Biden to start considering running mates, consulted Obama Reuters By Trevor Hunnicutt • March 22, 2020
(Reuters) - Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden said on Sunday he needed to start vetting possible running mates "in a matter of weeks" and that he discussed the pick with former President Barack Obama.
Biden's vice presidential options will include at least six or seven women who will be subjected to background checks to ensure there will not "be any snafu," he told donors at a fundraising event held by telephone.
"I have to start that vetting process relatively soon, meaning in a matter of weeks," he said. "I think there will be a group that is in excess of six or seven people who I'll look at."
Biden said at a Democratic debate last week that he would pick a woman for the job, a qualification he reiterated on Sunday.
Biden also emphasized that the woman would have to agree with his fundamental view on policies, including healthcare, education and the need for expansive U.S. influence in the world. He said he shared that kind of common ground with Obama - whom he served as vice president - although they sometimes differed on tactics.
Above all, the person would need to be qualified to serve as president immediately.
"I've actually talked to Barack about this - the most important thing is that it has to be someone who, the day after they're picked, is prepared to be president of the United States of America if something happened," said Biden, 77.
Biden holds a strong lead over Senator Bernie Sanders, his lone remaining rival for the party's nomination to face Republican President Donald Trump in November's election.
Sidelined from campaigning in public because of the coronavirus crisis that has put nearly one in three Americans under orders to stay at home, Biden said he would start broadcasting on Monday morning from his home in Delaware.
Those briefings will give Biden a way to offer an alternative to the daily news conferences on the coronavirus held by Trump, whose disaster response Biden has criticized.
Biden added that the election should move forward as scheduled amid concerns the coronavirus may not be fully contained by November. A number of states have already pushed back presidential nominating contests because of the outbreak.
"I know there's a lot of rumors and speculation as to, is the other guy going to try to postpone the election in November and all that. There's no need to do that," Biden said. "You know, we voted in the middle of the Civil War, we voted in the middle of World War One and Two.
"The idea of postponing the electoral process seems to me out of the question."

Joe Biden’s Sexual Assault Accuser Breaks Silence With Graphic Allegations She details an assault she says occurred in 1993. Written By Royce Dunmore Posted 10 hours ago
In April of last year, Tara Reade accused Joe Biden of inappropriate behavior when she worked at his Senate office in 1993. Now, she’s accusing the Democratic presidential nominee of sexual assault, according to a graphic interview with podcaster Katie Halper.
When Reade initially came out about her experience with Biden, she told The Union that he did uncomfortable things like “put his hand on my shoulder and run his finger up my neck.” Reade also said that she cut ties with Biden’s office over an early 1993 staff argument. According to Reade, Biden wanted her to serve drinks because he liked her legs. Reade says she didn’t hear this directly from Biden but she learned of it during her argument with staff. Reade refused to serve the drinks, which she believes was a move that affected her career.
“My life was hell,” Reade said. “This was about power and control. I couldn’t get a job on the Hill.” She eventually left Biden’s office in August of 1993.

Tara Reade is a former Biden staffer who has come forward to accuse the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee of sexual assault. It's a story, like many of these stories, that's been floating around a while as the victim dithered about going public. But three days ago, a story appeared on the far-left Intercept website, detailing her allegation and the resistance it was generating.

Published 2 hours ago Biden offers to call Trump at White House to discuss coronavirus response strategy By Brooke Singman | Fox News
Former Vice President Joe Biden is offering to call President Trump to discuss a strategy to combat the coronavirus pandemic rocking the nation, Fox News has learned.
Biden’s offer comes after Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, challenged him to “call the White House today and offer some support.”
The White House did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment on whether the president would be receptive to Biden's offer for a phone call, or when the proposed phone call between the two could take place.
Biden has been offering advice and warnings to Trump about the coronavirus in media interviews and appearances for months. Wednesday, however, is the first time the former vice president is offering to speak with the president directly.
"Vice President Biden has been extending his advice for months, and he did so again on the air last night," Biden's deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield told Fox News. "As he has said repeatedly, Donald Trump is not accountable for coronavirus itself — but he is accountable for the federal government's slow and chaotic response to this outbreak."
"Unfortunately, Trump spent months after the virus was discovered disregarding repeated warnings from his scientific and intelligence experts, and downplaying the threat of this outbreak to the American people," she continued. "He could have heeded Vice President Biden's public advice not to take China's word as they misled the world about their efforts to stop the spread."
Bedingfield added: "The Obama-Biden administration even wrote a literal playbook for pandemic response, but unfortunately Trump's administration left it on the shelf. Now we have more coronavirus cases than any other country."
Biden will likely be the Democratic nominee, after reclaiming his front-runner status on Super Tuesday and notching victories in subsequent primary contests to build a huge delegate lead over rival Bernie Sanders.
Biden, during the coronavirus outbreak, has been hosting virtual press conferences and has often criticized the president’s response to the outbreak.
Conway, during an interview Wednesday morning with “Fox & Friends” criticized Biden, instead, for not directly offering his support to Trump.
“I think it’s really disappointing to have President Obama’s number two, who apparently doesn’t talk much to him, out there, criticizing, instead of saying 'hey, here is what we did that we thought was effective,'” Conway explained.
“Why doesn’t Vice President Biden call the White House today and offer some support?” Conway asked, noting that Biden is “in his bunker” in Wilmington, Del.
Conway went on to maintain that the White House is not focused on political rhetoric, but instead a response to curb the outbreak of COVID-19.
“I have to tell you, we’re not talking about politics here at the White House at all,” she explained. We’re talking about ventilators and vaccines, not Biden and Bernie. There’s really no time for that, but it’s very disappointing when you see the criticism.”
She added: “I think the critics and the naysayers seem so much more small and so much more shrill and unhelpful and petty than they ever have.”
Later, Conway told reporters that she has "yet to hear a single idea from Vice President Biden that would be helpful to the American people or that is different from what we are doing.”
As of midday Wednesday, the U.S. reported 190,740 positive cases of COVID-19 and more than 4,100 deaths.
The White House coronavirus task force, meanwhile, has pleaded with Americans to abide by the administration’s extended social distancing guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19.
During Tuesday's briefing, the president himself told Americans to brace for “a very painful two weeks and warned of thousands more virus-related deaths.
“The surge is coming, and it’s coming pretty strong,” Trump said Tuesday night, in a change of tone from previous press briefings.
“This is going to be a rough two-week period,” Trump said. “As a nation, we’re going to have a really rough two weeks. Our strength will be tested and our endurance will be tried.”
At another point, Trump said: "This could be a hell of a bad two weeks. This is going to be a very bad two or maybe even three weeks. This is going to be three weeks like we've never seen before."
The extension of the social distancing guidelines comes after Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and other public health officials ominously warned that even if the U.S. were to continue to do what it was doing -- keeping the economy closed and most Americans in their homes -- the coronavirus could still leave 100,000 to 240,000 people in the United States dead and millions infected.
Without any measures in place to mitigate the contagion's spread, those projections jump to between 1.5 and 2.2 million deaths from COVID-19.
“It is absolutely critical for the American people to follow the guidelines,” Trump said during the briefing. “It’s a matter of life and death.”
The new “30 Days to Slow the Spread” guidelines -- unveiled at the press conference -- are an extension of the strategy the White House implemented just over two weeks ago and include guidance on social distancing, working from home, washing hands frequently, and avoiding any unnecessary travel.

Biden donors privately float big names, including Elizabeth Warren and Larry Fink, for key roles PUBLISHED MON, APR 6 20205:59 PM EDT, UPDATED MON, APR 6 20207:45 PM EDT Brian Schwartz | CNBC
Joe Biden’s top donors are privately discussing some big names who could serve as policy advisors in his campaign or the White House if he can defeat President Donald Trump.
Biden told donors on Friday he is asking advisors who would be best to follow him into government if he were elected president.
“Who would I ask to be secretary of State? Who would I ask to be the attorney general? Who would I ask to be White House counsel? Who would I ask to be the chief of staff?” Biden said.
Joe Biden has said that he’s started discussing with his advisors who he would ask to join his administration if he goes on to defeat President Donald Trump in November.
His donors, on the other hand, have been privately floating some names that they hope to see become advisors for the campaign or even join a Biden White House, particularly as the coronavirus rattles the economy, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter. The people declined to be named because discussions were in private.
According to the people, the names being discussed by donors and supporters alike include Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.; BlackRock CEO Laurence Fink; Blackstone Executive Vice Chairman Tony James; Mark Gallogly, the co-founder of investment firm Centerbridge Partners; and Roger Altman, the founder of Evercore, among others.
Gallogly and Altman have helped Biden raise campaign cash throughout the 2020 election cycle, while James backed former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg when he was in the race for president.
If Biden doesn’t choose Harris as his running mate, some privately said that she should be attorney general. Warren could be a key campaign economic advisor, others said. Fink would be a great pick for Treasury secretary, while Gallogly and James could be strong players in that department as well, these people noted.
Robert Wolf, a longtime Democratic donor and confidant of President Barack Obama, told CNBC that although he’s not aware of the discussions taking place about Fink, he believes he would be a great pick for the job.
“There would be many great choices, but certainly Larry would be one of the top choices for anyone’s list,” he said.
The deliberations about who could join forces with Biden come as the coronavirus pandemic spreads across the country and lays siege to the economy. Democrats are hoping that, if Biden can defeat Trump, his administration will have the people in place that could help get the economy back on track. Almost 10 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits in just two weeks in late March, and markets have been in flux.
The former vice president is ahead in the delegate count but is still in a primary fight against Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Though donors are not official members of the campaign, they often have a direct line to candidates themselves and could be key influences when Biden moves ahead with choosing who to bring on as advisors.
The Biden campaign and all the business leaders mentioned in this story did not respond to requests for comment. Representatives for Harris and Warren did not respond to requests for comment.
Biden told his fundraisers during his virtual event on Friday that, while he has not started to interview or vet members of a possible future administration, he’s inquiring among advisors about whether some people would follow him into a government role if he were to become president. Biden’s campaign has gone fully virtual in the wake of COVID-19 and has been pushing for Trump to act faster when it comes to his response to the pandemic.
“There are a number of people like you, and I’m not being a wise guy, who have been helping me, they’re serious people who I’ve had discussions with about whether or not — not a cabinet position, because there’s nothing quid pro quo — but asking them are they willing to come into a government if I get elected,” Biden told his donors last week, according to a transcript of the meeting provided by the pool reporter.
“I haven’t asked anybody — no discussion yet — but who would I ask to be secretary of State? Who would I ask to be the attorney general? Who would I ask to be White House counsel? Who would I ask to be the chief of staff?” Biden continued.
Some of Biden’s business allies have started pushing for Harris to be his pick for vice president. Yet if she doesn’t become his running mate, they are looking to approach the campaign about her being picked for attorney general, noting her experience in the same role for California, the country’s most populous state.
Many of the top financiers for Biden and the Democratic Party are starting to warm up to Warren potentially becoming an economic advisor for the campaign. Most of these big-money donors saw her as their arch nemesis when she was running for president. At the time, she was pitching raising taxes on wealthy Americans and historically has been a staunch critic of the U.S. banking system. While she was rising in the primary polls, donors told CNBC that they were warning party leaders that if she became the nominee they would back Trump instead.
Still, these people say that with the bipartisan effort in Congress to protect small businesses, through a $2 trillion stimulus package, Warren’s economic policy proposals may now have an even broader appeal to a larger swath of the electorate. Biden has already endorsed Warren’s bankruptcy plan that would allow those with student debt to get some relief through bankruptcy.
Warren, in a recent interview with Vox, touted her belief that the federal government must lead the way in giving financial aid to those suffering economic hardships from the coronavirus.
“Only the federal government can cushion the economic blow here in a meaningful way,” Warren said. “It is only the federal government that can actually print money in a time of crisis. Only the federal government that can deficit spend,” she added.
Though she has not officially endorsed Biden, she came very close to backing his campaign in an interview on SiriusXM when she was asked about having any interest in a future Democratic cabinet position.
“I think we’ve got someone like Joe Biden in there, we’re going to have good, strong people. For me, and I appreciate the kind and generous words, but right now, and we are in the middle of this crisis and that’s where I’m keeping my focus,” she said.
Fink, who reportedly told Biden “I’m here to help” before he officially announced his run for president in April 2019, is being touted among financiers and among the vice president’s allies as someone who could be a solid pick to lead the Treasury Department. Fink supported Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election and many were pushing him to be her choice for that position before she fell to Trump.
In 2012, as Tim Geithner was wrapping up his term as the head of Treasury under Obama and heading to the private sector, Fink kept the door open to taking the position. Fink said at the time that he would “certainly take the call, and I would be a good listener” but noted he was happy at BlackRock.

Last Update 11 mins ago New York Times edits Biden sexual assault coverage, deletes references to past inappropriate 'hugs, kisses and touching' By Gregg Re | Fox News
The New York Times stealth-edited its article on the sexual-assault allegation against Joe Biden by his former Senate staffer Tara Reade just minutes after it was published on Sunday morning, removing all references in a key paragraph to the multiple past accusations by seven women that the former vice president had touched them inappropriately.
The Times piece also focuses on unrelated sexual misconduct accusations against President Trump, and largely dismisses Reade's allegations as uncorroborated by her co-workers -- even though the Times notes later in its piece that Reade's claim was contemporaneously corroborated by two of Reade's friends.
According to a copy of the Times' article saved by the Internet archive Wayback Machine, the Times originally reported: "No other allegation about sexual assault surfaced in the course of reporting, nor did any former Biden staff members corroborate any details of Ms. Reade’s allegation. The Times found no pattern of sexual misconduct by Mr. Biden, beyond the hugs, kisses and touching that women previously said made them uncomfortable."
That paragraph now reads: "No other allegation about sexual assault surfaced in the course of reporting, nor did any former Biden staff members corroborate any details of Ms. Reade’s allegation. The Times found no pattern of sexual misconduct by Mr. Biden."

Elizabeth Warren endorses Joe Biden for president By MJ Lee and Kate Sullivan, CNN
Updated 10:40 AM ET, Wed April 15, 2020
(CNN)Sen. Elizabeth Warren officially endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden Wednesday morning.
The former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate tweeted out her endorsement with a video message, noting the empathy Biden extends to struggling Americans.
"Empathy matters. And, in this moment of crisis, it's more important than ever that the next president restores Americans' faith in good, effective government," Warren says. "Joe Biden has spent nearly his entire life in public service. He knows that a government run with integrity, competence, and heart will save lives and save livelihoods. And we can't afford to let Donald Trump continue to endanger the lives and livelihoods of every American."
"That's why I'm proud to endorse Joe Biden as president of the United States," she added.
Elizabeth Warren
@ewarren In this moment of crisis, it’s more important than ever that the next president restores Americans’ faith in good, effective government—and I’ve seen Joe Biden help our nation rebuild. Today, I’m proud to endorse @JoeBiden as President of the United States.
7:00 AM - Apr 15, 2020
Biden touted Warren's endorsement on Twitter, writing, "We are in a battle for the soul of this nation and I'm proud to have the fiercest of fighters, Senator @ewarren, on my side. With her help, we're going to beat Donald Trump and create a government that works for everyone — not just the wealthy and well-connected. Let's do this."
Warren is the last of Biden's top former rivals to throw their support behind the former vice president. The endorsement comes as the Democratic Party attempts to unify and turn its focus to a general election campaign against President Donald Trump. Former President Barack Obama endorsed his former running mate on Tuesday.
Warren's endorsement comes two days after Sen. Bernie Sanders officially got behind Biden's campaign, with the Vermont senator calling on his allies to now support the presumptive Democratic nominee.
When Warren ended her campaign last month, there was intense speculation about whether she would get behind either Biden or Sanders.
But as time passed and Biden continued to grow his delegate lead, when asked about a potential endorsement, Warren publicly said that she was focused on the coronavirus pandemic and also that she wanted to give Sanders "space to decide what he wants to do next."
Warren, a leader in the progressive movement, was at one point considered a top contender for the Democratic nomination. The Massachusetts senator centered her presidential bid on fighting corruption in Washington, and released more than 70 comprehensive policy plans that addressed a wide range of issues. But after disappointing finishes in primary contests across the country on Super Tuesday and failing to build a broader political coalition in a Democratic Party, Warren ended her presidential campaign in March.
Warren, who is more aligned with Sanders on policy positions and ideology, was fiercely critical of the former vice president in the primary campaign. The same night former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke endorsed Biden, Warren said at a rally in Los Angeles that "no matter how many Washington insiders tell you to support (Biden), nominating their fellow Washington insider will not meet this moment." Biden had previously accused Warren on a radio show of having an "elitist attitude," and told donors that her campaign was based on a "my-way-or-the-highway attitude."
But in an attempt to win over progressive voters, Biden has been taking steps to embrace his former rivals, including Warren, and adopt parts of their platforms. Biden in March backed Warren's bankruptcy proposal to repeal portions of a law Biden and Warren had clashed over 15 years earlier. Biden and Warren in 2005 had a high-profile battle over a bill that made it more difficult to declare bankruptcy, when Biden was a Delaware senator and leading advocate of the measure and Warren was a Harvard professor and vocal opponent. Warren is an expert on bankruptcy law and was an adviser to the National Bankruptcy Review Commission in the 1990s.
Warren alluded to their past disagreement over bankruptcy in her endorsement video, saying, "Joe Biden was there at the very moment I became a senator -- he swore me in. And when he did, he said 'you gave me hell! And you're gonna do a great job.'"
"Because that's the thing about Joe: He wants you in the fight with him. And when you're in the fight with Joe at your side, you know you have a partner who's committed to getting something good done for this country," she said.

BREAKING: Joe Biden Is Officially Under Investigation April 22, 2020
Former Vice President and Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden is officially under investigation by Washington D.C. law enforcement for his alleged sexual assault against Tara Reade, a former staffer of his campaign in 1993. Tara Reade went forward with a criminal complaint to the police earlier this month, after revealing the disturbing details of the alleged assault on a podcast with journalist Katie Harper.
Law enforcement confirmed that there is an active investigation into the alleged sexual assault by Joe Biden in a statement to reporters on Tuesday.
Check out what the Washington Examiner reported below:
The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia is actively investigating the complaint against Joe Biden brought by Tara Reade, the woman who accused Biden of sexually assaulting her in 1993, despite her allegation being impossible to prosecute since it is past the statute of limitations.
“This is an active, ongoing investigation, and there are no further details to provide at this time,” a Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson told the Washington Examiner Tuesday regarding Reade’s case. “Cases that are handled by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit go through a multi-review prior to being assigned a disposition. This case is progressing through the review process.”
The investigation remaining open, despite the alleged incident occurring past the statute of limitations, struck multiple experts as highly unusual.
Tara Reade alleges that, while she was working on Joe Biden’s campaign as a staff assistant, she was asked by her supervisor to bring a bag up to the Delaware Senator, and Joe Biden proceeded to push her against the wall and sexually assault her.
“She said he was down towards the Capitol, and he’ll meet you,” Reade said. “I went down, and I was heading down towards there. He was at first talking to someone…and then they went away. We were in, like, the side, like the side area, and he just said, ‘Hey, come here Tara.’”
“I handed him the thing. He greeted me. He remembered my name. And then we were alone,” she continued. “It was the strangest thing. There was no like exchange really. He just had me up against the wall. I was wearing, like, a skirt, a business skirt.”
“It happened all at once…his hands were on me and underneath my clothes. Yeah, and he went down my skirt but then up inside it, and he penetrated me with his fingers, and he was kissing me at the same time, and he was saying something to me. He said several things. I can’t remember everything he said,” she added.

Last Update 1 hour ago CNN slammed for treatment of Biden sexual assault allegations after old Larry King clip surfaces By Brian Flood | Fox News
Mother of Biden accuser reportedly phoned into Larry King's show to complain about 'prominent senator'
Newly-resurfaced video from decades ago lends support to allegations against Joe Biden; insight from journalist Rich McHugh.
CNN, which has already drawn fire for its reluctance to cover a claim of sexual assault against Joe Biden, failed to uncover its own archive footage in which his accuser's mother called into Larry King's old show in what some critics are calling "journalistic misconduct".
The Intercept reported earlier that Tara Reade said her late mother once called into CNN’s “Larry King Live” to discuss her daughter’s “experience on Capitol Hill,” where the alleged encounter with Biden took place. Reade didn’t recall other information, such as the date or even year and The Intercept managed to dig up a transcript of the call, but not the video.
Tucked away among hundreds of thousands of hours of old archive footage was the long-forgotten clip which came to light Friday.
But rather than CNN's team of investigative reporters, it was the Media Research Center’s NewsBusters, a conservative group that seeks to expose liberal bias, who exhumed the footage from its own vault.
“It's truly despicable that this footage existed and yet CNN failed to do its own due diligence within its own archives,” NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck told Fox News.
CNN didn’t even mention the tape’s newfound attention during its Friday night primetime lineup. CNN’s “Reliable Sources” newsletter didn’t think it was worth including, either.
CNN has largely ignored Reade’s claims, drawing criticism from media watchdogs that often contrast it with how the liberal network handled allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh with hundreds of stories and countless segments. CNN finally published its first story on Reade’s claims on April 17, weeks after they were made, when correspondent MJ Lee framed the story as Democratic leaders and allies of Biden being “asked to respond to an allegation” against the 2020 Democratic frontrunner.
“Perhaps they thought doing the bare minimum with help from the horribly biased MJ Lee would have done the trick and made the concerns about their on-air silence go away,” Houck said. “Now they've poured gasoline on the fire. Once again, we see a case of how the worst kind of media bias is the bias that you don't see, or bias by omission.”
The resurfaced CNN clip from 1993 appeared to show Reade’s mother alluding to “problems” her daughter faced while working as a staffer for the then-Delaware senator. Reade later told Fox News it was indeed the voice of her mother on the clip. Biden's presidential campaign has adamantly denied Reade's allegations but the video could be cited as evidence supporting Reade’s allegation – even though her late mother, in the clip, does not specifically refer to a sexual assault claim.
CNN did not immediately respond to a series of questions, including whether the network knew the footage existed.
“Larry King may have had the biggest scoop of his CNN career this evening ... And it’s an open question whether his former employer will say a word about it,” New York Post reporter Jon Levine tweeted.
Houck credited The Intercept’s report and the MRC’s “truly exemplary TV news archive” for being able to locate the clip so quickly.
“While unsurprising given how fundamentally unserious of a network CNN has become, it's gratifying for the MRC but shameful for CNN that they hadn't unearthed this long ago,” Houck said.
DePauw University professor and media critic Jeffrey McCall told Fox News that The Intercept reporter Ryan Grim “used to work for the Huffington Post, so he is presumably not some sort of Republican or conservative operative pushing a smear on Biden,” but he blasted CNN for its clear bias.
“That CNN couldn't pull this clip out of their own archives, even after Reade mentioned it in a recent interview, seems to demonstrate that CNN just lacks hustle to investigate this story or just wants to keep the story buried,” McCall said. “Either way, this comes off as journalistic misconduct.”
Biden has made multiple appearances on CNN since Reade came forward, but anchors Anderson Cooper, Brooke Baldwin and Jake Tapper have all ignored Reade’s during separate interviews.
McCall said that CNN is not alone as many other mainstream media outlets have been hesitant to pursue Reade’s allegations against Biden. For nearly three weeks, the mainstream media largely avoided Reade's allegation. The tides began to shift following Rich McHugh's report in Business Insider the Friday before Easter that Reade had filed a criminal complaint against Biden.
“Biden is presumed to be the Democrat nominee for president and that makes this matter newsworthy enough to be investigated, with of course all precautions for fairness and accuracy,” McCall said. “The discovery of this video clip does provide some extra evidence in the matter and it should be reported with proper context and scrutiny. But it shouldn't be summarily dismissed as irrelevant, particularly in this era.”
