Rubio says Florida canvasser was assaulted for being Republican — but there's a lot more to the story.
On Monday, Sen. Marco Rubio took to Twitter to condemn what he described as an act of political violence targeted against a Republican volunteer for his campaign.
"Last night one of our canvassers wearing my T-shirt and a Desantis hat was brutally attacked by 4 animals who told him Republicans weren’t allowed in their neighborhood in #Hialeah #Florida He suffered internal bleeding, a broken jaw & will need facial reconstructive surgery," he wrote.
But according to The Daily Beast, the police report of the incident doesn't quite line up with Rubio's version of events.
For starters, there is currently no evidence that the attack in Hialeah — a predominantly Cuban-American city in Miami-Dade County that is overwhelmingly Republican — was actually politically motivated.
"Javier Jesus Lopez, a 22-year-old warehouse worker who lives down the street from where the altercation took place, now faces a felony charge of aggravated battery. A phone number listed for Lopez in the incident report — which The Daily Beast has redacted from the document — went straight to voicemail Monday evening," reported Justin Rohrlich.
"In an email on Monday, Sgt. Jose Torres of the Hialeah PD told The Daily Beast that the case is 'open and active,' and that investigators 'soon' expect to determine a motive. When Local 10 News asked Torres if the violence was political, he also said the investigation was ongoing__ but as of Monday afternoon there was ]u]'no indication that is the case.'"[/u]
Furthermore, the victim in question, Christopher Monzon, is not an ordinary Republican canvasser.
He is a notorious neo-Nazi activist, known by counterprotesters as the "Cuban Confederate," who has marched with the white supremacist League of the South and with neo-Nazi Richard Spencer at the 2017 Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. "That same year, Monzon was arrested for attempting to assault protesters in Hollywood, Florida with a Confederate flag= he was the lone counterprotester at a gathering organized to push for streets named after Confederate generals to be renamed."
"Monzon was unable to be reached for comment by The Daily Beast," noted the report. "Journalists from the Miami New Times attempted to interview Monzon on Monday in his room at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, with permission from the facility’s communications department, but said they were_ ** blocked from entering by members of the Vice City Proud Boys, the militant right-wing group’s Miami-Dade chapter."

Florida mom denies assault of GOP canvasser was political: 'My son has never voted'.
On Tuesday, the Miami Herald reported that Diana Rosa Lopez, the mother of the young man accused of brutally assaulting a Republican canvasser and former white supremacist activist in Hialeah, was motivated by politics. That attack was initially publicized as a political hit on Twitter by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio.
"Lopez, a registered Republican, says it wasn’t about politics — despite a viral tweet from Rubio claiming that his canvasser was attacked because he worked for the GOP," reported Sarah Blaskey and Nicholas Nehamas. "'My son doesn’t know anything about politics. He likes fishing,' Lopez told the Miami Herald in a Tuesday interview at her house. 'My son has never voted.'
Lopez said she is a private person scared of losing her job for speaking publicly. She said she votes only in presidential elections. Rubio’s reelection campaign meant little to her until the Republican called her son an 'animal' on Twitter."
"Her son, Javier Jesus Lopez, 25, was arrested Sunday on charges of aggravated battery after a fight with Christopher Monzon, 27, a former candidate for the Hialeah City Council with his own history of violent arrest," said the report.
"Photos show Monzon being taken to the hospital wearing a bloody Rubio for Senate campaign t-shirt. The photos, shared by the senator on Twitter, show Monzon on a stretcher with cuts on his face and swelling around his eyes. Another person involved has not been identified, police say."
Rubio had also previously claimed that the attack had been carried out by four people. But only Lopez has been arrested, and police confirm they currently have no evidence the attack was politically motivated.
Monzon has been known by activists as the "Cuban Confederate" for his former affiliation with the white supremacist League of the South. He previously participated in the 2017 "Unite the Right" neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia that ended with a counterprotester being murdered in a vehicle-ramming attack. He was also arrested later that year after charging into a crowd of protesters demanding the city of Hollywood, Florida rename streets bearing the names of Confederate generals, shouting, "You are a cancer on the face of the earth! All Jews are."
"Diana Lopez said she refuses to bail her son out of jail, and wants him to take responsibility for what he did wrong, which to her was getting involved in a needless fight between two hot-headed young men," said the report. 'He deserves whatever he deserves for getting in a fight,' Diana Lopez said. But she was clear: 'This has nothing to do with politics.'"

Well, Obi-- The thing is__ Rubio says he was a canvasser .. It is not a fact, just he said.. So--There is an investigation.. So far it stands;
There is currently no evidence that the attack in Hialeah — a predominantly Cuban-American city in Miami-Dade County that is overwhelmingly Republican — was actually politically motivated.
Monday, Sgt. Jose Torres of the Hialeah PD that the case is 'open and active,' and that investigators 'soon' expect to determine a motive. When Local 10 News asked Torres if the violence was political, he also said the investigation was ongoing__ but as of Monday afternoon there was____ 'no indication that is the case.'" And__ Furthermore, the victim in question, Christopher Monzon, is not an ordinary Republican canvasser. (((((so there could completely be a different reason for the fight...its being investigated)))

On Wednesday, the Miami Herald reported that Christopher Monzon, the far-right former white supremacist who was brutally assaulted while canvassing for Republicans in the heavily Cuban-
American city of Hialeah, didn't actually tell police he was attacked for being a Republican canvasser — until Florida Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted out, with no evidence, that he was.
"The Republican Party canvasser who was brutally beaten in Hialeah on Sunday did not say the attack was politically motivated when police officers first interviewed him that evening, according to a police spokesman." "An initial incident report said nothing about politics. But on Monday morning, after talking to the victim’s father, Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted that the canvasser was attacked 'by 4 animals who told him Republicans weren’t allowed in their neighborhood.' This claim is already unusual given that Hialeah is a heavily Republican community.
"When Hialeah police re-interviewed the canvasser, Christopher Monzon, hours after the Rubio tweet, he told them he did believe politics played a role in his beating," said the report. "In a sworn statement Monday afternoon, Monzon — said one of his attackers told him that 'he could not pass through because he was a Republican,' a police report released late Tuesday shows." Hialeah is a heavily Republican community.
Police initially made clear they had no evidence politics played a role in the attack on Morzon, who once went by the name "the Cuban Confederate,"

Assailant encouraged GOP canvasser to ‘do your job’ — raising questions about Rubio’s account

The man accused of a politically motivated attack on a Republican Party canvasser in Hialeah last month actually encouraged the canvasser to keep handing out fliers just moments before the fight started, according to cellphone videos obtained by the Miami Herald — raising more questions about whether the canvasser was attacked for being a Republican, as both he and Sen. Marco Rubio have repeatedly state “It’s okay, bro, we’re telling you, do your job,” Jonathan Casanova, 27, can be heard saying to canvasser Christopher Monzon, 27, who was handing out Rubio fliers in an east Hialeah neighborhood on Oct. 23.
The videos — which are not contiguous and do not capture the actual beating — show an escalating argument between Monzon and his two alleged assailants, Casanova and Javier Jesus Lopez, 25, outside Lopez’s home. Lopez can be heard in the footage telling Monzon to “keep walking” while also threatening to “rush” the canvasser. At one point, Lopez threatens to shoot Monzon.
Although Casanova mentions the canvasser’s Rubio t-shirt and says “look what the U.S. Senate brings,” the video does not show him saying Monzon was unwelcome in the neighborhood because he was a Republican, as Monzon later told police.
“Just do your job, bro,” Casanova says repeatedly as he stands with his body angled away from Monzon. Pointing him down the street, Casanova told Monzon, __ “You’re looking too hard.” ((((at his girlfriend)))) Standing between Monzon and Lopez, Casanova assured Lopez’s mother that he had the situation under control. But soon the two young men started taunting Monzon — who was walking away — for being a “chicken.”
And a second video, taken moments later, shows the canvasser returning to square off. While Rubio tweeted that the attack was politically motivated, a defense lawyer for Casanova told the Herald that wasn’t true, despite his client mentioning the Rubio shirt in one of the videos. The attorney, Joseph Chambrot, said the fight actually began because Monzon was staring too intently at Casanova’s girlfriend, who was seated inside her boyfriend’s car. “This has nothing to do with Sen. Rubio ... or the Republican Party,” Chambrot said. “This has absolutely nothing to do with politics.
Too much testosterone in the room.” Both Lopez and Casanova have criminal records, including for violent conduct. The videos were provided to the Herald by defense lawyers. It’s not clear if other cellphone videos of the incident exist. Hialeah is a Republican stronghold.
State records show that Casanova registered to vote with no party affiliation and Lopez has never been registered. His mother is a registered Republican. Rubio’s campaign has said the senator learned the attack was politically motivated from Monzon’s father, Rey Cedeno.
Rubio contacted Cedeno the morning after the attack after hearing the father on a call-in show on Radio Mambí, according to campaign spokesperson Elizabeth Gregory. Although Cedeno never explicitly said the attack was political, Mambí host Rosa Peña immediately blamed paid “anarchist elements and leftists” for the attack. But reached by phone late Friday, Cedeno seemed to question whether the attack on his son was politically motivated after all.
“I think, personally, they just chose that subject about Marco Rubio just to pick a fight,” Cedeno said after watching the videos. “I personally don’t think these guys are political. But they definitely did mention the name.”
After this article was published, Cedeno said he showed the videos to Monzon, who said he had been minding his own business and wasn’t even looking at the parked vehicle when the two assailants started to heckle him about his work for the Republican Party.
“He said before that [first] video was shot, they started telling him they did not want Republicans on that sidewalk,” Cedeno said. Both Lopez and Casanova have been charged with aggravated battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police say they kicked and beat Monzon while he was lying on the ground after Lopez rushed him. Prosecutors charged them with the deadly weapon count because Casanova allegedly told two of his German shepherds to attack Monzon after the fight broke out.
‘YOU WANT TO FIGHT?’
The longest of the three cellphone videos shows Monzon engaged in a heated discussion with Casanova and Lopez outside Lopez’s home. “Look at this, look at this. Marco Rubio. Look what he’s representing,” Casanova said, as he pointed and laughed at Monzon, who was wearing a Rubio t-shirt and a Gov. Ron DeSantis hat. “I just don’t like being talked to that way,” interjected Monzon, who was handing out political fliers. “You don’t like being talked to, keep walking,” said Lopez from off-camera. __“We keep telling you, it’s okay, bro, we’re telling you, do your job,” Casanova continued. “Go do your job, bro. That’s all we’re doing. Go do your job. You’re looking too hard, bro.” '
The video then shows Lopez saying “I will rush you” and “You want to fight? I’ll let you do one-on-one.” Lopez also appeared to say that he would shoot Monzon. At that point, Monzon started to walk away before Lopez and Casanova began taunting him for being “scared” and he turned back toward the two men, as that first video in the sequence ends. Hialeah resident Mayra Jimenez hugs Christopher Monzon, who addressed a small crowd of supporters at the Miami Springs Circle Park on Sunday, October 30, 2022. Carl Juste cjuste@miamiherald.com Casanova’s attorney. Chambrot, said the footage shows that the fight was a case of “mutual combatants” — young men jawing at each other and squaring off in a show of toughness. While Monzon did initially walk away, he then returned “in a fighting stance,” the lawyer said. “[Monzon] is walking away.
His pride is offended and he comes back and now he wants to fight to save his honor. It’s mutual,” Chambrot said.
A second, shorter video shows Monzon walking toward the men. “He squared up,” one of the men comments in the video. “This is why you don’t bring p**** a** n***** into Hialeah,” said Casanova’s girlfriend, who has not been named.
The final video shows Lopez’s mother trying to separate her son and Monzon with fliers scattered on the ground. Monzon is shown shuffling back and forth with his hands raised like a boxer. “That’s it,” the girlfriend shouts. “That’s it, bro.”
