Trump Says GOP Rival Could Be His Running Mate: ‘I Have To Like A Guy Like That’

Donald Trump appears to have identified someone he would consider as a running mate should he win the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, and it just happens to be someone who is running against him for the nod.

The 45th president said Tuesday he has “to like a guy like” Vivek Ramaswamy, a business entrepreneur who has been rising in the polls and has refrained from being critical of Trump, The Hill reported.

“Well, I think he’s great. Look, anybody that said I’m the best president in a generation … I have to like a guy like that,” Trump told Glenn Beck in a call-in interview on Blaze TV, in reference to comments Ramaswamy made during the first GOP primary debate last week.

“He’s a smart guy. He’s a young guy. He’s got a lot of talent. He’s a very, very, very intelligent person,” Trump continued. “He’s got good energy, and he could be in some form of something. I tell ya, I think he’d be very good. I think he’s really distinguished himself.”

He went on to say that the entrepreneur has become “a little bit controversial” as he has gained more notoriety.

The Hill added:

Ramaswamy, the 38-year-old entrepreneur, was among the most prominent candidates on the debate stage last week in Milwaukee. He has gained significant media attention as his poll numbers have ticked up and as he has made various inflammatory and controversial statements.

He has said he would cede parts of Ukraine to Russia to end the war in Ukraine; he has suggested the U.S. should cut off support to Israel; and he has faced backlash for incendiary remarks about Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), comparing the Black lawmaker to “modern grand wizards” of the Ku Klux Klan.

According to RealClearPolitics’ average of polls, Ramaswamy has risen to third place behind Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Rumors have swirled for months who Trump is considering as a running mate, with early reports claiming he is leaning towards naming a woman as his choice for VP.

Trump recently appeared on Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, where they spoke about the Republican primary and possible vice presidential picks. Bartiromo asked Trump if he had considered picking South Carolina GOP Sen. Tim Scott, who is currently running for president, as a running mate.

Trump was indirect with his response, but he did compliment Scott as a candidate by saying he “could see Tim doing something” with the administration. Trump also praised several other 2024 GOP hopefuls, calling them “good potential Cabinet members,” creating a list of possible picks if he wins 2024.

Last month, Trump spoke about running mate possibilities — including a lifelong Democrat.

“No, but people have suggested it. I read the same things that you do.

“There are a lot of people suggesting it, there’s no question about that,” Trump added. “I’ve known him over the years. He’s a smart guy and well-intentioned. I really believe he’s very well-intentioned.”

Speculation has been rife for months regarding who former President Donald Trump will pick as his 2024 running mate. While nothing official has been announced, Trump has entertained certain names, including a lifelong Democrat.

Trump recently reacted to potentially teaming up with long-shot 2024 Democratic presidential contender Robert F. Kennedy Jr., singing his praises as “a smart guy.”

One report speculated that Trump could choose one of these women: South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, or Arizona Republican firebrand Kari Lake.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem was not convinced following the 2022 midterm elections that Trump would be the best candidate to lead the Republican Party into the 2024 presidential elections, but she appears to have changed her tune.

Noem endorsed Trump during a campaign rally in her state last week, “fueling speculation about the role the Republican governor may play in his third bid for the White House.”

Once considered as a potential 2024 candidate herself, Noem made clear earlier this year she would not be running and would instead focus her attention and energies on her state.

However, in the months since, she appears to be raising her profile nationally ahead of next year’s presidential contest and has even sparked conversations about becoming Trump’s running mate.



As for whether she would be Trump’s running mate, she told Fox News host Sean Hannity recently: “Of course, I would consider it.”

“When [Noem’s] name comes up in conversation, it’s been positive,” one source close to Trump told CNN. “She’s been loyal to him. She’s eloquent, she defends him but doesn’t steal the spotlight.”

Noem has harbored political aspirations for quite some time, CNN noted. In 2016, she underwent vetting for the position of Trump’s secretary of Agriculture but ultimately decided against pursuing it.

In 2022, while seeking re-election, she strategically ran digital campaign advertisements on Facebook in crucial early-voting states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, which hold significant sway for presidential candidates.

Having served as a state legislator and represented South Dakota in the U.S. House for four terms, Noem contemplated a bid for the U.S. Senate in 2022, especially when it seemed that GOP Sen. John Thune might not seek another term, as per two knowledgeable Republicans.

Currently, Republican operatives believe that Noem is angling for a path to potentially serving in a Trump administration, whether it be as a vice president or a member of the Cabinet.

“I think she’s angling to keep all her options open. With everything being so fluid on the national stage, she has been very good about pushing her state as an example during COVID and all of these national hot-button issues. She’s kept her state at the forefront,” Republican strategist Matt Langston told the outlet.

“She’s got a bright future. She’s sticking with Trump, which is smart at this stage,” he added.

Speculation has been rampant about who former President Donald Trump would pick to be his vice president if he were to secure the Republican nomination for president.

But unlike President Joe Biden, the former president will not give a definite answer on picking a female vice president, though he said he likes the idea.

“Mr. President, have you thought about a potential running mate if you were to win the nomination?” NBC “Meet The Press” anchor Kristen Welker said to the former president in an interview on Sunday.

“I like not to think too much about that. You always do a little bit, but I really don’t think it’s time. I want to win. And, you know, it’s very interesting about running mates. When you get down to a vice president, they said, ‘Nobody’s ever made that kind of a difference. It’s still about the person that’s going to be president.’ But it’s an important decision,” he said.

“Are you leaning toward a woman?” the anchor said.

“I like the concept, but we’re going to pick the best person. But I do like the concept, yes,” he said.

“A lot of people noticed when Governor Noem endorsed you, there were Trump/Noem signs. Do you have your eye on her?” the anchor said.

“I do. I think she’s fantastic. She’s been a great governor. She gave me a very full-throated endorsement, a beautiful endorsement, actually. And, you know, it’s been a very good state for me. And certainly, she’d be one of the people I’d consider, or for something else, maybe. But we have a lot of people. We have a lot of great people in the Republican Party,” he said.

Former President Donald Trump picked up a major endorsement Friday night during a rally in South Dakota, as Gov. Kristi Noem publicly announced she would back him for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination.

“Tonight, Mr. President, my message is clear: It is an honor to have you with us in South Dakota,” Noem said in front of a crowd of thousands in Rapid City, home to the Mount Rushmore National Monument. “You made America great again once. Let’s do it again.”

At that, Trump took the stage and briefly embraced the GOP governor as “TRUMP NOEM 2024” briefly flashed on a huge screen above the stage.

“Kristi is a warrior for American values,” Trump said, according to The New York Times.

After complimenting her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming one of the first states to reopen and stay open, Trump added: “I get endorsements, some good, some bad. Some don’t mean anything. Hers means a lot.”

It should be noted that just eight of the country’s 26 Republican governors have picked a side in the 2024 race. Besides Noem, Govs. Mike Dunleavy of Alaska, Jim Justice of West Virginia, and Henry McMaster of South Carolina have backed Trump. Two others — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum — are running against him.

In an interview with Fox News, Noem said she would “consider” becoming Trump’s running mate.

“She’s remained in contact and on good terms with the former president, according to sources familiar with their interactions. Though Noem didn’t attend last month’s first Republican presidential debate, ads touting her state’s low taxes and job openings aired during it and since then on Fox News,” CNN reported.

Noem also has another connection to Trump – Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s former campaign manager and confidante who has been an adviser to Noem since 2020.
