Judge extends deadline for Wisconsin ballots postmarked by Election Day
The big picture: Judges in four presidential swing states — Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and now Wisconsin — have ruled that ballots can be counted if they are postmarked by Nov. 2 (or Nov. 3 in Michigan), Business Insider's Grace Panetta notes.
A federal judge in Wisconsin on Monday extended the state's deadline for counting absentee ballots until up to six days after the Nov. 3 election if they are postmarked by Election Day, AP reports.
Both sides expect a close election in the battleground state, which President Trump won by fewer than 23,000 votes in 2016.

Trump vows to keep the Navy SEALs from being accepting of women sailors
The leader of the free world complained about the United States Navy on Tuesday is his latest attack on those who choose to devote their lives to helping their country with public service.
Trump’s latest crusade is a female sailors, which is a new rallying call for the far-right.
“The U.S. Navy SEALs and the Navy Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen (SWCC) recently changed their ethos and creed statements to reflect a gender-neutral presentation of the elite Navy outfits, doing away with gendered terms like ‘brotherhood,'” the American Military News reports. “One change to the SEAL ethos was to alter a sentence in the first paragraph of the ethos to say, ‘Common citizens with uncommon desire to succeed’ instead of the original, ‘A common man with uncommon desire to succeed.'”
And then Donald Trump piled on, vowing to reverse the upgrade. ''I will be overturning this ridiculous order immediately!'' |

Notorious GOP operatives charged with felonies for trying to trick people out of mail-in voting in Michigan.
On Thursday, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced a pair of infamous Republican tricksters have been charged with multiple felonies for a series of scam robocalls designed to trick voters out of voting by mail.
Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, who are known for a number of failed schemes including paying off a woman to accuse Dr. Anthony Fauci of sexual assault, are charged with voter intimidation, election conspiracy, and two computer crimes.
Their robocall, targeted to Detroit and other Democratic-heavy urban areas, allegedly warned voters — falsely — that a vote by mail would give the voter’s personal information to police, debt collectors, and public health officials administering mandatory vaccines.
“The calls were made in late August and went out to nearly 12,000 residents with phone numbers from the 313 area code,” said the AG press release.
“During its investigation, Nessel’s office communicated with attorneys general offices in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois, all of which reported similar robocalls being made to residents in their states who live in urban areas with significant minority populations. It’s believed around 85,000 calls were made nationally, though an exact breakdown of the numbers of calls to each city or state are not available.”
The recordings falsely told recipients that mail-in ballots could be used to "track down old warrants," "collect outstanding debt" and "track people for mandatory vaccines."
"Stay safe and beware of vote by mail," the calls concluded. |

‘Stuck on stupid’: Russel Honoré profanely rips Donald Trump for the ‘total BS’ coming from his White House
Retired three-star Army General Russel L. Honoré blasted President Donald Trump’s administration on Monday.
Honoré posted a link to a new story titled, “Controversial EPA decision gives Oklahoma governor regulatory power over tribal lands.”
“The Environmental Protection Agency has granted Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt’s (R) request to re-establish regulatory control over environmental issues on certain tribal lands, TYT reported Monday after obtaining a letter from EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler that outlines the decision,” the report noted. “Earlier this year, the Supreme Court’s decision in McGirt v. Oklahoma determined the Creek Nation’s reservation in eastern Oklahoma “had not been disestablished by Congress and remained Indian country under federal law,” which would impede the state from implementing regulatory programs in that area. But a 2005 statute specific to Oklahoma, Wheeler’s letter explains, requires the EPA administrator to approve a request from the state to implement the regulatory program ‘in areas of the state that are in Indian country, without any further demonstration of authority by the state,’ should that request meet certain requirements.”
Honoré said the decision was “total bullshit.”

Des Moines Register Editorial Board:
"Throw the bums out. Every one of them."
[Putting party above country] has led Republicans down a treacherous path of steadfast loyalty to a president who has coddled dictators, demonized immigrants, wavered on denouncing white supremacists, run the White House like a family business, routinely ignored science and witnessed over 215,000 Americans die in a pandemic on his watch. And the worst may be yet to come, since he has not committed to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses the election.
That's why in this particular election every Republican incumbent should be voted out of office and every open seat should be awarded to the Democratic candidate.
The Democratic candidates for Congress in Iowa have much to offer. But make no mistake: Elected Republicans' actions have been so poisonous that removing them from power is as important a goal as sending thoughtful public servants to Washington.
The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate has had too little time to assist Americans struggling from the effects of a pandemic. Yet it has found plenty of energy to pour into assuring perpetual conservative control of the Supreme Court.
For today’s Republicans, the needs of the party supersede those of the nation.
And now we’ve reached the point where the party appears willing to abet a president in nullifying an election.
Which leads them to conclude, before they move on to discussion of individual candidate endorsements, with this thought:
An overwhelming repudiation at the polls might drive home to Republicans how far they have strayed from the principles of their past.
To help steer them back, throw the bums out. Every one of them.

| New Jersey Mayor Caught Opening Food Boxes For The Poor, Replacing Trump Letter With His Own
October 24, 2020 Baxter Dmitry News, US New Jersey Mayor Derek Armstead was caught opening government food boxes for the poor, removing letters from President Trump and replacing the letters with his own. The Democrat mayor wants his constituents to believe the negative media portrayal of President Trump and his administration, while trying to claim the food boxes came from his own office. This is not only dishonest, it’s also unsanitary. But he is a Democrat. New Jersey Globe reported: A letter from President Donald Trump that accompanied U.S. Department of Agriculture fresh food boxes for Linden was replaced by one from the city’s Democratic mayor, Derek Armstead. Food boxes were opened by local public works department employees.  Trump’s letter was removed and a letter from Armstead was added. “The original letter in these boxes was removed, and the mayor had city employees put in his letter on work time,” said Councilwoman Gretchen Hickey, a Democrat and an Armstead political rival. Armstead acknowledged that his message was added to the box, offering local residents the impression to recipients that the food came from him. “Whenever I do a delivery, I always add a letter from the mayor,” Armstead told  the New Jersey Globe. Trump says his administration has delivered 100 million Farmers to Families food boxes since May as part of a program to send nutritious food to families in need. Included in the box is a letter from Trump on White House stationary that includes guidance to reduce the risk of being infected with COVID-19. |

RWNJ Jacob Wohl Indicted on Felony Charges for Robocall Scheme in Ohio.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – A grand jury in Cleveland on Tuesday indicted right-wing political hoaxers Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman with felony charges connected to a multi-state robocall campaign that prosecutors say was meant to scare voters in urban areas with large minority populations out of voting by mail in the Nov. 3 presidential election.
Wohl, 22, of Riverside, California, and Burman, 54, of Arlington, Virginia, are indicted on eight counts of telecommunications fraud and seven counts of bribery in connection with more than 8,000 calls that were placed to residents of Cleveland and East Cleveland.
The charges stem from a group called Project 1599, which Wohl and Burkman founded. The caller told potential voters that police and debt-collection companies could use personal information that voters put on their mail-in ballots to track down people who have outstanding warrants and credit-card debt. The claim is not true.

| Trump’s new favorite X-ray doctor is retweeting demands Dr. Fauci debate him.
President Donald J. Trump selected radiologist Scott William Atlas as his newest health care policy advisor on the White House Coronavirus Task Force this past August after a public fallout with immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci. The two scholars could not be any more different on their approach to mitigating the pandemic, which has so far killed over 227,000 Americans.
“If we get a vaccination campaign, and by the second or third quarter of 2021 we have vaccinated a substantial proportion of the people, I think it will be easily by the end of 2021, and perhaps even into the next year, before we start having some semblances of normality,” Fauci said recently during a University of Melbourne panel.
He added, “When we were trying to open up the economy again, or open up the country … and I was very much involved with Dr. Deborah Birx and putting together these guidelines, which were a gateway of Phase 1, Phase 2 – to tell you how you can gradually safely and prudently open up the country.” Fauci said. “If everybody had done that uniformly, I don’t think we would be in the position we’re in right now.”
On the flip-side, Atlas tweeted Wednesday, “Even with France and Germany lockdowns, schools (lowest risk environments) stay open. Yet, in the US, only 35% of schools are open in-person. Critical for working class, low income, & one-parent families #OpenTheSchools.”
Atlas retweeted the idea of a debate against Fauci with a “no comment.” The person tweeting appeared to be talking about Dr. Atlas and Dr. Fauci debating each other, but Atlas isn’t an epidemiologist nor is he a professor or medical professional for Stanford University. __ He’s a fellow at the Hoover Institute which is located on the Stanford campus.
Dr. Fauci, by contrast, does more than merely serve on the coronavirus task force. He’s likely busy while working on the pandemic at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) as one of the world’s leading experts on infectious diseases. Dr. Atlas likely has more time on his hands between Fox News appearances. |

| Hillary Clinton joins Electoral College 4 years after it cost her the presidency: 'Pretty sure I'll get to vote for Joe' Joel Shannon, USA TODAY • October 28, 2020
Hillary Clinton won the popular vote but lost the 2016 presidential election because of the Electoral College. This year, she is slated to be a participant in that system.
The Electoral College is comprised of 538 delegates: People who cast the votes that formally elect the president. It's a system that tends to give smaller states a larger voice in the process of electing the president, and one that Clinton has publicly opposed in the past.
This year, Clinton is listed by New York State Board of Elections as one of 29 Democratic electors for the state. If Joe Biden wins the popular vote in New York, Clinton and the 28 other electors will vote for him to be the next president.
"Pretty sure I'll get to vote for Joe and Kamala in New York ... I can't wait," Clinton said in an interview aired on SiriusXM Progress. The Democratic candidate for president has carried New York for the past eight presidential elections, according to 270towin.com.
The Electoral College can pick a president who got fewer votes: Here's why and how.
New York has taken steps to move away from the Electoral College: The state is part of the National Popular Vote Compact. If enough states sign on to this effort, the Electoral College will chose the candidate who wins the national popular vote.
Earlier this week, Clinton weighed in on the 2020 election, saying the thought of a second term with President Donald Trump makes her "literally sick to my stomach."
"I can't entertain the idea of him winning, so let's just preface it by that," Clinton told Kara Swisher, as a guest on Swisher's New York Times Opinion podcast.
"It makes me literally sick to my stomach to think that we'd have four more years of this abuse and destruction of our institutions, and damaging of our norms and our values, and lessening of our leadership ... The list goes on," she said. |

Walmart pulls guns from sales floors, citing civil unrest.
Walmart plans to remove guns and ammunition from its sales floors in the US following unrest in Philadelphia this week, a spokeswoman said Thursday.
“We have seen some isolated civil unrest and as we have done on several occasions over the last few years, we have moved our firearms and ammunition off the sales floor as a precaution for the safety of our associates and customers,” a Walmart spokeswoman said. “These items do remain available for purchase by customers.”
The move comes after Philadelphia on Wednesday announced a nighttime curfew following two nights of unrest over the police killing of Walter Wallace, who became the latest Black person to die at the hands of law enforcement.
Thousands of people have taken to Philadelphia’s streets, with looting and violence breaking out, since police on Monday shot dead Wallace, who was carrying a knife. Wallace’s family said he had mental health problems.
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said there would be no curfew Thursday night, but “we encourage residents to remain home, unless travel is necessary.”

Older Americans believe ‘fake news’ on social media at overwhelming rates and there’s a scientific reason for it:
An Oxford study published in July found that the baby boomer generation was showing signs of cognitive decline earlier than previous generations — and it wasn’t all related to dementia.
“Older adults consume more misinformation and are more likely to share misinformation,” Briony Swire-Thompson, a senior research scientist at Northeastern University who specializes in social media networks, told The Huffington Post.
In fact, social media users over the age of 65 shared more fake news than any other age group and seven times more than users between the ages of 18 and 29.
President Donald J. Trump has so far “dedicated almost half of his reelection campaign budget to Facebook ads many of which include blatant misinformation to users over 65 years old.”
One-in-five Americans will be over the age of 65 by 2030. Researchers say that by 2060 that same ratio will be one-in-four. Older adults reportedly obtained the majority of their news from social media — jumping from 8 percent to 40 percent over the past 10 years.
“Facebook, one of America’s primary delivery devices for partisan, misleading and outright false information, is growing fastest among people over 50. Meanwhile, the percentage of teens reporting Facebook use fell from 71% in 2014 to 51% in 2018.”
Data derived from a 2012 study found that participants were more likely to believe that “the first windmills were built in Persia” if the statement appeared alongside a photo of windmills than if it appeared on a black background. This statement was not exclusive to the elderly population; the pictorial phenomenon affected young people roughly equally.
Another study showed that older adults appear to have a harder time distinguishing authentic news from sponsored content, spotting manipulated images and separating factual information from opinion.
In a 2019 survey, just 18% of Facebook users over 65 understood that the social media network used an algorithm to organize their feeds and deliver recommendations.
“Suddenly my dad who had worked his whole life had nothing to do,” David, who preferred to not publish his last name, said. “So this 52-year-old man who had never used a computer gets on YouTube. That’s when the algorithms got to work on him.”
David’s father began posting conspiracy theory videos ranging in everything from Bigfoot to political news like Hillary Clinton and her so-called pedophile ring, George Soros and his global network of secret banks, and so on.
“A lot of it was blatantly anti-Semitic,” David said. “We’re Jewish, but I don’t think my dad is knowledgeable enough to understand the dog whistles.”
David and his father fought over text messages and Facebook Messenger before they stopped speaking altogether. Two years later, David’s father sent him an email with a video of a former self-described liberal who had turned conservative. David said he felt like his father has “been indoctrinated into a cult.”
Social media amplifies what researchers call the “illusory truth effect” — meaning the more times you hear something, the more you believe it to be true. For example, if you see the same statistic on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, you’ll probably believe it, whether it is actually true or not.
“In an ideal world, we would prevent people from seeing misinformation in the first place,” Brashier said.

Republican staffer caught on tape attacking a woman’s car — but has not yet been arrested.
In 2017, Republican Greg Gianforte bodyslammed a reporter on the eve of a special election in Montana.
Gianforte lied to investigators, but Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin refused to arrest Gianforte for obstruction of justice or malicious intimidate, allowing him to instead plead guilty to a misdemeanor. Gootkin had previously donated to Gianforte, but refused to recuse himself from the case.
Now Gianforte is in another scandal as people wonder if violence by a Republican is once again be excused by the powers that be in Bozeman.
“Now one of Gianforte’s top campaign staffers in Gianforte’s bid for Montana’s governorship has allegedly committed a violent incident of his own, attacking a parked car, according to a police report,” The Daily Beast reported Monday.
“An incident report filed by the Montana police says that Daniel Duffey, Gianforte’s political director and spokesman, bashed a parked car next to his pickup truck on Oct. 26, repeatedly slamming his truck’s door into the other vehicle. Duffey ‘opened his car door and struck the side of Vehicle 2 several times, causing visible damage to Vehicle 2,’ the report from the Bozeman Police Department reads.”
“Andre Zollars, a Montana resident whose daughter owns the damaged car, told The Daily Beast that the incident occurred outside a sushi restaurant in Bozeman on Oct. 26.
Zollars said Duffey’s truck was parked over the line separating parking spaces, but that her daughter was able to fit into the parking space anyway,” The Beast reported.
“When her daughter returned to the car later, however, she discovered that her vehicle had been damaged. Zollars claims Duffey also keyed her daughter’s car, although that isn’t mentioned in the police report. The car received more than $1,600 worth of damage during the incident, according to an mechanic’s estimate Zollars provided to The Daily Beast.”
Duffy has not been criminally charged in the case. Gianforte is running for governor against current Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney. |
