Published 1 hour ago AOC removed from union-backed progressive party ballot line in New York By Morgan Phillips | Fox News
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was booted from the progressive union-backed Working Families Party (WFP) ballot line by a Queens judge, a blow to her potentially competitive Democratic primary fight.
The freshman lawmaker was removed from the primary ballot after receiving only 13 signatures from members of the progressive group that has dubbed itself the "Tea Party of the left" -- two short of what she needed to get on the ballot.
Now, she won’t be on the WFP ballot line in the November general election, either, said Martin O'Connor, attorney for AOC's Democrat opponent Michelle Caruso-Cabrera.
“AOC has hurt working people of the Bronx and Queens with her votes and creates disunity within our party," Caruso-Cabrera told the New York Daily News. "No wonder why pro-union forces don’t want her, and neither do our neighborhoods.”
Caruso-Cabrera said the leftist firebrand is out of touch with the needs of her blue-collar district.
The Working Families Party is an independent political party that cross-endorses progressive candidates through New York's fusion voting system -- which allows endorsement across ballot lines -- to press Democrats to the left and extract concessions without being dismissed by voters as a spoiler.
Under fusion voting, multiple political parties can list the same candidate, pooling the votes for that candidate.
The WFP endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in the 2016 election, and he described Working Families as “the closest thing" to “my vision of democratic socialism.”
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo had lowered the number of signatures needed to qualify for the primary ballot to 15. Ocasio-Cortez submitted 14 signatures, but one was thrown out because the voter was a registered Democrat.
New York Supreme Court Judge Phillip Hom ruled that Ocasio-Cortez should be removed from the WFP ballot, where she would have run unopposed.
Leaders of the Working Families Party vowed they would still campaign for Ocasio-Cortez even after her removal from the ballot.
“We believe the Congresswoman is the leader her district and this country needs," said Sochie Nnaemeka, director of the state party, who decried petition challenges amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Ocasio-Cortez and Caruso-Cabrera, a former CNBC anchor, are at the front of the race for the Democrat primary in New York’s 14th Congressional District spanning through Queens and the Bronx, trailed by a number of lesser-known candidates. Eight Republicans are also vying for Ocasio-Cortez's seat, but whoever wins the Democrat primary is essentially assured victory come November in the deep-blue district.
Having a spot on the Working Families Party ballot would have offered Ocasio-Cortez a glimmer of hope should she suffer a defeat from Caruso-Cabrera.
New York's Democrat presidential primaries were canceled due to coronavirus, but local primaries will go on as scheduled on June 23.

AOC’s ‘Twitch’ amendment, to limit US military ads, fails: reports “War is not a game,” the congresswoman wrote, opposing military ads on a site that's popular with online gamers By Dom Calicchio | Fox News
In a 292-126 vote Thursday night, the U.S. House rejected an amendment by U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., that would have placed limits on U.S. military recruitment ads, according to a report.
The more than 2-to-1 defeat of the Democrat’s plan means the military may continue posting recruitment ads on Twitch, a streaming platform popular with online gamers.
Earlier Thursday on Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez made an appeal to convince lawmakers to back her proposal.
“War is not a game,” she wrote. “Twitch is a popular platform for children FAR under the age of military recruitment rules. We should not conflate military service with ‘shoot-em-up’ style games and contests.
“The Marines pulled out of Twitch for a reason,” she added. It’s time to follow their lead.”
The Army, Navy, Air Force and National Guard all participate in sponsorships and partnerships in the world of so-called “e-sports,” The ESports Observer reported.
But the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard do not. In May, Military.com cited a 2019 Marine Corps recruiting document that was submitted to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services.
“The national marketing brand strategy does not include future plans to establish eSports teams or create branded games,” the Marine Corps wrote. “This is due in part to the belief that the brand and issues associated with combat are too serious to be ‘gamified’ in a responsible manner.”
The same report noted, however, that in January the Marines launched an Academic Excellence Program in association with Esports Stadium in Arlington, Texas, that offers free game time to high-achieving high school and college students.
Marine Corps recruiters have also attended esports tournaments – signaling at least some contact with an activity that attracts 72 percent of men and 49 percent of women between ages 18 and 29, Military.com reported.
After Thursday’s vote, Ocasio-Cortez returned to Twitter to put a positive spin on the outcome.
“The good news: a majority of the Dem party supported this amendment,” she wrote. “That’s really a solid start for this being the first time this issue has been brought before Congress.”
Thirteen House members did not vote on the amendment, The ESports Observer reported.

Ocasio-Cortez Declines to Promise Support for Pelosi as Speaker, Will Back ‘Most Progressive Candidate’ Mairead McArdle, National Review • October 25, 2020
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Sunday hedged on whether she would support Nancy Pelosi as House speaker again, saying she will support the “most progressive” candidate.
“If Speaker Pelosi runs again, as she just indicated she will if the Democrats keep the House, will you support her?” CNN’s Jake Tapper asked the freshman congresswoman during an interview on CNN.
“Again, I want to make sure that we win the House. I do believe that we will, but it’s critically important that we are supporting Democrats in tight swing races, making sure that not only all of them come back but that we grow our majority. I believe that we have to see those races as they come, see what candidates are there,” Ocasio-Cortez responded.
“I am committed to making sure that we have the most progressive candidate there. But, if Speaker Pelosi is that most progressive candidate, then I will be supporting her,” she concluded.
The New York progressive’s remarks came just moments after Pelosi confirmed on CNN that she intends to run for speaker of the House should Democrats retain their majority in the chamber.
Last year, Pelosi clashed with Ocasio-Cortez and three other freshmen progressive congresswomen after the four voted against an emergency border-aid bill brought to the floor by leadership, saying they wanted to see more protections for migrants in the measure.
“All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” Pelosi said after the bill passed in July last year. “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people, and that’s how many votes they got.”
Ocasio-Cortez then took issue with Pelosi’s minimizing the influence of the four representatives.
“It got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful,” she said at the time. “The explicit singling out of newly elected women of color.”
However, the two had an amicable meeting and united shortly afterwards on a resolution condemning President Trump’s remarks about the congresswomen as racist.
