Local high school student dies after suffering ‘medical emergency’ during athletic event

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Desert Oasis High School student died Thursday after suffering a “medical emergency” during an athletic event, according to the school’s principal.
“Staff immediately began providing medical aid and continued until paramedics arrived,” Principal Ian Salzman said in an email sent to students’ families. “It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that the student passed away.”
Salzman urged parents to monitor their children for any signs of grief or behavioral changes and to get help if needed. He said CCSD’s Crisis Response Team would be available for anyone who needs their services.
“The school and the entire district mourn the loss of this young life,” he wrote in the email.

Angela shared on Instagram over the weekend that Victoria died on Dec. 26, revealing the news in a lengthy post that featured an image of her sister smiling next to sunflowers. In it, she asked her followers to give her family "grace and respect during this most difficult time."

Surfer Márcio Freire, who gained fame in ‘Mad Dogs’ documentary, dies at 47
January 6, 2023 1:27pm Famed Brazilian surfer Márcio Freire died Thursday while riding waves off the central coast of Portugal, officials said.
Freire, 47, — who appeared with two other pioneering Brazilian surfers in “Mad Dogs,” a 2016 documentary about their attempt to conquer the giant wave “Jaws” in Hawaii — suffered the fatal accident in Nazaré, authorities said.
He had been tow-in surfing, a technique in which surfers are pulled into giant waves with the use of watercraft, according to a statement from the Portuguese National Maritime Authority.
“A 47-year-old man of Brazilian nationality died this afternoon after falling while practicing surfing in Praia do Norte,” the authority said in a statement.
“The rescuers found that the victim was in cardio-respiratory arrest, immediately starting resuscitation maneuvers on the sand. After several attempts, it was not possible to reverse the situation,” it added.

18-year-old collapses and dies during basketball game
Nassau, Bahamas An 18-year-old woman collapsed and died on the basketball court at a park in Masons Addition during a basketball game this morning, Chief Superintendent Chrislyn Skippings said.
Police said the victim did not complain about feeling ill before she collapsed.
“Obviously something went wrong and she collapsed,” Skippings said on the scene.
“…We are going to have an autopsy performed to find out what exactly went wrong and why she collapsed.”
Skippings said it was not immediately clear whether the victim had a medical condition.
The 18-year-old was a resident of Mason’s Addition. Bystanders were visibly shaken by her death.
Skippings said the matter has been classified as a sudden death for now.

Las Vegas student collapses in bathroom after PE Second student to die from cardiac event in one week
Another Las Vegas student died last week after collapsing and being found unresponsive in a school bathroom.
The senior high school student, Jordan Brister, attended Amplus Academy, a public charter school. Amplus Academy posted information on Brister’s death on the school’s Facebook page on Sunday.
“The Amplus community sends our love and condolences to the Brister family as well as to all of Jordan’s family, friends and acquaintances.”
The Clark County coroner’s office listed Brister’s date of death as Sunday, Jan. 8 at Southern Hills Hospital.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help the family pay for the teen’s funeral. It reads, “Jordan Tyler Brister suddenly and unexpectedly suffered cardiac arrest while at school with no explanation as to why. Jordan was a senior in high school who planned to join the military after graduating.”

Blaze Jacobs, 17, suffered a medical emergency on Monday morning while at school.
Western Brown High School Principal Heather Cooper issued a statement following the tragic incident to district families.
“Blaze Jacobs, a junior in our building, had cardiac arrest activity and was transported to Children’s Hospital this morning. We have received the information that Blaze has passed away,” Mrs. Cooper said in a statement.
“Again, we have started hearing questions and rumors in the building and wanted to make sure we were giving the most accurate and important information that we have, so our staff is communicating this with our students. Blaze was a very large part of our school community and one of WB’s biggest fans so we know this is going to be a struggle for everyone in our school family,” she continued.

Kindergarten Student in Ohio Dies Suddenly
January 11, 2023 Tragedy struck the community of Huron, Ohio Sunday when a young child died unexpectedly. Shawnee Elementary School announced the death of Evelyn Bauer, a kindergarten student attending the school.
In a release to the parents announces the horrible news, Huron Superintendent Dr. James Tatman expressed his condolences to the family. He also encouraged them “to be extra attentive to their child to pay attention to changes in attitude, sleep, eating, etc.”
Evelyn’s cause of death has not been released at this time.

Simon Dunn, Famed Australian Olympian and Rugby Player, Dies Suddenly at 35
Officials in Australia have confirmed that the nation’s first openly gay Olympic bobsledder, Simon Dunn, died suddenly at age 35.
Dunn’s body was reportedly found at his home in Sydney on Saturday. Police do not feel the death is suspicious and are going on the assumption that there is a medical reason for the passing, according to Yahoo Sports.
Ruby Rose Management confirmed the news with a statement saying, “About 10 am on Saturday, January 21, 2023, police were called to a unit on Crown Street, Surry Hills, after reports the body of a man had been found inside. The body is believed to be that of the 35-year-old occupant. Officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding his death, which is not being treated as suspicious.”
Dunn rose to fame in 2014 when he became the first openly gay member of the country’s Olympic bobsledding team. After retiring from the team in 2016, Dunn played for an all-gay rugby team, engaged in media appearances, and explored acting.
In 2021, Dunn attempted to make a bobsledding comeback by working to join the Australian team for the 2022 Winter Olympics. But his dream was dashed when he ruptured a bicep muscle during training.

18-Year-Old College Student Dies After Becoming 'Unresponsive' While Exercising on Campus
A college freshman collapsed and died yesterday while exercising on campus, according to a statement from his university.
Eighteen-year-old Steven Spellman “became unresponsive” during his workout on the campus of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, according to the statement.
Attempts to revive him at the scene were unsuccessful. He was transported to a local hospital “where he was pronounced dead.”

23-Year-Old University of Arizona Swimmer Ty Wells Dies ‘Suddenly’ The University of Arizona’s former swimming standout, who competed from 2018 to 22, died unexpectedly on Friday, according to Arizona Athletics.
Ty Wells died on Friday, January 27. He was 23.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of recent alum Ty Wells, who passed away on Friday,” Arizona Athletics announced on its social media Tuesday.
“Our heartfelt condolences are with his family, his friends and the entire Arizona Swimming & Diving family,” the post concluded.

Fully Vaccinated and Boosted 6-Year-Old Child Dies Suddenly
On January 25, at the age of 6, Anastasia Weaver passed away unexpectedly in the Emergency Room of Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman, Ohio, surrounded by her family.
Anastasia’s mother, Jessica Day-Weaver, said that her husband, Andrew Weaver, found Anastasia unresponsive around 6 a.m. on Wednesday when he got home.
Weaver said that after 15 minutes of being taken to Akron Children’s Hospital, Anastasia was pronounced dead.
No details have been released on the cause of death.

Detroit student on life support after collapsing during basketball game
DETROIT, Mich. — A Northwestern High School student is fighting for his life after collapsing during a basketball game.
Detroit Public Schools Community District officials confirmed the medical emergency happened Tuesday night at the school. Family members say 18-year-old Cartier Woods went into cardiac arrest during the game. The teen is now in the hospital on life support.
His aunt and legal guardian, Dwanda Woods, says the 18-year-old has been playing sports since he was 10 and has dreams of continuing to play in to college next year.
Woods says her nephew had no known heart conditions. She says paramedics delivered CPR for 40-60 minutes after he collapsed.

12-Year-Old New Jersey Boy Dies Suddenly During Football Practice
A family in Newark, New Jersey, is left with questions after their 12-year-old son collapsed and died suddenly during football practice at a local field.
The boy, Elijah Jordan Brown-Garcia, was reportedly performing drills along with his team, the Essex County Predators, at the West Side Park football field when he collapsed.
Team officials say that Brown-Garcia was not engaged in heavy activity at the time, according to News 12.
“No contact. It was just drills running back and forth. He didn’t get hit,” said his mother, Raven Brown. “He was a healthy kid…I don’t know why Friday night was his day.”
“He was so happy to be there. He didn’t know that it was going to be his last day,” Brown added.
Brown added that her ten-year-old son, who was also at the practice, called her and told her that Elijah had collapsed and they were “fanning” him and pouring water on him.
The bereaved mother also says that even though there were at least three calls for an ambulance, it took. more than 40 minutes for one to arrive. In fact, she told the media that she beat the ambulance to the field when she rushed there herself.
“I beat the ambulance there,” Brown insisted. “Like 30-40 minutes. It took them a long time.”
Brown is also wondering why no one involved with the team or the league is CPR certified. She added that the coach admitted that no one on site was able to help.

Forbes 30 Under 30 Honoree Dies After He Collapses During Arizona Marathon
Pierre Lipton, a 26-year-old athlete and businessman who was featured on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list, passed away after collapsing at the Mesa Marathon earlier this month.
Lipton, a Brown University graduate, was about to finish the marathon in 3 hours, 10 minutes, and 5 seconds, setting a personal best.
After crossing the finish line, he suddenly collapsed near the paramedics, Boston.com reported.
He was rushed to the hospital and was later pronounced dead.

The United Nations has proposed an “emergency option” to cool down the planet, which involves reflecting the sun’s rays away from the earth.
The UN has stated that current efforts to cool the planet are “insufficient” and that an emergency strategy is necessary to achieve their radical climate plans by the end of this century.
The insidious solution, called Solar Radiation Modification (SRM), employs untested geoengineering strategies to cool down the earth by reflecting sunlight back into space. According to the UN, SRM is “the only option that could cool the planet within years.”
The UN report stated that the strategy would need to be employed for several decades or even centuries to have a significant impact.
Their other ideas include cloud brightening and “space mirrors,” and it seems like the World Economic Forum's plans for "space bubbles" has inspired them.
To make matters worse, deploying this plan would cost upwards of $20 billion USD per year for every degree of cooling. I don't know what you think about this, but when I read the story, I could hardly believe it. Hopefully, nothing goes disastrously wrong. When has that ever happened?

Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to occupied areas of Ukraine this weekend, renewing conspiratorial claims that the Russian leader may use a team of body doubles for public appearances, with critics pointing to one body part in particular, his ears.
Petro Andryushchenko, an advisor to the mayor of Mariupol, a besieged Ukrainian city that Putin visited, wrote on Telegram that "Putin or one of his doubles" had paid an overnight visit to the occupied region, according to the Local Today, which republished an article originally written by The Washington Post.
The original article has been updated to remove references to Putin using a body double. The Washington Post did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment about why the article was updated. However, The Post isn't the first publication to reference the possibility of a Putin body double.
While the conspiracy may sound wild, there are elements of truth to it; political decoys are sometimes used on the international stage — and people can be identified by certain measurements of their ears.
The Putin body-double theory Major General Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine's head of military intelligence, told the Daily Mail in an interview that the Russian leader uses a team of doubles to cover up Putin's loss of control in the Kremlin. The doubles, Budanov said, used to be detected standing in for Putin only on "special occasions" but since the invasion of Ukraine have been observed as a "usual practice."
"We know specifically about three people that keep appearing, but how many there are, we don't know," Budanov told the outlet in October. "They all had plastic surgery to look alike."
He added: "The one thing that gives them away is their height. It's visible in videos and pictures. Also gesturing, body language, and earlobes, since they are unique for every person."
The British news site The Week reports that Putin is an estimated 5 feet 7 inches tall.
Newsweek reported Budanov repeated the claim during an August appearance on the Ukrainian television channel Groshi, saying that "each person's ear picture is unique. It cannot be repeated" — though he has not offered concrete evidence to back up the claim that Putin uses a body double.
Ears as evidence While Budanov's claims about Putin's health or use of body doubles cannot be verified, the use of ears as forensic evidence has been documented for decades. Since the 1950s, the measurements of ears have been used by forensic scientists to identify suspects of crime and, in the era of the algorithm, Wired reported ears identified by software could be a more unique identifier than fingerprints.
The International Business Times in 2018 called the idea of Putin using body doubles "one of the more unusual conspiracy theories," after online posters shared a viral series of photos on social media, once again focused on Putin's ears and analyzing them for possible clues — though skeptics remain unconvinced.
Users on Twitter speculated that a Putin body double went to Ukraine, focusing on the specific curves of his ear, comparing the sagging of his earlobes to photos from 2006 and 2018.
"As you grow older your ear doesn't change – it just grows larger but the proportions remain the same," Mark Nixon, a computer vision expert at the University of Southampton and a leading researcher in ear recognition, told the BBC.
Advances in 3D-scanning technology make it possible to identify someone, even from a fuzzy picture, by the measurements of the distance from the lobe to two points on the upper edge of their ear, with 99.6% accuracy in just 0.02 milliseconds, BBC reported in 2017.
Use of political decoys Though claims that Putin uses a body double have increased since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began last February, they're not new, nor are they limited to the Russian leader.
Last month, Newsweek reported on rumors that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy used a double himself while meeting with United States President Joe Biden during Biden's visit to Ukraine. Biden has also been accused by conspiracy theorists of using a body double when he received the COVID-19 vaccination, according to PolitiFact.
International political figures — including Saddam Hussein, Adolf Hitler, Queen Elizabeth, and Melania Trump — have also been said to have used decoys during their time in leadership, the Indian news outlet Wio News reported.
Footage filmed in 2017 of North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un appeared to show the dictator talking with two identically-dressed doppelgangers, The New York Post reported, which escalated existing rumors that he was dying or already dead.
Budanov said that he believes Putin is seriously ill — another theory that has long circulated among critics of the Russian leader, who think he may suffer from ailments ranging from cancer to a nebulous, unnamed, "very bad psychological and physical condition," as Budanov told Sky News last May.
Theories of political figures using body doubles often appear to correlate with rumors of their illness or other weakness which would prevent them from otherwise fulfilling their leadership duties.
While some instances of political decoys have been confirmed — a political aide to Henry Kissinger said he used an impersonator during a secret trip to China in 1971, according to CNN — it remains unclear whether Putin has ever used one.
Speculation on the matter, however, is apparently irresistible.
