Officials appeal for the public's help in locating whoever carved the word TRUMP in a Manatee's back.

Florida’s iconic and beloved manatees are not immune to the cruelty of Trumpists. In the Homosassa River North of Tampa, a manatee was found with injuries to its back. The word Trump was etched into the slow-moving sea cow.

The Center For Biological Diversity has offered a reward leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.— The Center for Biological Diversity today announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to a conviction for the cruel and illegal mutilation of a threatened Florida manatee in north Florida’s Homosassa River. Someone carved the word TRUMP into the animal’s back.

“It’s heartbreaking that this manatee was subjected to this vile, criminal act,” said Jaclyn Lopez, Florida director at the Center. “It’s clear that whoever harmed this defenseless, gentle giant is capable of doing grave violence and needs to be apprehended immediately.”

Officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission began investigating the crime after the manatee was discovered Sunday with serious scarring in the form of the president’s name. Anyone with information can call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation hotline at (888) 404-3922.

Protected under the Endangered Species Act since 1963, manatees are slow-moving plant eaters with no natural enemies. Most years boat mortality makes up about 20% of known human-caused deaths.

Harassment of a manatee is a federal criminal offense punishable by a $50,000 fine and up to one year in prison.

Facebook DELETES account of Iran’s Press TV news network with 4 million subscribers
12 Jan, 2021

Social media giant Facebook has shut down an account run by Press TV, a major Iranian English-language media outlet. The network said it was provided with no warning or explanation ahead of the deletion.

The network’s page, boasting a four-million-strong following, vanished from Facebook on Tuesday afternoon.

Facebook deletes Press TV's main page without any warning or explanation #BreakingNews#PressTV#facebookpic.twitter.com/j4aDg2BlOp
— Press TV (@PressTV) January 12, 2021

“In a notification upon taking down the page early on Tuesday, the US-based social media giant said the decision was ‘final,’ adding that it could not provide additional information for ‘safety and security reasons,’” Press TV has said, condemning the “attack” by the social media giant.

Facebook’s hostile move towards Press TV has coincided with new allegations raised against Tehran by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington on Tuesday, Pompeo claimed the Al-Qaeda terrorist group had established a new “home base” in the country, without providing any hard evidence to back up that bold allegation.

However, Press TV has also speculated the deletion might be part of Big Tech’s ongoing purge of Trump supporters, stating that the “attack coincides with Press TV’s coverage of shocking post-election violence in the US.” This was apparently in reference to the mass deletion of social media accounts in the aftermath of last week’s Capitol Hill riot.

The drive has already resulted in Twitter deleting the accounts of US President Donald Trump and many of his supporters, including high-profile individuals such as former national security advisor General Michael Flynn and lawyer Sidney Powell. On Monday, Twitter also revealed it had suspended more than 70,000 accounts “that were primarily dedicated to sharing QAnon content.”

YouTube takes down Trump video, bans new uploads for a week.

ouTube said Tuesday that it has taken down newly posted video content from President Trump for violating its policies against inciting violence.

In addition, it has assessed a "strike" against the account, which means the president can't upload new videos or livestream to the account for a minimum of 7 days.

Why it matters: YouTube has been under pressure to take action after Twitter permanently suspended Trump's account and Facebook instituted a 2-week ban.

"After careful review, and in light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence, we removed new content uploaded to the Donald J. Trump channel and issued a strike for violating our policies for inciting violence," YouTube said in a statement to Axios. "As a result, in accordance with our long-standing strikes system, the channel is now prevented from uploading new videos or livestreams for a minimum of seven days—which may be extended."

YouTube is also suspending comments throughout Trump's channel, citing the risk of violence. It has limited comments on other accounts in the past, but typically for child safety issues.

Between the lines: YouTube would not identify the offending video.

Several videos were uploaded to President Trump's YouTube account today, most from his visit to Texas, addressing issues ranging from the border wall to law enforcement to the events of last week.

Context: Although YouTube has taken down videos from the president before — including last week's removal of a Trump video following the Capitol riot — those previous takedowns came during an election grace period, which meant they didn't come with the "strike" or the seven-day upload ban.

Twitter locks account of congresswoman who live-tweeted about Nancy Pelosi's location during riot.

A Republican congresswoman who supports QAnon had her account locked by Twitter this week after she live-tweeted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's location during last week's deadly Capitol Hill insurrection.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) revealed on Instagram that Twitter had prevented her from posting until Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.

It was not immediately clear why Twitter had shut down the lawmaker's account.

Twitter users called for Boebert to be jailed last week after she used the platform to disclose details of Pelosi's security while a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol.

Following the failed coup, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) suggested that Boebert had committed a crime.

"Like any citizen who has committed a crime, Lauren Boebert has the right to remain silent," Swalwell tweeted. "I suggest that she use it."

Alabama senator suggests delaying the inauguration —
not realizing the date is in the Constitution.

On Thursday, WKRG reported that Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) suggested
pushing back the inauguration date for President-elect Joe Biden during an interview
in which he also claimed that impeaching outgoing President Donald Trump
"makes no sense."

The problem? That's unconstitutional.

"Tuberville ... questioned the timing of the inauguration on January 20," said the report.
"'We probably could have had a swearing-in and inauguration later
after we got this virus behind us a little bit.
Again, we're talking about Washington, D.C.,' Tuberville said.
[u0However, the 20th Amendment to the Constitution requires that the
inauguration and swearing-in of a new President take place on January 20th.[u/]

Tuberville, a former college football coach who defeated Democratic Sen. Doug Jones
in November, has attracted attention for flubbing basic civics information.

In another interview, he wrongly claimed that America fought in World War II
"to free Europe of socialism,"
and
was unable to correctly identify the three branches of government.

"The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January
and the terms of their successors shall then begin," the 20th Amendment reads.

FBI investigating foreign bitcoin payments
moving to alt-right before Capitol riot.

As conservative extremists have been pushed off
of major networks, they have increasing turned
to bitcoin as a way to receive money.
This trend intensified greatly around the fatal 2017
"Unite the Right" rally that terrorized Charlottesville, Virginia.

Some bitcoin payments may reveal the sources of funding
for the January 6th insurrection at the
U.S. Capitol.

"The FBI is investigating whether foreign governments, organizations or individuals provided financial support to extremists who helped plan and execute the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, one current and one former FBI official told NBC News.

As part of the investigation, the bureau is examining payments of $500,000 in bitcoin, apparently by a French national, to key figures and groups in the alt-right before the riot, the sources said. Those payments were documented and posted on the web this week by a company that analyzes cryptocurrency transfers.

Payments of bitcoin, a cryptocurrency, can be traced because they are documented on a public ledger," NBC News correspondent Ken Dilanian reported Saturday.

"On Dec. 8, Chainalysis reported, the donor sent 28.15 BTC worth about $522,000 at the time of transfer to 22 separate addresses, many of which belong to far-right activists."

"The Chainalysis blog post, first highlighted by Yahoo News, said far-right podcaster Nick Fuentes received the most money, 13.5 BTC worth approximately $250,000."

Iran’s Supreme Leader suspended from Twitter after possible Trump threat
Keydra Manns
Fri, January 22, 2021, 1:27 PM

They are linking the account to the office of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Twitter has banned an account for allegedly making death threats toward Donald Trump.

A tweet surfaced on Thursday of a drone flying overhead of the former president that included a message mentioning revenge. The AP reports Twitter has banned the account potentially linked to an Iranian supreme leader because it goes against its company policy.

Twitter is calling the account @khamenei_site fake because it posted similar tweets as state-run media. They are linking the account to the office of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The caption of the tweet said “Revenge is certain” in Farsi.

The account also included a link to Khamenei’s website on which the same image has appeared.

Khamenei’s office apparently has more than one account but they did not post the image of Trump and the drone. They remain active.

There is potential bad blood between the former president and Khamenei after a U.S. drone struck and killed Iranian Revolutionary Guard General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad. It is approximately one year after his death and Khamenei committed to revenge in a speech last month against whoever called for the hit. He did not mention Trump by name.

“Revenge will certainly happen at the right time,” said Khamenei in the speech.

Twitter said the account violates its, “manipulation and spam policy.”

It appears as if Twitter is clearing house of accounts that do not follow its policies as they recently banned Trump.

As reported by theGrio, Twitter banned Trump’s account on Jan. 8 citing “the risk of further incitement of violence.”

The social platform has been under growing pressure to take further action against Trump following the deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Twitter initially suspended Trump’s account for 12 hours after he posted a video that repeated false claims about election fraud and praised the rioters who stormed the Capitol.

Twitter’s move deprives Trump of a potent tool he has used to communicate directly with the American people for more than a decade. He has used Twitter to announce policy changes, challenge opponents, insult enemies, praise his allies (and himself), and to spread misinformation.

Violence in West Africa's Sahel displaces record 2 million people, U.N. says
Fri, January 22, 2021, 7:25 AM

GENEVA (Reuters) - The number of people fleeing violence in West Africa's Sahel region has quadrupled in the past two years, with 2 million now displaced in their own countries, the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR said on Friday.

Militants linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State have expanded their reach in the semi-arid region on the edge of the Sahara, stoking ethnic conflict in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger and forcing whole communities to flee their homes.

More than half of those displaced within their own country are in Burkina Faso, where many are forced to sleep outside and do not have enough water, UNHCR spokesman Boris Cheshirkov said at a briefing in Geneva.

"The communities hosting the displaced have reached a breaking point," he said. "The humanitarian response is dangerously overstretched, and UNHCR is urging the international community to redouble its support for the region."

The Sahel also has more than 850,000 refugees who have fled across international borders, mainly from Mali.

CPAC gathering in turmoil as speakers cancel
and sponsors flee.

According to a report from Politico, the annual conservative gathering known as CPAC is having problems this year as sponsors drop out.

Normally held in Washington D.C. which allowed
the conference to attract an all-star list of Republican lawmaker speakers -- including now-former President Donald Trump -- the conference was moved to Florida to be closer to Trump and because of Florida's lax COVID restrictions.

That has people nervous about the Feb. 25-28 event.

"President Donald Trump's election loss has created hurdles around programming and guest booking. Stringent coronavirus guidelines in Maryland have pushed the conference outside of the Washington, D.C. area for the first time in nearly 50 years," Politico reports.

"Previous sponsors aren't yet committed or have decided to forgo sponsorship entirely due to changes to the event's format or disappointment in the return on their investment last year. And the president that attendees adored so much may not show up to the event at all."

The report notes that Trump hasn't committed
to attending this year -- which could help boost attendance -- and Vice President Mike Pence is uncertain this year after being the subject of Trump's supporter's ire for certifying the 2020 election for President Joe Biden.

As for CPAC's sponsorship issues, Politico previously reported that sponsors having second thoughts and that the annual conference was having difficulties, which led to American Conservative Union General Counsel David Safavian to accuse Politico of "'tortious interference with business relationships' and attempting 'to cancel both CPAC and the American Conservative Union itself.'"

"As for this year's sponsors, some of whom spent
as much as $250,000 in past years for exclusive benefits and branding opportunities, several said they were still evaluating the benefits or had decided not to sponsor at all due to mediocre returns on the investment or changes to the conference structure," the report states.

"Laura Merriott, president of the anti-abortion nonprofit Save Unborn Life, said her group 'didn't get much response [from] donors last time' after paying between $1,000-$3,000 for a sponsorship and creating a pop-up exhibition," Politico reports with Merriott admitting,
"It doesn't pay for itself when you go and set up and you don't get" enough new donors to "make it worthwhile."

As for past sponsors, "the Washington Examiner, Republican National Committee, Turning Point USA, Heartland Institute and Save our States said they had yet to make a decision as of last week about sponsoring again."

10 Billionaires Made Enough Money During The Pandemic To Vaccinate The Entire World
They could save millions from poverty with what’s left over, according to a new Oxfam report on inequality and the coronavirus.

The coronavirus recession is over, if you ask the billionaires of the world. According to a report released Monday by Oxfam, the top 1,000 billionaires collectively lost about 30% of their wealth when COVID-19 restrictions stalled global economies in March. By the end of November, they’d made it all back.

For the world’s richest, it took less than 10 months to recover the financial losses caused by the pandemic. For the world’s poorest, the report estimated, it will take more than 10 years.

“While a wealthy minority have amassed vast fortunes before and during the pandemic, the majority of the world’s population have been struggling to survive on poverty wages and without access to decent health care or education,” Paul O’Brien, vice president of Oxfam America, told HuffPost.
“Today’s levels of extreme wealth concentration are not sustainable. Billionaires are a sign of economic sickness, not health. They are the symptom of a broken economy.”

The pandemic threatens to undo the progress of more than two decades of declining global poverty. The World Bank has estimated that more than 200 million people may sink into poverty as a result of COVID-19’s economic effects — in low-income countries and in rich ones, including the United States.

Startlingly, the Oxfam report found that the cost to prevent people from falling into a life lived on less than $5.50 a day would be far less than the profits made by the world’s wealthiest during the coronavirus crisis.

Jeff Bezos could have personally paid each of Amazon’s 876,000 employees a one-off $105,000 bonus ... and still be as wealthy as he was at the beginning of the pandemic.

According to Oxfam’s calculation — based on poverty data from the World Bank and wealth data from Credit Suisse and the Forbes Billionaires list — the world’s 10 richest people, including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Tesla founder Elon Musk, added $540 billion to their collective net worth in the last three quarters of 2020.
If they handed over around $80 billion, they could keep those imperiled millions above the poverty line for a year while economies rebuild.

With the remainder of their 2020 profits, these 10 billionaires could pay for both rounds of the COVID-19 vaccine for every person on Earth and still come out ahead.
(Oxfam used World Health Organization data to estimate a cost of around $9 per dose, a total expenditure of $141.2 billion for the world’s 7.8 billion inhabitants.)

The report paints a stark portrait of the divide between CEOs at the top and laborers at the bottom, many of whom have continued to work in dangerous circumstances, without the option to stay home to avoid the virus.

In the last 40 years, executive pay has increased by 1,000% while worker pay has budged less than 12%.

Jeff Bezos to step down as CEO of Amazon this year.

Jeff Bezos said Tuesday he would give up his role as chief executive of Amazon later this year as the tech and e-commerce giant reported a surge in profit and revenue in the holiday quarter.

The company said Andy Jassy, who heads Amazon Web Services, would take over as CEO in the third quarter.

The announcement came as Amazon reported a blowout holiday quarter with profits more than doubling to $7.2 billion and revenue jumping 44 percent to $125.6 billion.

Bezos, who has become the world's richest person based on his stake in Amazon, said he will transition to the role of executive chair in the third quarter to hand over the CEO role to Jassy.

"Amazon is what it is because of invention," Bezos said in a statement.

"Right now I see Amazon at its most inventive ever, making it an optimal time for this transition."

Jassy joined Amazon as a marketing manager in 1997 and in 2003 founded AWS, the web division of the company which has been one of the most profitable but least-known units of the tech colossus.

US Mint Unable to Meet Surging Demand For Gold, Silver Bullion Coins
Reuters Feb 2, 2021

NEW YORK—The United States Mint said on Tuesday it was unable to meet surging demand for its gold and silver bullion coins in 2020 and through January, due partly to pandemic-driven demand and plant capacity issues.

Sales of U.S. gold bullion coins rose 258 percent in 2020 while silver coin demand was up 28 percent, the U.S. Mint said Tuesday. Heavy buying has continued in 2021, it said, squeezing supplies, which had already been tight as the coronavirus affected production.

A social media-driven buying spree lifted silver futures to an eight-year high on Monday, but dealers in the market for coins were already grappling with a supply shortage and shipping delays before that rally.

The Mint, a division of the U.S. Treasury, had limited distribution of its silver coins to suppliers as it is currently changing the designs for its American Eagle Gold and Silver Bullion Coins.

“There was going to be a backlog in the silver bullion supply chain that rendered Silver Eagles more scarce either way,” said Everett Millman at Gainesville Coins in Florida. He expected delays until mid-March for the most popular products.

“The silver coins and silver bars that are available have acquired significantly higher premia,” he added.

In January, 220,500 American Eagle gold bullion coins were sold, up 290 percent from 56,500 a year earlier, the Mint said.

For this year, the U.S. Mint has a limited window to produce its current gold and silver coins, with redesigned coins expected to debut in the summer. It is limiting distribution of its gold, silver and platinum coins to specific dealers because of heavy demand, and a limited number of suppliers of metals, it said in a statement.

David Hogg to launch pillow company to compete with MyPillow.

Gun control activist and survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting David Hogg announced on Thursday that he would be launching his own pillow company to compete with MyPillow.

Hogg said he would be creating the company along with William LeGate, a progressive tech entrepreneur, to directly compete with conservative MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, a staunch pro-Trump supporter who has baselessly spread voter fraud allegations.

"This pillow fight just got very real,” Hogg tweeted Thursday, alluding to Lindell's forthcoming "progressive competition."

He added that LeGate "and I can and will run a better business and make a better product all with more happy staff than Mike the pillow guy while creating US based Union jobs and helping people. This pillow fight is just getting started.”

Hogg said that his role in the future company would be advisory so he can concentrate on school. He currently attends Harvard University.

In another tweet, Hogg said the company would feature union-made products, support progressive causes and “not attempt a white supremacist overthrow of the United States government.”

Lindell's Twitter account was permanently taken down this week after he posted several tweets criticizing Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and doubling down on his claims of voter fraud.

Rachel Maddow Sells Manhattan Apartment for $2.3 Million
Andrea Park
Fri, February 5, 2021, 2:56 PM

After more than a decade of ownership, Rachel Maddow’s trendy West Village apartment sold in just a matter of weeks, the New York Post reports. The MSNBC host listed the home for $2.35 million in October and, the following month, found a buyer who brought the price down just a smidge to $2.34 million; the sale is currently under contract.

Maddow and her partner, Susan Mikula, purchased the home in 2010 from none other than REM frontman Michael Stipe. At the time, they snagged the fourth-story unit—located in a co-op building that dates back to 1898 and used to be a paper warehouse—for a comparative steal at $1.25 million.

The apartment holds two bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms, with the powder room and the main bedroom’s en suite full bath outfitted in Calacatta marble countertops, floors, and walls. The rest of the 2,650-square-foot unit comprises an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space, with professional-grade appliances, a soapstone-framed wood-burning fireplace, and a surprising number of large windows for a Manhattan apartment. Though the home has been updated with new wood flooring, custom cabinetry, and chic light fixtures, it still includes the original structure’s wooden support columns, exposed brick walls, and high ceilings.

Co-op membership in the building requires a monthly maintenance fee of more than $3,500, but amenities include a laundry room, bike storage, a live-in superintendent, and a doorman-attended lobby.
