Trump giving $35 million to aid human trafficking survivors By DARLENE SUPERVILLE, AP, today
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is awarding more than $35 million in Justice Department grants to organizations that provide safe housing for survivors of human trafficking.
The grants are being announced Tuesday at a White House event attended by Attorney General William Barr, presidential adviser Ivanka Trump, other administration officials, survivors of human trafficking and organizations that serve them.
The $35 million in Housing Assistance Grants for Victims of Human Trafficking is being provided by the Office for Victims of Crime within the Justice Department’s Office of Justice Programs to provide housing and services to human trafficking survivors.
The grants will be shared by 73 organizations in 33 states to provide anywhere from six to 24 months of transitional or short-term housing assistance to survivors, including to pay rent, utilities or related expenses, such as a security deposit, the White House said.
The money can also be used to help victims find permanent housing, get a job and receive occupational training and counseling.
Ivanka Trump, a daughter of President Donald Trump, said the coronavirus pandemic has made safe and supportive housing for survivors more important than ever. She said many survivors had to live with their traffickers during stay-at-home orders around the country.
“The administration has heard these concerns and is responding by awarding leading nonprofit organizations the necessary funding to ensure that survivors have a stable place to live,” Ivanka Trump said in a statement.
Among organizations sharing the grants are Camillus House Inc. in Miami, Alternatives for Girls in Detroit and the Jordan Community Resource Center in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
President Trump has sought to elevate human trafficking since taking office. In January, he appointed a special adviser for the issue.
His daughter has also made human trafficking one of her issue areas.
During a trip to Atlanta in January to visit nonprofit groups that help victims, Ivanka Trump compared trafficking to “modern-day slavery” and said the White House is committed to ending it.

A Florida man, David T. Hines, was accused last month of obtaining $4 million in paycheck protection funding and buying a 2020 Lamborghini Huracán, valued at $318,000.
Federal authorities said Price received two loans — one for $900,000 and another for $700,000 — for two businesses that he said had "numerous" employees and "significant" payroll expenses, according to his applications.
The businesses had neither, authorities said, and Price is alleged to have spent the money on a Lamborghini Urus, a Rolex watch and a 2020 Ford F-350 pickup. He is also accused of spending thousands of dollars at strip clubs and nightclubs in Houston, the statement said.

Feds seizing allegedly laundered assets from Ukrainian oligarch Giuliani asked for Biden dirt
On Thursday, The Daily Beast reported that the Justice Department is moving to seize assets from a Ukrainian oligarch who was involved in the scandal that led to President Donald Trump’s impeachment — and who is now accused of laundering billions of dollars in stolen money from a bank he once owned.
“A complaint filed by the Justice Department that seeks to seize commercial properties in Texas and Kentucky from Ihor Kolomoisky and his business partner, Gennadiy Boholiubov, alleges that the pair moved billions through various companies to ‘thoroughly disguise their nature, source, ownership, and control,'” reported Madeline Charbonneau.
Kolomoisky was involved with Rudy Giuliani’s plan to dig up dirt on the Biden family’s business transactions in Ukraine, which ultimately led to Trump trying to coerce the Ukrainian president with military aid. Giuliani had asked him for assistance, but he reportedly refused and called it a “clear conspiracy” against Trump’s political rival.

Trump’s postmaster general caught making cash off of post office contracts.
CNN.com outed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy for continuing to hold a stake in a company that the United States Postal Service uses as a contractor.
Reporting Wednesday, CNN revealed that DeJoy’s investment in XPO Logistics is a serious conflict of interest.
“Outside experts who spoke to CNN were shocked that ethics officials at the postal service approved this arrangement, which allows DeJoy to keep at least $30 million in XPO holdings,” said the report. “Raising further alarms.
On the same day in June that DeJoy divested large amounts of Amazon shares, he purchased stock options giving him the right to buy new shares of Amazon at a price much lower than their current market price, according to the disclosures.”
That could mean a different conflict of interest given President Donald Trump can’t stand Amazon because it’s own by Jeff Bezos, who also owns the Washington Post, a newspaper that Trump can’t stand because it fact-checks his lies.
In 2018, Trump tried to increase prices for Amazon to ship packages. The U.S. Treasury also got a loan deal with the USPS to increase high shipping prices on Americans from the company known for being a “service” to Americans. It’s been a pet project of Trump’s since he took office.
“DeJoy already faces bipartisan criticism for implementing disruptive changes after taking over the USPS on June 15, including eliminating overtime for many workers,” CNN noted. “Democrats also claim he is intentionally slowing down mail delivery to sabotage absentee voting in the November election — a charge he denies.”
In a Washington Post report Wednesday, a postal worker in Michigan explained that every election year ballots are treated as “first-class mail” giving it a priority to ensure that votes are couned.
Now the post office is treating it “like bulk-rate mail,” where it won’t have the same priority.
There was also the matter of DeJoy firing a slew of staff in key positions in the Postal Service late on a Friday night.
Advocates are fearful that this is the beginning of an attempt to steal the election by Trump and his allies.

Pentagon Reportedly to Launch UFO Task Force.
The Pentagon is forming a new task force to investigate UFOs that have been observed by U.S. military aircraft, reports say, in response to longstanding concerns about unidentified aircraft that have been observed flying over military bases. Determining whether the crafts are operated by troublesome Earthlings or curious extraterrestrials will be a central concern of the task force.
Earlier this year, the Pentagon released three short videos showing U.S. aircraft encountering such phenomena, while service members were recorded reacting in awe at how quickly the objects were moving.
Donald Trump in April called the footage a “hell of a video” and told Reuters he wondered “if it’s real.” The Pentagon had previously studied recordings of aerial encounters with unknown objects as part of a program that ran from 2007 to 2012.

Paralyzed Jacob Blake is handcuffed to his hospital bed but police won’t reveal the charges
Jacob Blake’s father said that his paralyzed son is handcuffed to his bed, despite the fact that Blake can’t stand or go anywhere. To make matters worse, Blake hasn’t been charged with a crime as of yet, so his family isn’t sure why he’s handcuffed.
The Chicago Sun-Times explained that the Kenosha Police Department, Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office and Wisconsin Department of Justice all didn’t respond to questions or give any information about the charges against Blake.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A pilot landing an American Airlines jet at Los Angeles International Airport reported a bizarre and close encounter Sunday night.
The pilot called air traffic control to report a man wearing a jetpack flying near the plane.
Tower tapes released detail the pilot's exchange.
Pilot: "Tower, American 1997, we just passed a guy in a jetpack."
Tower: "American 1997, OK, thank you. Were they off to your left or right side?"
Pilot: "Off the left side, maybe 300 yards or so, about our altitude."
The jet was flying at an altitude of 3,000 feet at the time of the encounter.
The tower then warned other approaching flights to be on the lookout for a man in the jetpack.
The incident is under investigation.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Offers to Pay to Reopen Closed Polling Places Across the South
Self-described “fanatic about voting” Arnold Schwarzenegger moved to put his considerable money where his mouth is on Wednesday with an implied offer to fund the reopening of thousands of polling places in states that have shut them down.
The former California governor was responding to a 2019 Reuters article which noted an enormous number of polling place closures that have occurred since the 2013 Supreme Court decision, Shelby County v. Holder.
In a partisan split, the court’s conservative majority eliminated a crucial portion of the 1965 Voting Rights Act requiring states with a history of racist voter suppression to prove that any changes to election laws weren’t discriminatory.
Since then, there has been a wave of so-called reforms in former Jim Crow states that critics say are deliberately intended to disenfranchise nonwhite voters, along with the closure of more than 1200 polling stations.
As Reuters noted in 2019, these states deny any racist intent and instead justify the closures, which seem to hit poor and minority districts hardest, for a variety of reasons, most often budget issues.
Which brings us to Schwarzenegger, who on Wednesday tweeted: “I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I’m a fanatic about voting. Most people call closing polls voter suppression. Some say it is “budgetary.” What if I made it easy & solved the budgetary issue? How much would it cost to reopen polling places?”
“This is a serious question,” he continued. “Is closing polling stations about making it harder for minorities to vote, or is it because of budgets? If you say it’s because of your budget, let’s talk.”
While it’s unclear if anyone will take him up on this offer, the ex-Governator has pretty deep pockets. His current wealth is not known, but estimates from 2011 put his personal fortune north of $400 million.
