for years .. I would think Fox would need him to help recoup some of the millions they lost in the Dominion settlement

Damn, that reads like it was written by someone at The New York Times, Washington Post, or maybe even Temple in a lucid moment Smile

I guess we'll hafta wait to get the story behind it ... I like Carlson.. He was the only one that added some humor with his monologues... I don't watch vids of the other Fox folks much

Tucker Carlson and Fox News part ways 6446c32c17a7b6446c32c17a7c

NEW YORK, NY — As part of a plan to broaden its audience, the long-running daytime talk show The View has announced former Fox News host Tucker Carlson will be joining the program's panel. Producers hope Carlson's presence will both draw new viewers and educate current cast members.

"Tucker's going to be a great addition," said Executive Producer Brian Teta. "Not only will we reap the benefits of bringing in a more politically conservative audience but our other co-hosts will benefit from hearing new political perspectives! Win-win!"

Early test footage shows Carlson surrounded by laughing women looking perplexed, apparently shocked by a dumb thing Joy Behar said.

Though Carlson had quickly become a hot commodity on the media landscape after his shocking departure from Fox News was announced, his new co-panelists expressed mixed feelings about him joining the group. "We don't tolerate any differing opinions on this show," said longest-tenured panelist Joy Behar. "There's a reason the program is called ‘The View,' and not 'The Views!' There is only one acceptable view around here! Tucker is a Nazi!" She then screeched loudly and attempted to claw the conservative anchor's eyes out.

The program has featured some conservative voices in the past, but analysts believe this time will be far different. "It's going to be a bloodbath, for sure," said one expert. "Just wait until Whoopi Goldberg says something really stupid and Tucker has to respond. Must-see TV, right there."

At publishing time, Behar, Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, and Ana Navarro were considering walking out and reportedly already accusing producers of perpetrating "literal violence" simply by hiring Carlson.

Elon Musk Responds to Calls to Hire Ex-Fox News Star Tucker Carlson
Will the former Fox News star join the billionaire CEO, who was one of his last big guests before he was ousted?
TheStreet, LUC OLINGA, 5 HOURS AGO

The media universe and the business world are still in shock.

Tucker Carlson, the king of cable-TV ratings, is no longer at Fox News, which he helped make a prime-time powerhouse since 2016.

The network on April 24 to everyone's surprise the departure of its star anchor, just days after the company agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle a defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems.

Fox News hosts had wrongfully accused the company of stealing victory in the 2020 presidential election from then-President Donald Trump. The software company sued the network for spreading false accusations that it was at the center of a vast conspiracy to cheat Trump of his victory.

For weeks Fox News hosts including Carlson had claimed that Dominion voting machines, used in some states, enabled widespread fraud in favor of the Democratic candidate, Joe Biden.

But private messaging from those same hosts, uncovered during the discovery process, showed that privately Carlson and others knew those conspiracy theories were false, but that didn't stop them from continuing to hammer on air that Trump was robbed of his victory.

Musk Was One of Carlson's Last Guests

Other proceedings are in progress, in particular a lawsuit similar to that of Dominion Voting Systems brought by Smartmatic, whose voting machines had also been questioned by Fox hosts.

The network canceled the show hosted by Lou Dobbs, another star, who was also promoting conspiracy theories about election fraud.

While no trial took place, the Dominion case exposed to the public the fact that Fox News' hosts were willing to relay information that they knew full well was false.

"FOX News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways," the network said in a statement. "We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor."

FOX News did not give the reasons for this unexpected and express divorce.  Carlson's departure was immediate; his final show was Friday, April 21.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla  (TSLA) - Get Free Report and owner of Twitter, was one of Carlson's final guests. His interview was broadcast over two evenings, April 18 and 19. During the interview, the two personalities, who have become conservative icons, discussed a range of subjects, including Musk's takeover of Twitter, wokeism, Trump, Biden, free speech, birth rates and more.

It is against this backdrop that some Twitter users have called on Musk to hire Carlson to form a phenomenal duo that conservatives would revere.

The billionaire ruled out this scenario, but he did not close the door to the possibility that Carlson might use Twitter as a lectern for his next professional endeavors.

"Elon Musk should hire Tucker Carlson and start a video service to compete with YouTube,” a user tweeted at the billionaire.

"Or we don't hire anyone, but simply enable content creators to prosper on this platform without applying censorship that goes beyond the law," the billionaire responded.

Musk's Plans for an Everything App

Musk, who wants to make Twitter a super app or everything app like Chinese apps, for a few weeks has been enabling influencers and content creators to monetize their content.

He added a button on Twitter and has ensured that Twitter does not take a cut, unlike Alphabet's  (GOOGL) - Get Free Report YouTube; Meta Platforms,  (META) - Get Free Report parent of Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp; and TikTok. The creators get most of the revenue, Musk has said.

"Content creators may wish to enable subscriptions on this platform. Just tap on Monetization in settings," Musk posted on April 24 with a guideline.

On April 18 the tech tycoon said: "Note: creator gets ~92% of subscription for web subscribers (Stripe & CC fees are ~8%), but only 70% on iOS/Android. Twitter keeps nothing. All funds we receive go to the content creator."

By making Twitter the avenue for the creator economy, Musk hopes to make it a kind of hip platform, which would bring back most advertisers. Many have paused the promotion of their products and services on Twitter because of the tech mogul's laissez-faire approach to content moderation.

If Carlson were to choose Twitter to produce content, it would be a big win for Musk in his ambition to compete with Big Tech.

The populist pundit had spectacular ratings: His show, "Tucker Carlson Tonight," averaged more than 3 million viewers a night, making it the top-rated cable show in prime time.

Tucker Carlson Has Theory On Why He Was Fired And It Is Massive News
Carmine Sabia, April 25, 2023

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson believes he knows the reason he was fired from the network and if he is correct, it is massive news. He has not said anything to his fans, but he appears to believe that the Murdoch family is planning on selling the network, Vanity Fair reported.

“Carlson has told people he doesn’t know why he was terminated. According to the source, Scott refused to tell him how the decision was made; she only said that it was made ‘from above.’ Carlson has told people he believes his controversial show is being taken off the air because the Murdoch children intend to sell Fox News at some point,” it said.

Carlson, the highest-rated cable news host in history, is out at Fox News. And now a new report sheds light on who made the final decision to cut ties with Carlson.

A new report reveals that Lachlan Murdoch, the chief executive of Fox Corporation, and Suzanne Scott, chief executive of Fox News Media, decided on Friday night to fire Carlson. Then, Scott informed Carlson on Monday morning of the decision.

“The power that Mr. Carlson, 53, wielded outside Fox News could not insulate him from a growing list of troubles inside the network related to his conduct on and off the air, some of which had been grating on Mr. Murdoch and his father, Rupert Murdoch, the chairman of Fox Corporation, who co-founded the network in 1996, according to the two people with knowledge of the company’s decision,” the New York Times reported.

“The host, a polarizing and unpopular figure at the network outside of his own staff, was exposed as part of a defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems as a bully who denigrated colleagues and sources, often in profane and sexist language and called for the firing of Fox journalists whose coverage he disliked. He has also drawn condemnation from the right and left for his role in fostering a revisionist account of the assault on the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021,” the outlet added.

The NYT report then suggests Carlson’s segment detailing the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was a “point of contention.”

“One early point of contention was Mr. Carlson’s 2021 documentary, ‘Patriot Purge,’ which advanced the conspiracy theory that the attack that day was a so-called false flag operation designed to discredit the former president and his political movement. Lachlan Murdoch was said to have been caught off guard by the program, which also led two conservative Fox News contributors to quit in protest, Jonah Goldberg and Stephen Hayes,” the NYT reported.

“In March, Mr. Carlson edited down tens of thousands of hours of footage from the attack given to him by Speaker Kevin McCarthy and used them to falsely portray the rioters as people Mr. Carlson called ‘mostly peaceful’ onlookers who had innocently ambled into the Capitol. The broadcast drew a rebuke from Senator Mitch McConnell, who is a friend of Rupert Murdoch’s and said Mr. Carlson had drawn ‘offensive and misleading conclusions,'” the outlet continued.

Fox News announced on Monday morning that Carlson and the network “have agreed to part ways” after more than a decade.

In a statement read on “Outnumbered,” host Harris Faulkner briefly stated that the network will have a series of rotating hosts to fill Carlson’s 8 p.m. slot. Fox said Carlson’s last show aired Friday and that starting Monday night, the network will have “an interim show with rotating Fox News personalities until a new host is named.”

Fox released a statement on the situation.

“Carlson’s last program was Friday, April 21st, Fox News said, meaning Carlson did not get a chance to sign off to his viewers. The news comes days after Fox News reached a historic 11th-hour settlement with Dominion Voting Systems for over $787 million,” Axios reported.

“FOX News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways. We thank him for his service to the network as a host and prior to that as a contributor. Mr. Carlson’s last program was Friday, April 21st. Fox News Tonight will air live at 8 PM/ET starting this evening as an interim show helmed by rotating FOX News personalities until a new host is named,” Fox News said in a statement.

Fox News made headlines last week when it announced that host Dan Bongino had parted ways with the news network in what is a stunner to his fans and fans of the top-rated cable giant.

“Folks, regretfully, last week was my last show on Fox News on the Fox News Channel,” the host said on his podcast Thursday Variety reported. “It’s tough. It’s tough to say that. You know, I’ve been there doing hits and working there for ten years…so the show ending was tough. And I want you to know it’s not some big conspiracy. I promise you. There’s no acrimony. This wasn’t some WWE brawl that happened. We just couldn’t come to terms on an extension.”

“We thank Dan for his contributions and wish him success in his future endeavors,” the network said.

It said it will air ‘Lawrence Jones Cross Country” in place of Bongino’s show until the network announces a new schedule.

Insiders Reveal Who At Fox News Was Behind Tucker Carlson Firing

Bill O'Reilly's take on why Tucker Carlson was fired
JOHN SEXTON 3:30 PM on April 25, 2023

Bill O'Reilly's take on why Tucker Carlson was fired

In this clip from Chris Cuomo’s show last night, Bill O’Reilly says he did some actual reporting to find out exactly what happened with the firing of Tucker Carlson. According to O’Reilly, the decision was made Sunday night and the show’s staff found out about it Monday morning as they were working to prepare Monday night’s show. In short, this was not something that had been under discussion for very long.

O’Reilly claims that while the Dominion lawsuit did not lead to this directly, it did put Fox News into a mode where it was thinking ahead about other lawsuits that were coming. One of those is a forthcoming lawsuit by Smartmatic, another election-connected company who are looking for even more money than Dominion.

Dominion Election System’s historic settlement with Fox News “set down a marker and it’s a marker that we think we should be exceeding,” Smartmatic lawyer Erik Connolly told CNN Thursday. Connolly called Dominion’s agreement “a good start” but “not the right finishing point.” Smartmatic sued Fox News in 2021 for $2.7 billion—more than $1 billion more than what Dominion claimed in damages.

Smartmatic already sees Dominion’s settlement with Fox News, which was brokered in the final hours before the start of trial, as an advantage in their case. Fox agreed to pay Dominion what is believed to be the largest dollar amount in a defamation case settlement, and acknowledged in a statement that it spread 2020 election lies on air. Smartmatic is making similar claims against Fox.

So that’s the next big case coming and there’s no reason to think it won’t be another historic loss for Fox News. But then O’Reilly mentioned two more lawsuits which involve Tucker Carlson more directly.

“You have two individual lawsuits, actually one filed and one that may be filed and that was the key,” O’Reilly said. He continued, “So, one of Tucker Carlson’s producers apparently taped a whole bunch of stuff. Her lawyer went in to the Fox attorneys and said unless you pay so and so some money, we’re going to sue you. And Fox said we’re not paying so they filed suit in New York City. And they have the tapes and those tapes may be released to the public.”

O’Reilly wasn’t specific about who filed that lawsuit but it’s almost certainly the one that David mentioned yesterday involving former producer Abby Grossberg. Briefly, the LA Times reported that Grossman claims she “was bullied and subjected to antisemitic comments.” She and another Carlson producer were fired and her firing was for “disclosing privileged company information.”

Putting that together with what O’Reilly is saying, it sounds like she has some tapes of Carlson and/or his staff making comments they wouldn’t want aired on television, including antisemitic comments. When Fox found out she’d taken that material they fired her rather than paying her. And as O’Reilly says, that means these tapes will probably get leaked and reported on in connection with her lawsuit sometime soon.

It reminds me of this infamous leaked tape of MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell having a complete meltdown over some construction taking place during his taping. The audience was never supposed to see that meltdown but someone put together the off-air moments and leaked it. In that case, O’Donnell and the network were embarrassed but it wasn’t enough to get him fired. Presumably the tapes Grossberg has are worse.

The other possible lawsuit cited by O’Reilly (and also cited by the LA Times) was from Ray Epps. In a recent interview Epps claimed that Tucker Carlson ruined his life by accusing him of being an undercover FBI agent provocateur. O’Reilly sees that as another “massive lawsuit” waiting to happen but this one aimed directly at Carlson.

So given those three lawsuits (two filed and one probably coming soon) the Board of Directors is now expecting lawsuits from shareholders who are angry about all the money Fox is paying out because of what some of the hosts are saying on air. “Faced with that, the Board of Directors said ‘we gotta start cleaning this up.’ So Dan Bongino was the first domino to fall…and then Carlson because of the impending litigation was harpooned this morning,” O’Reilly said.

Bottom line, O’Reilly is adding a bit more detail to the outlines of what the LA Times was reporting yesterday.

The clip ends with O’Reilly predicting Fox will need to cut salaries and reduce staff size to make up for the huge amount of money they are going to be paying out for these lawsuits. In other words, there will be a lot more firings to come. “This is bad for Fox News. There’s nothing good about this,” O’Reilly concluded. Here’s his full appearance on Cuomo’s show.

A former GOP strategist says Tucker Carlson would be a huge threat to Trump if the ex-Fox News host were to run for president in 2024
Cheryl Teh | Business Insider
Wed, April 26, 2023 at 1:26 AM MDT

Tucker Carlson would be a real threat to Trump if he were to run in 2024, says ex GOP strategist Rick Wilson.

Carlson would be able to launch an "online fundraising juggernaut" with ease, Wilson said.

Carlson's celebrity and money would also work in his favor, Wilson added.

Tucker Carlson would pose a credible threat to former president Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP presidential race if he were to run, says a former GOP strategist.

Carlson has not hinted at having presidential ambitions, but onetime GOP strategist Rick Wilson says Carlson — who until Monday was one of Fox News' top anchors — has what it takes to put up a good fight against Trump for the Republican nomination.

"What if he runs? He's rich enough. He'd instantly have an online fundraising juggernaut second only to Trump, and perhaps surpassing him," Wilson, who served as a strategist for former President George H.W. Bush, tweeted on Tuesday. Wilson was a field director on Bush's 1988 campaign, then worked for former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani as a campaign advisor in the early 2000s, per Ballotpedia. Wilson is now a staunch Trump critic and one of the cofounders of The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump super PAC.

Wilson added that if Carlson were to run, he would be the "only Republican who presents a material danger to Donald Trump in a primary" — surpassing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is currently Trump's biggest rival in the GOP.

"Celebrity, money, mental acuity, cynicism, pro-Putin isolationism, and an overt love of authoritarianism are a pretty strong secret sauce for the MAGA base," Wilson wrote.

"Celebrity got Trump the WH," Wilson added. "It could certainly do the same for Tucker. And spare me your 'That could never happen. Even Trump's GOP would never vote for a former TV host pushing white replacement theory.' That's PRECISELY who they'd vote for."

Carlson, a firebrand hose on Fox News, was on Monday ousted from his primetime spot. He has hired Bryan Freedman — a powerhouse lawyer known for getting multimillion-dollar payouts for clients — to negotiate his exit from the network.

Trump said he was "shocked" when he heard of the host's ouster at Fox.

Trump and Carlson text each other often and are the closest they've ever been, The New York Times reported this week. In private, Carlson has previously bashed Trump, as shown by text messages that were in March made public as part of Dominion Voting Systems' defamation lawsuit against Fox.

Carlson has not said what his next steps post-Fox News will be. Freedman did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment sent outside regular business hours.

Meh, I don't see how any of this will be negative for Carlson. He'll wind up in a better position than before.

Thanks for the welcome. Getting used to navigating around, but at least the learning curve is generous. LOL

Yeah, it's a smidge different here than the forum you came from. But pretty much easy to navigate.

We only have the light background in use here, and I have no plans to change that.

If more people show up from TheLair, I may switch to a darker theme, but the Investment Games section really only looks good on this theme.

Although, it was a happy surprise to me that CNN dumped that purseswinger Don Lemon. He just might wind up at MSNBC.

As long as he doesn't land at OAN or Newsmax.

Only problem with using 2 different phones here is that i hafta log in when i use a different phone than the last time i was here...to be expected cuz it's 2 different browsers
...Anyway
... I read somewhere that Carlson was to join the cast on The View ..and it was on the internet so i know it's true Smile

My guess is that it's a setting that your phone provides, just like larger text might be.

Carlson would never join The View - but he might have enough money to buy ABC.

Unless Oprah were to outbid him for it.

Carlson, Lemon Are Hiring Same Powerhouse Lawyer After Terminations
Martin Walsh, April 25, 2023

Fox News host Tucker Carlson and CNN anchor Don Lemon, both of whom were fired on Monday, are hiring the same high-profile lawyer to handle their departures.

“Neither host has announced a lawsuit or dispute against their employers. But the litigator they’ve retained — Bryan Freedman — has a record of helping TV hosts secure millions from their old networks. Former CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter reported that both Carlson and Lemon are retaining Freedman’s services, while The New York Times also wrote that Lemon had hired Freedman,” Business Insider reported.

“Messy media breakups are a staple for Freedman, famed for aggressively representing a laundry list of the entertainment world’s most prominent figures. His clients include Vin Diesel, Quentin Tarantino, and Mariah Carey. Freedman previously worked to help former host Megyn Kelly secure around $30 million from NBC News after she parted ways with the network in 2019. Kelly was fired halfway through her three-year contract worth $69 million, but NBC agreed to pay her the remainder of her original salary,” the outlet added.

“In 2021, Freedman also represented longtime “The Bachelor” host Chris Harrison, who reached a $10 million exit settlement with ABC after facing backlash over his comments on the show, per Variety,” Insider continued. “Chris Cuomo, the anchor fired by CNN in December 2021, also hired Freedman in his ongoing wrongful termination suit against the network for $125 million.”

Fox News announced on Monday that the network had “parted ways” with Carlson and it ignited a firestorm on social media.

Soon after news of Carlson’s firing, reports shed light on who made the final decision to cut ties with the top host.

Don Lemon was fired from CNN on Monday and immediately released a statement on Twitter.

“I was informed this morning by my agent that I have been terminated by CNN. I am stunned. After 17 years at CNN, I would have thought someone in management would have had the decency to tell me directly. At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network. It is clear that there are some larger issues at play,” Lemon said.

But CNN public relations disputed the former host’s description of events.

“Don Lemon’s statement about this morning’s events is inaccurate. He was offered an opportunity to meet with management but instead released a statement on Twitter,” it said.
