Puerto Rico’s Leading Newspaper Just Backed Biden in Historic Endorsement.
Puerto Rico’s leading newspaper, El Nuevo Día, has endorsed Joe Biden in what his campaign says is the first presidential endorsement in the paper’s 50-year history.
In an editorial published on Sunday, El Nuevo Día concluded that the Trump administration “has shown an overwhelming amount of inattention, disdain and prejudice against our people.” Along with President Donald Trump’s infamous paper towel throwing, it mentions the president asking about whether the United States could trade Puerto Rico for Greenland. More broadly, the editorial catalogues his disastrous response to Hurricane Maria. (For more on this front, be sure to read Mother Jones reporter AJ Vicens.)
After Cuban Americans, Puerto Ricans are the second largest group of Latino voters in Florida, where polls show Biden only slightly ahead of Trump. Compared to Cubans, Puerto Ricans are much more likely to support Biden, but they’ve tended to vote at lower rates. Biden traveled to the Orlando area last month to make his pitch to Puerto Rican voters.
In contrast to Trump’s actions, El Nuevo Día wrote that Biden has promised to create a Puerto Rico working group that would report directly to the president, expand Puerto Ricans’ access to Medicaid and food assistance, and increase federal funding for education on the island.
The editorial concludes by stating that endorsing Biden puts El Nuevo Día on the side of “our most democratic values” and in opposition to the “politics of hate, division and chaos that President Trump and a significant part of the Republican Party have supported.”
“The world is a much more dangerous and unsustainable place, in large measure, because of this President’s domestic and international policies,” the editorial argues. “The votes from our extended homeland in favor of Biden’s Plan for Puerto Rico will make our island and the world safer and more prosperous places for everyone.”

| Subject: 20 former U.S. Attorneys Backing Biden. Tue Oct 27, 2020 5:12 pm | |

20 former U.S. Attorneys—all Republicans—join stampede of former GOP officials backing Biden.
Twenty former U.S. attorneys threw their support behind Joe Biden Tuesday, calling Donald Trump “a threat to the rule of law in our country."
The former prosecutors, appointed by Republican presidents ranging from Dwight Eisenhower to George W. Bush, said they were called upon to perform their duties by enforcing the law both "effectively and impartially." Trump, they said, had departed from that mandate in troubling ways.
"The President has clearly conveyed that he expects his Justice Department appointees and prosecutors to serve his personal and political interests in the handling of certain cases – such as the investigations into foreign election interference and the prosecution of his political associates – and has taken action against those who have stood up for the interests of justice," they wrote.
They said Trump's demands had "politicized" the department and undermined its ability to lead the nation’s law enforcement by "picking political fights with state and local officials" in order to blame them for recent clashes in certain cities.
"For these reasons," they wrote, "we believe that President Trump’s leadership is a threat to the rule of law in our country, and we do not support his reelection.”
Trump's wretched presidency has elicited an outpouring of similar declarations of support for Biden from former GOP officials. In August, dozens of Republican foreign policy experts also formally backed Biden in a full-page ad.
In fact, one by one, high-profile Republicans have also been defecting. Those pledging to vote for Biden include former RNC Chair Michael Steele, former Sec. of State under George W. Bush Colin Powell, former Ohio governor John Kasich, former Michigan governor Rick Snyder, former Pennsylvania governor and Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge, former GOP Sen. Jeff Flake, and Cindy McCain, just to name a few. |

| Biden backer: Candidate's late large donor reveal 'defeats the entire purpose of transparency' Tim O'Donnell, The Week • November 1, 2020
Former Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential nominee, disclosed his campaign's top donors Saturday evening, but the announcement didn't satisfy everyone, even among his supporters.
This is the first time Biden made the list public since he won the Democratic nomination. Biden, who has reeled in $383 million throughout his run, named 817 "bundlers" who raised at least $100,000 for the candidate through their personal networks, often giving their own maximum donation, as well. Per Politico, the list contains several top Democratic politicians and officials, Wall Street executives, Silicon Valley tycoons, and Hollywood celebrities.
Vox notes campaign-finance reform advocates had grown concerned that Biden had kept the information under wraps up to this point, especially since 90 million people have already voted. Previously, Democratic candidates have regularly disclosed their bundlers in the name of transparency. "Congratulations on clearing an artificially low bar they set for themselves that defeats the entire purpose of transparency — allowing voters to know who is funding the campaigns asking for their support before casting their ballots," said Tyson Brody, a Democratic operative who worked for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Brody is backing Biden in the election, per Vox, but is critical of the influence large campaign donors can have on elections.
While the campaign's decision to release names late in the game means many voters submitted their ballots with incomplete information, Vox notes that it isn't surprising. One of Biden's central messages is his ability to relate to the working and middle classes, which led to a focus on small, grassroots donations. Big name contributors, on the other hand, could have undercut the campaign's strategy. Read more at Vox and Politico. |
